This is an interesting study, but I feel it's a little too close to a study published by my own lab' last year... http://www.jbc.org/content/291/38/20188.abstract

Specifically, several of the findings in this new paper are repeats of findings in our paper (such as the pH sensitive nature of 2HG generation by LDH and MDH, and the discovery that 2HG underlies acid induction of HIF). While it's always great to have your work validated, it's also nice to be CITED when that happens.

Our study was posted on BioRXiv on May 3rd 2016 (http://biorxiv.org/content/early/2016/05/03/051599), 6 weeks before this paper was submitted to Nature Chem Biol. At that time we also submitted to a journal where the senior author here is on the editorial board, only to be rejected. Our paper was finally published by JBC in August, >4 months before the revised version of this current study was submitted.

Furthermore, during the revision of our work, another paper came out from the lab of Josh Rabinowitz, showing 2HG generation by LDH, and also demonstrating pH sensitivity Teng X, 2016. We put an addendum in our JBC paper to specifically mention this work as a "note in added proof". The current paper doesnt' cite the Rabinowitz study either.
