This paper focuses on how loss of biodiversity can influence ecosystem functioning and urges research to help measure biodiversity in an effective manner. This research analyzes current ecosystems (terrestrial and aquatic) and illustrates in its figures how anthropogenic drivers limit diversity and promote biotic homogenization. This paper urges to rethink biodiversity and it's importance, as the topic has been around since its formal introduction in 1992.
