    1. Manny’s words ring through his head: This Captain Save-A-Hothing is gonna get you in trouble, dawg.He looks Melo over. She’s now sitting with her head leaned backagainst the car door, half-asleep, mouth open.He sighs. Even drunk, Jus can’t deny Melo’s the finest girl he’s everlaid eyes—not to mention hands—on

This quote is significant to “ Martin “ or Justyce upbringing because he is a talented individual who is in love with a leach. He is in love with something toxic and Manny is trying to bring awareness to this issue by repeating the cycle of unstable relationship/friendship dynamics as they can be the downfall.

    2. Justyce fights the urge to look at his arms. It’s hard to see the bruisesbecause his skin is such a deep brown, but even after a week, they’restill there.Sometimes he thinks they’ll never fade.“Yeah, they’re all right. Mel gave me this weird ointment fromNorway. Smells like Altoid-covered feet, but it’s doing the trick.”Manny’s quarterback throws a deep pass, but it’s short. Justyce’s freesafety intercepts. “We got back together last night.”Manny presses Pause. Turns to his boy.“Dawg, you are not serious right now.”

The fact that Justyce is still interactive with someone who put him through this much and jeopardized his scholarship I would've reacted the same as Manny. You can bring them to the ight but you can't make them drink it is a sang i go by because I refuse to continue feeding into nonsense like this, throughout highschool we all learn that being too down for the cause is a bad thing and will reverse back to you. I hope it doesn't reverse back to Justyce.

    3. So many guns. Just like the one Castillo kept his hand on whiletreating Jus like a criminal. One wrong move, and Jus might’ve beenthe next Shemar Carson. He shudders. “Hey, you mind if we play something a little less...violent?”Manny pauses the game. Turns to his best friend

He is nearly traumatized by his experienced with the police officer

    4. All I can think now is “How different would things have gonehad I not been a black guy?” I know initially the cop could only goby what he saw (which prolly did seem a little sketchy), but I’venever had my character challenged like that before.Last night changed me. I don’t wanna walk around all pissedoff and looking for problems, but I know I can’t continue to

Justyce accusations portray him as a monster in society when the monster is the system. He was out all night because of simply trying to help his drunk ex before she harmed herself . She should have spoken up because she had the privilege within the situation. His identity was challenged and it contributes to one of the many social justice issues that occur in modern society. This quote is significant because it symbolizes how the system wants black men to fail , to be silent, something in which Justyce is not going to do.

    5. Melo responds in her usual delicate fashion: she screams and beatshim on the back with her fists.Justyce struggles to get the back door open and is lowering her intothe car when he hears the WHOOOOP of a short siren and sees theblue lights. In the few seconds it takes the police car to screech to astop behind him, Justyce settles Melo into the backseat. Now she’s gone catatonic.Justyce can hear the approaching footsteps, but he stays focused ongetting Melo strapped in

It is ironic how Melo who is later identified as white , has nothing to say and blames unresponsive or catatonic when the police arrive. This is a prime example of the unresolved social juices issues we face in our society , pointing the finger at the wrong hand. The officer placed Justyce under the same stereotype as every other black male in the world , always assuming they have bad intentions.

Keep in mind that if you use at least three pieces of evidence, you are able to establish a pattern of thought. Analysis is the most challenging aspect of composing your body paragraphs since you are sharing with your audience the connection between and relevance of your ideas and opinions; this takes time, space, and work. So do not rush this process, and enjoy exploring and sharing your thoughts with your audience

this is important because the standards change as we grow into new environments , in highschool it is usually full of evidence with minimal opportunities

    6. Evidence informs your audience about the topic you frame with the topic sentence, consider using different forms of evidence to inform your audience about the topic, by using

evidence furthermore gives the reader information that supports your main theme / ideas.

I don't know what she means completely , but this stood out to me and was very powerful because when I think of god I think of how no one should be able to over power you or pick you apart but him.

    2. So unless you’ve seen it rob a bank stop calling my hair badI’m so sick of this nonsensical racial disparitySo don’t call it good unless your hair is knownfor donating to charity

Describing all societies standards and stereotypes just shows that we're just different and its something that has not been accepted. Hair texture, skin tones all factors that are always judged within society.

    3. “Yo! Why dese books neva be about my peoples”Yes, I have decided to treatall three of my languages as equalsBecause I’m “articulate”But who controls articulation?

    6. indefinite transformationNow you may think that it is ignorant to speak broken EnglishBut I’m here to tell you that even “articulate” Americanssound foolish to the British

This is so important and true, we should not let others dictate how we speak and write our English because it is all broken. British can represent standard English but it does not represent all versions of speech.

this should be enforced more in society specifically the government as they never consider the effect of those who are not rich and on the higher scale economically.

    4. ealistic workplans; leadership which understands that things take longer than anyone expects; discuss and plan for what it means to set goals of inclusivity and diversity, particularly in terms of time; learn from past experience how long things take; write realistic funding proposals with realistic time frames;

This is a helpful tip I will use because actively planning and being on top of things is so much more reliving and satisfying.

    5. mistakes are seen as personal, i.e. they reflect badly on the person making them as opposed to being seen for what they are –mistakes

It almost creates a fear to make mistakes when you want everything to be perfect, and all that is said is the honest truth about being a perfectionist because nothing can satisfy that want and the imperfections.

    1. Code switching, from a linguistic perspective,

Code switching is combining two or more languages together , it is not separating the two languages.

    2. nlarge our perspective about what good writin is and how good writin can look at work, at home, and at school. The narrow, prescriptive lens be messin writers and readers all the way up, cuz we all been taught to respect the dominant way to write, even if we dont, cant, or wont ever write that one way ourselves.

by expanding our perspective about writing and code switching, we are able to recognize and distinguish the difference between the two.

    1. dont believe the writin problems of graduate students is due to lack of standard English; they problems likely come from learnin new theories and new ways of thinkin and tryin to express that clearly, which take some time. New ideas dont always come out clear and understandable the first few times they expressed.

Very true it is hard to interrupt your perspective using academic language within literature as many teachers portray a right and wrong answer .

    2. various cultural perspectives. And we should teach what it take to understand, listen, and write in multiple dialects simultaneously

this is how you teach english because no matter how much you want a student to write a certain way you can't force it out of them everybody's writing style is different.

    3. One of his points almost on da money— the one when he say teachers of writin courses need to spend a lot of time dealin straight with writin, not only with topics of war, gender, race, and peace. But he dont like no black English and Native American rhetoric mixing with standard English. Yeah, he tell teachers to fake like students have language rites. He say, If students infected with the facile egalitarianism of soft multi-culturalism declare, “I have a right to my own language,” reply, “Yes, you do, and I am not here to take that language from you; I’m here to teach you another one.” (Who could object to learn-ing a second language?) And then get on with it. (Fish “Part 3”)

I love how he includes both styles of writing how one feels when we are in this situations of having to be stripped of our native tongue.

    4. sATTITUDES. It be the way folks with some power perceive other people’s language

    2. We undertook this project because the college-dropout crisis is a major contributor to American inequality

it is becoming predictable because of how many inequalities there are with the education system. I think the real question is how can we make the system or provide equal opportunity for all.

    3. olleges have lower graduation rates when they enroll more lower-income students, more black and Latino students, more men, more older students and more students with low SAT or ACT scores.

this is sad because I think it is not about the race it is solely based on the opportunities one has had since he/she was an adolescent. Extra tutoring, advanced classed , advanced schools , and internships are all factors that could break or make one's high school career

    4. College matters so much because it isn’t just about book learning or the development of tangible skills. It’s one of the first obstacle courses of adult life. The students who complete it typically go on to earn more and live healthier and happier lives, research shows.

It is the battle of pushing yourself which students are starting to realize and building that foundation for yourself.

    5. students

This is something high schools should take into consideration, it would improve the foundation for subjects students have most difficulty in such as science and math. Due to students taking more advanced classes than others the foundation and success is almost predetermined.

    1. We do not write in a vacuum; you are writing to someone about something. If your intended audience is not clear, please ask your professor.

This is very important, to make sure we know the audience.

Is there a way to recognize the audience without asking your professor? what context clues reveal the audience in whom we targeting ?

    2. hesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process,

As readers we often have difficulty to begin our approach to critical thinking or lengthy thinking for thesis , how can we ensure or start up this critical thinking process every essay to ensure a good thesis ?

    3. your professors should always inform you of whom your intended audience is for an assignment since this knowledge will allow you to shape your paper in response to your intended audience. We do not write in a vacuum; you are writing to someone about something. If your intended audience is not clear, please ask your professor.

How can we satisfy our professors wants within our literature if they aren't very direct and expansive in their initial directions ? In my Race and policy class, He doesn't provide zooms and post all assignments weekly and they are lengthy assignments which requires a lot of deep analysis and critical thinking and it is hard to satisfy the requirements with minimal directions and lots of prewritten concepts on topics such as counter narrative and how to do a counternarrative.

    4. The assignment’s task will determine the general topic of your paper and what you think about this topic will focus it further. For some assignments, you will be given a specific topic whereas for other assignments, you will have free reign to determine the topic yourself.

Within the topic, we can brainstorm ideas in which help narrow our focus and direction with our writing

    5. you are able to consider and address the purpose of the writing situation. Consider why you are writing the paper — Are you persuading your audience? Are you informing them? Are you showing them something you have discovered or are contemplating? What do you want your audience to do, feel, or think after reading your paper?

Having purpose can help your literature have a deeper purpose and may even touch others.

    6. s we addressed in the writing process, discovering who is your intended audience reveals to you how to construct your thesis statement and entire paper. Your intended audience determines how much background information you will need to include in the paper and the tone and language you will use. (And once more, your real audience is you, your peers, your professor.)

This is very true and can be used as a helpful tip in writing as we are now aware of the direction and audience our writing is directed towards

    1. “active learning” is how you will learn best as a college student.

something that is very difficult to learn and grasp in college because the circumstances is very different.

    2. We highly recommend readers of this text to engage in any such active and experiential learning opportunities your University offers; beyond learning in new ways, studies have shown that engaging in such opportunities, including Study Abroad, networking in student organizations, and gaining experience-based internships, students are happier, more successful, and ultimately get more from their college experience.

This should be applied more often because students will want to keep up with the work and would want to come to class, everyone loves a class that doesn't feel like class.

    3. Active learning as a college student is when you engage in more experience-based and project-based learning where you ask your own questions, solve problems on your own, teach each other in groups, and learn through interaction with your professor and their ideas, as opposed to passively taking in ideas through reading and lecture.

This is what we practice in class which I enjoy because it allows us to be honest in breakout rooms and figure it out without always having the teacher guide us

    4. academic identity, we start with The Writing Project, an essay project about how your identity has been shaped until now; about who you are before you entered our classrooms. Essays that deal with personal experiences and identity are called narratives, and generally tell a personal story or stories that have greater symbolism and/or meaning for how the author sees themselves and defines their identity.

This is a good foundation as we can grow from our mistakes and deeply dive into the topics that we discuss and start to learn in class

    5. they argue that English is not a fixed language, yet has still been used to uphold fixed standard for achievement tests where naturally those who have continually “failed” come out believing that “reading and writing is not for them.

This is influenced heavily in school because there is always a right or wrong response when literature should be inclusive of all ideas.

    6. Depending on various factors from audience, to the academic discipline, to the assignment prompt, college writing is different from high school. If you are reading this textbook, you are preparing your mindset to be open to these differences, to use strategies that match your learning styles, and to succeed as a college reader and writer—which will help you thrive in all parts of your life. By viewing college reading and writing with a more open perspective, and viewing your own diverse ways of learning with a more strategic point of view, reading can be for everybody.

the art of a growth mindset in which you approach things with an open perspective absorbing all ideas and concepts openly.

    7. I spend a great deal of my time thinkingabout the power of language—the way it canevoke an emotion, a visual image, a complexidea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool ofmy trade.

    8. I've often used the samekind of English with him, and sometimes he evenuses it with me. It has become our language of inti-macy, a different sort of English that relates tofamily talk, the language I grew up with.

This applies in many cultures and in mine as well, it is considered very disrespectful to talk back to your parents but it is hard because having all of this standards allows them to get away with too much. I learned this at an early age and was considered a " trouble child "amongst the family because I spoke my mind and was everyone was too afraid to say and yes you do get in a lot of trouble or even a beating or belittled but it is better than taming your " wild tongue "
