I remember just a few - Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, Pecos Bill- but a quick search revealed interesting media representations of these characters. Are these characters evolving (devolving?) from mystical explanations of natural phenomena into second rate cartoon characters? Do they live on only in the readers and writer's workshop?
