Ernest Mayr, who  enunciated this  principle  with  exceptional clarity when confronted by calculations demonstrating  the staggering improbability of a certain Darwinian claim: “Somehow or other,” he replied, “by adjusting these figures, we will come out all right. We are comforted by the fact that evolution has occurred.”
