The passions that incline men to peace are fear of death, desire of such thingsas are necessary to commodious living, and a hope by their industry to obtainthem. And reason suggesteth convenient articles of peace, upon which menmay be drawn to agreement. These articles are they which otherwise are calledthe Laws of Nature, whereof I shall speak more particularly in the two followingchapters.14© 1993–2020 Bartleby.com ·
I think the author is trying to say that human desires for peace start from desires for self-preservation, well-being, and the creation of laws.
-
To this war of every man against every man this also is consequent, thatnothing can be unjust. The notions of right and wrong, justice and injustice, have there no place. Where there is no common power, there is no law; whereno law, no injustice.
In such a chaotic and lawless condition, the concepts of justice and injustice cease to exist. In a society without a governing power, the traditional moral distinctions between right and wrong become irrelevant.
-
peradventure
used to express uncertainty or possibility
-
Let himtherefore consider with himself, when taking a journey, he arms himself andseeks to go well accompanied; when going to sleep, he locks his doors; wheneven in his house, he locks his chests; and this when he knows there be lawsand public officers armed to revenge all injuries shall be done him; what opinionhe has of his fellow-subjects when he rides armed; of his fellow-citizens, whenhe locks his doors; and of his children and servants, when he locks his chests.Does he not there as much accuse mankind by his actions as I do by mywords?
The author questions what the person's actions say about their trust in others. It implies that these precautions might indicate a lack of trust in fellow humans, and the person's actions speak volumes about their view of others. As humans we can be very cynical.
-
3/4Whatsoever therefore is consequent to a time or war where every man isenemy to every man, the same is consequent to the time wherein men livewithout other security than what their own strength and their own invention shallfurnish them withal
this is highlighting that living in a state of constant conflict or without any external protection can lead to similar issues as those faced in a time of war.
-
during the time men live without a common power tokeep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war, and such awar as is of every man against every man
This is so true. When there is not some form of authority in place such as a government, there will be a state of chaos or war. We see that directly in dystopian societies which lack a government or in post-apocalyptic societies.
-
there is no way for any man to securehimself so reasonable as anticipation
suggests that the most sensible way for a person to protect themselves is by foreseeing or anticipating potential challenges and taking measures to address them in advance. Being prepared for possible difficulties or risks is seen as a reasonable and effective way to ensure one's own safety or well-being.
-
where an invader hath no more to fear than another man’s single power, ifone plant, sow, build, or possess, a convenient seat others may probably beexpected to come prepared with forces united to dispossess and deprive himnot only of the fruit of his labor but also of his life or liberty.
The emphasizes the importance of having rules or a system in place to prevent such conflicts and protect individuals from potential harm when they engage in productive activities.
-
But this provethrather that men are in that point equal than unequal.
people make a point to put humans into groups based on race, likes and dislikes, religion etc; but this is saying that we are more equal than we realize. We are more alike than we differ.
-
Forprudence is but experience
This is saying that being cautious and careful with your actions comes from experience through time and learning.
-
prudence
the quality of being cautious
-
the weakest has strength enough to kill thestrongest, either by secret machination or by confederacy with others that are inthe same danger with himself
this reminds me of the quote "the enemy of an enemy is your friend", people typically band and join forces over a common problem. This is also saying that there is strength in numbers.

If civilization imposes such great sacrifices not only on man's sexuality but on his aggressivity, we canunderstand better why it is hard for him to be happy in that civilization.
I think that restrictions on peoples rights and choices are what created the mess that society is in the first place, but also, without rules, laws and restrictions, society would be chaotic, so I am not really sure which side is right
-
If private property were abolished, all wealth held in common, andeveryone allowed to share in the enjoyment of it, ill-will and hostility would disappear among men.Since everyone's needs would be satisfied, no one would have any reason to regard another as hisenemy; all would willingly undertake the work that was necessary.
I think that this is why people go off the grid and live in nature, not under societies rules as was talked about earlier in the text.
-
The ownership of private wealth gives the individual power
they say that money is the root of all evil, but perhaps it is asctauly power
-
Homo homini lupus
does that mean that men are violent to each other? If so I agree.
-
'Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself.
This is much easier said than done. With regards to society and civilization though, this is probably the approach we should take in order to keep things more orderly and peaceful among people.
-
In order for these aims to be fulfilled, a restriction upon sexual life isunavoidable.
That is such a stretch and encroachment upon someones rights.
-

Only the weaklings
here it seems that Freud is being ableist..by saying "weaklings"
-
Present- day civilization makes it plain that it will only permit sexualrelationships on the basis of a solitary, indissoluble bond between one man and one woman, and that itdoes not like sexuality as a source of pleasure in its own right and is only prepared to tolerate it becausethere is so far no substitute for it as a means of propagating the human race.
basically, sex is only good when it is a monogomous heterosexual relationship used to procreate and populate the earth. Not when it is used for passion, love, pleasure or anteing that make humans happy. And they wonder why people are displeased with society..
-
outlawry
act of putting a person beyond the protection of the law for his refusal to become amenable to the court having legal jurisdiction
-
We said there that man's discovery that sexual (genital)love afforded him the strongest experiences of satisfaction, and in fact provided him with the prototypeof all happiness, must have suggested to him that he should continue to seek the satisfaction ofhappiness in his life along the path of sexual relations and that he should make genital erotism thecentral point of his life.
I hate to say it...but I agree with Freud here. Going along with the women being more emotional stereotype, men seem to place a LOT of emphasis on sex to the point where it is the center of their life. In relationships,
-
Women represent the interests of the family and of sexual life.
I really had this limited view of women. It is what created the traditional gender role of the domesticated women who stays at home to cook, clean, take care of children, and please her husband.
-
But the family will not give the individual up. The more closely the membersof a family are attached to one another, the more often do they tend to cut themselves off from others, and the more difficult is it for them to enter into the wider circle of life
I do not necessarily agree with this. I believe that when you are close to your family and have a HEALTHY relationship with them, you are also able to have healthy connections with other people in society.
-
which made the man unwilling to be deprived of his sexual object -the woman -and made thewoman unwilling to be deprived of the part of herself which had been separated off from her -her child.
he sees men as needing women for sex and women as needing their children for love/comfort. I think that says a lot about the difference between the two genders, and feeds into the stereotype that women are inherently emotional and men are inherently and naturally sexual.
-
When this happened, themale acquired a motive for keeping the female, or, speaking more generally, his sexual objects, nearhim; while the female, who did not want to be separated from her helpless young, was obliged, in theirinterests, to remain with the stronger male
The controversiality of Freud is definitely shown in his statement here. A lot of his theories on the psyche and gender relationships are probably based on this restricted view of women as being a useful tool for men when needed.
-
: the manner in which the relationships of men to one another, their social relationships, areregulated - relationships which affect a person as a neighbour, as a source of help, as another person'ssexual object, as a member of a family and of a State. Here it is especially difficult to keep clear ofparticular ideal demands and to see what is civilized in general
as a psychology major (taking social psychology now), I think that this is the primary driver of society and its different aspects. The way we interact with each other is very complex and dependent upon the situation. Truly each situation is different and each interaction between people is based upon the environment, the atmosphere, who is present, personalities, etc;
-
The usefulness of order is quite evident. With regard to cleanliness, we must bear in mindthat it is demanded of us by hygiene as well,
this statement makes me think of the saying "cleanliness is next to godliness"

-
Man has, as it were, become a kind of prosthetic God.
at first look, I have many issues with this statement, do to my piety. However, after looking deeper, I realize that he is correct. In the sense that people try to mimic God or "play God" by trying to have control over things that only he does.
-
making the earth serviceable to them
dominion over nature and its resources :seems to be a primary source of problems
-
Happiness, however, is something essentially subjective
Since happiness is subjective, is it even possible for humans as a whole to be happy and satisfied with life? A good life and flourishing society for one person may be near-dystopia and awful experience for the next person base on their values and beliefs.
-
If there had been no railway to conquer distances, my child wouldnever have left his native town and I should need no telephone to hear has voice; if travelling across theocean by ship had not been introduced, my friend would not have embarked on his sea-voyage and Ishould not need a cable to relieve my anxiety about him
I think that these advances to technology and industry are great ,but the issue comes in when people get power-hungry and start to abuse these advances and want to control them and the resources that provide them. It causes them to abuse the resources and tax others to use them.
-
Does it meannothing that medicine has succeeded in enormously reducing infant mortality and the danger ofinfection for women in childbirth, and, indeed, in considerably lengthening the average life of a civilizedman
This is the upside to all of the advances made with civilization. Yes, things becoming modernized is scary, but like he said it has improved the overall health of people.

a person becomes neurotic because he cannot tolerate the amount of frustration whichsociety imposes on him in the service of its cultural ideals, and it was inferred from this that theabolition or reduction of those demands would result in a return to possibilities of happiness
If this is what deems a person neurotic, then I think that we all can be neurotic at times. I find it interesting that in older times they labeled people as eccentric, or crazy, or "neurotic" for having different views about society or views that differed from traditional ones.
-
we should be much happier if we gave it up and returned to primitive conditions
sometimes I think about this. I wonder if we have actually ruined society by being so innovative and industrialized. I know that there are groups of people who leave society to live more primitive lives and from what I hear they enjoy it and are happier. They are not worried about power hierarchies, and things of modern society. I recently saw an interview and the celebrity brought up the question as to why we have to pay for things like water and fruits and vegetables when God put them on this earth for us to have and use to live.
-
If we cannot remove allsuffering, we can remove some, and we can mitigate some:
I think this is a really good point when it comes to our role in society. There is a lot of suffering, disorder and chaos that surrounds us and as humans, we can not solve it all or find a solution to every problem that faces mankind, however we CAN do our part. We can still make a difference no matter how big or small and try to alleviate problems that face our community through volunteer work and activism.
-
why it is so hard for men to be happy
I think that this question is so simple yet so important. You would think that as humans, our natural state would desire happiness and peace yet we do things to disrupt those two things like fight over land, people and property. I really hope that through this text, this question is answered.

an enclosing structure of forces andbarriers which tends to the immobilization and reduction of a group or category of people"
I like that this quote uses the word immobilize, because that is exactly what oppression does. It attempts to stop the progress of the group and hold them stagnant; prevent them from invoking change and progress in their situation and in their communities.
-
Obviously the above-named groups are not oppressed to the same extentor in the same ways. In the most general sense, all oppryssed people suffersome inhibition of their ability to develop and exercise their capacities andexpress their needs, thoughts, and feelings. In that abstract sense all oppressedpeople face a common condition.
although people in these groups are not oppressed in the same ways, they often have similar experiences when facing oppression and form community through this. This paragraph actually makes me think of the intersectionality of oppression. For example, as a Black queer woman, I am apart of three different minority groups at once, which makes my experience completely different than a white queer woman or a black queer man.
-
Many people in the United States would not choose the term "oppression"
I think that this is an interesting statement. I agree with it because a lot of people, especially Caucasian people are fearful and try to stay away from words like oppression, which imply that people are being treated incorrectly. However in order to talk about injustice in America, you must address (systematic) oppression of people and groups.
