      This may be useful for novels. But may not be suitable for short stories, which can be snippets of a complete story, taking a more fragmented form. But nonetheless, to keep an eye on story arc will benefit you in terms of understanding what this story is about.

    2. themes are complete statements– they cannot be expressed in a single word.

      Themes are statement, a revelation distilled by the author by way of the story. I need to understand better about how to get better at identifying themes - so to form my own.

    3. mark up all the examples of character traits and development, themes, symbols, diction, syntax, figurative language, and any other devices your teacher may require you to find.

      Need a colour scheme to keep track of all important points. Must make one of my own to do this.

    4. Try to take notes at the end of each scene, act, event, flashback, chapter, or other natural structural element.

      Segment your attention by scene/act/event/flashback/chapter and other structural elements.

    5. Get through the exposition, where the main characters and setting are introduced (usually the first 1-2 chapters), before even picking up a pen.
