This was used as a way to devalue time spent on social media sites, and to dismiss harms that occurred on them.
That's pretty interesting, I thought it was meant to be ironic. Like "there's no way they can be for real right now" type of thing.
What motivated Twitter users to put time and energy into this?
I think the reason so many people put effort into responding to this is similar to modern ragebait, except this wasn't outrage on purpose, just outrage. Whenever people see something that they consider wrong or something they generally disagree with, they're often inclined to speak up about it.
