    1. Humility and Patience of the Inhabitants

This reminds me of the book we mentioned in class (the name is Looking Towards the East or something). Most of the descriptions of the Indians are written by the European, which, I believe, would inevitably involve some "sympathy" that portrays them as utterly innocent victims.

    1. The Dutch advanced the slave trade and brought African slaves with them to the New World.

I've always thought the Englishmen bought the slaves from Africa.

    2. than on establishing a successful French colonial footprint.

Is it because the French did not have the problems (depression in cloth industry, inflation, dispossessed peasants, etc.) that the Englishmen were having?

    3. Oñate ordered one foot cut off of every surviving male

Were they duplicating the way of treating captives back in Europe or this was specifically done to the "barbarians"?

    1. our politics

Some countries are employing the political system they developed(or learned from other countries) not too long ago while others are using the one that has been gradually transforming over centuries. But even the "newly developed" or "borrowed" political systems can't be exempted from being influenced by the nation's history. For example, the Provisional Government of the Republic of China, which was established in 1912, was ideally aimed to copy the democratic political system from the West. However, though it forced the last emperor of the Qing dynasty to abdicate. It continued to offer protection as well as money to the imperial family. The failure of this government is also greatly due to people's unswerving loyalty to the emperor as well as the monarchy.
