This article explains the Luddites and how they opposed new machinery by destroying them. They did this to protest because the workers were being replaced by the machines and also their wages were being decreased. The movement was suppressed as the military took over and used force to stop them.

    1. We hope that by the end of this book you know a lot of social media terminology (e.g., context collapse, parasocial relationships, the network effect, etc.), that you have a good overview of how social media works and is used, and what design decisions are made in how social media works, and the consequences of those decisions.

The readings have actually shown me how many of these concepts are actually practiced on social media. Which now I understand that certain peoples objective is to get a negative reaction from the audience. But also how not everyone thinks the same on different topics because of their ethical believes.

    1. The European Union passed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) [s50] law, which forces companies to protect user information in certain ways and give users a “right to be forgotten” [s51] online

I never knew that this was a law. It's really interesting seeing how these unions are trying to protect the users. It's important since it's meant to help users have privacy to their information.

    1. Trauma and Shame. URL: https://www.oohctoolbox.org.au/trauma-and-shame (visited on 2023-12-10).

This article shows us how there's a healthy approach to shame and teaching toddlers how to handle it. Showing us that it's important to show limits to young children but also repair that shame with empathy and acceptance. This will show the children how feeling shame is a normal emotion but you can grow from it.

    1. The term “cancel culture” can be used for public shaming and criticism, but is used in a variety of ways, and it doesn’t refer to just one thing.

I think it's interesting how the definition for this term holds a lot of meaning. Because it's from simple misinterpretations of something to literal sexual harassment. But I also think that with "cancel culture" it doesn't really solve the problem of the persons action. I've seen a lot of people on social media be "canceled" but then go off social media for a bit and come back like nothing happened.

This article tells us that doxing is when personal information about someone is shared without the consent of the person. I've seen how that can affect someones life on social media. I've noticed that when someone gets "canceled" for something they did people will reveal their personal information to attack them such as their address.

    1. Have you experienced or witnessed harassment on social media (that you are willing to share about)?

Nowadays there's so much harassment and bullying online. On social medias people feel like they have the authority to say their opinion even if it's harming. I've seen so many hateful comments attacking someone on multiple social media apps and it's really shocking to see.

    1. GoFundMe: #1 Fundraising Platform for Crowdfunding. URL: https://www.gofundme.com/ (visited on 2023-12-08).

GoFundMe is a website where anyone can be able to donate money to someone or something in need. I think this website is truly helpful to those in need and in need of fundraising. The website is inspiring in the sense that it causes people to come together and help others.

    1. But there are ways that attempts to recreate in-person interactions inevitably fall short and don’t feel the same.

This reminds me of the pandemic and how we had to do all forms of communication through zoom and social media it felt very disorienting. Because growing up having to interact in-person to suddenly being dependent on the internet for everything caused a lot of people to lose that sense of human interaction since it was such a long time. Honestly, I think interacting online and having email and all these options are very accessible and great. But nothing can truly beat and have the same effect of interacting face-to-face with another person.
