    1. CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY makes it much easier to set up trustless CoinJoins than previously because participants agree on a single output which pays all participants, which will be lower fee than before. Further Each participant doesn't need to know the totality of the outputs committed to by that output, they only have to verify their own sub-tree will pay them.

Again, this is misleading. The participants still need to agree. Doesn't matter if they're agreeing on a bunch of outputs or on a single output that then spends to a bunch of outputs. And the fees won't be lower, they will be higher.

    2. Increased Channel Routes In the Lightning Network protocol, Hashed Time Locked Contracts (HTLCS) are used in the construction of channels. A new HTLC is required per route that the channel is serving in. In BOLT #2, this maximum number of HTLCs in a channel is hard limited to 483 as the maximum safe size to prevent the transaction from being too large to be valid. In common software implementations such as LND, this limit is set much lower to 12 HTLCS. This is because accepting a larger number of HTLCS makes it more difficult for transactions to confirm during congested periods as they must pay higher fees. Therefore, similarly to how congestion control is handled for normal transaction, lightning channel updates can be done across an CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY tree, allowing nodes to safely use many more HTLCS. Because each HTLC can have its own relative time lock in the tree, this also improves the latency sensitivity of the lightning protocol on contested channel close.

Lightning implementations limit the number of HTLCs because otherwise the commitment transaction becomes too expensive.

This trick would make the redeeming of these HTLCs more expensive, just the expenses would happen across the time instead of all at once.

Doesn't seem like an improvement to anything. Just adds cost and complexity.

And most HTLCs are not economical to redeem anyway.

    3. Non-Interactive Channels When opening a traditional payment channel, both parties to the channel must participate. This is because the channel uses pre-signed multi-sig transactions to ensure that a channel can always be exited by either party, before entering. With CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY, it’s possible for a single party to construct a channel which either party can exit from without requiring signatures from both parties. These payment channels can operate in one direction, paying to the channel "listener" without need for their private key to be online.

Again not Lightning channels, and then one needs two transactions just to create the channel -- and then it only works on one side?

Maybe this is a good idea if user A wants to send a bunch of payments to user B in that single channel that doesn't interoperate with anyone else, if it's really non-interactive. But I can't imagine concrete relevant use cases.

Generally requiring interactivity is an issue when the receiving end is a user that doesn't have an online wallet so Lightning doesn't work for them on that case -- it's hard to imagine many cases of services opening these wasteful channels to each user, or friends opening this kind of channel between themselves just to send a few bucks.

    4. Using CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY for Channel Factories is similar to the use for Congestion Control, except the leaf node transactions are channels instead of plain payments. The channel can be between the sender and recipient or a target of recipient's choice. Using an CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY, the recipient may give the sender an address which makes a tree of channels unbeknownst to them. These channels are time insensitive for setup, as all punishments are relative timelocked to the penultimate transaction node. Thus, coins sent using a congestion controlled transaction can still enjoy instant liquidity.

If this refers to Lightning channels then it can't work because they're necessarily interactive anyway and they can already be opened in batched transactions so I don't understand how this is supposed to work or be an improvement.

Since "Lightning" is not mentioned here it seems these are some other kind of channel that is less useful than Lightning channels.

    5. Channel Factories

I think this is a misuse of the term "Channel Factories" which referred originally to multiparty channels powered by Eltoo. The idea there was not to make channels (although the name implies that) but to actually have a super channel with child channels inside it. These child channels can later exit the super channel and become their own, but that's a worst case scenario. Ideally they don't have to do this because they will just keep working within the super channel and not consume extra blockchain space.

    6. When there is a high demand for blockspace it becomes very expensive to make transactions. A large volume payment processor may aggregate all their payments into a single O(1) transaction commitment for purposes of confirmation using CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY. Then, some time later, the payments can be expanded out of that UTXO when the demand for blockspace is decreased. These payments can be structured in a tree-like fashion to reduce individual costs of redemption.

So the idea here is to actually increase blockchain space usage while simultaneously adding the requirement for the users who are withdrawing to have a wallet that understand OP_CTV and the way these transactions are batched? Sounds like a bad idea.

Even if I'm wrong on the specifics the general argument sounds weak: instead of making a single big transaction that will cost relatively less (or pay relatively more on fees for that) the idea is that exchanges will prefer to make a larger number of smaller transactions to reduce the immediate cost but increase the cost in the future? And then most users will have to wait anyway.

Why not make a single big transaction and just wait until it clears from the mempool?

Even if I'm wrong twice on the above and this is actually a good idea, this sounds like a super niche and debatable use case and it's hard to imagine anyone supporting it.

    1. Will this process yield interesting products? Will we get different looking beasts, living different kinds of lives? My guess is yes. Dembski's is no. And that is, I suppose, fine. He's entitled to his guess. But don't let him tell you that it follows ineluctably from some mathematical theorem because it doesn't.

So I suppose no one should let darwinists tell you that darwinism is absolutely indisputably true?

    2. If, as he oddly continues to claim, the NFL theorems pose a problem for Darwinism, why don't they pose a problem for a little Darwinism? The NFL theorems don't say anything about scale. To say then, as Dembski does, that a little bit of Darwinism is okay (despite NFL) but a lot is bad (because of NFL) is to say something odd.

Because the fitting function is different in the case of small darwinism -- and the environment isn't random. I don't know.

    3. The reason is this history starts at zero complexity. On average it can only go up (where we cannot see the descendants of lineages that crashed and burned back into zero complexity). There are also good reasons for thinking that organisms get stuck at higher levels of complexity.

Now this guy is begging the question. Dembski would say the history of life must be that way because of intelligent design, not due to small darwinism.

    4. The problem with all this is so simple that I hate to bring it up. But here goes: Darwinism isn't trying to reach a prespecified target. Darwinism, I regret to report, is sheer cold demographics. Darwinism says that my sequence has more kids than your sequence and so my sequence gets common and yours gets rare.

So this guy concedes the "no free lunch" argument entirely, and his assumption now only relies on saying that the specified complexity has no meaning at all -- because there's no goal.

The specified complexity claim, however, says there is indeed a goal -- or at least a goal that was reached, and that it has meaning.

    5. Plenty of scientists have, after all, been attracted to the notion that natural laws reflect (in some way that's necessarily poorly articulated) an intelligence or aesthetic sensibility. This is the religion of Einstein, who spoke of "the grandeur of reason incarnate in existence" and of the scientist's "religious feeling [that] takes the form of a rapturous amazement at the harmony of natural law." (This or something like it is also the religion of the young Chesterton with whom I began this essay.) This mild mysticism is fairly common among scientists, especially physicists and mathematicians. What's attractive about this view—which is of course thoroughly religious, not scientific—is that it at least requires no violation of methodological naturalism. The miraculous is not some alleged departure from natural law but the law itself.

Isn't this the same as saying that the environment and the fitting function are intelligently designed? The author seems to be fine with this "reason incarnate in existence", but it is basically the same thing Dembski was saying above when talking about no-free-lunch. The "natural law" is the design.

    1. But apparently about 2/3 of the deaths have been in Lombardy (in Northern Italy; Milan is the capital), which has about 1/6 of Italy's population. If the daily deaths are likewise 2/3 in Lombardy (not certain, because it's possible that the geographical incidence of the deaths has changed over time), then we're talking about 240 or so extra deaths per day on top of the usual 300 or so in Lombardy, or about 80%.

Now this is a completely different trick, much more interesting. The guy arbitrarily transfer the deaths of the entire country to Lombardy, does some basic math with population and then calculates the new rate. Science!

    2. Italy's population is about 60 million, and its normal death rate is 10.6 per 1000, which is to say about 640,000 deaths per year, or about 1750 per day; the 350 or so extra deaths per day over the last couple of days (if this worldometers.info data is correct) are about 20%.

How can one not realize this flagrant petitio principii here? The guy wants to say: "Look how coronavirus is bad, death rates up 20%!", but he doesn't do that by taking actual death counts and comparing them with previous data. No, he assumes some average death rate then adds deaths supposedly from coronavirus.

If you didn't notice the error, dear reader, I will leave it as an exercise.

    1. This is already happening but there needs to be a Manhattan Project-like activity to find a vaccine. The world is going to need it.

Moments after saying that "immunity from Covid-19 is still an open scientific question" this brilliant professor now has his hopes on a vaccine. So apparently you are already settled immunity is a thing, now that you need money flowing into research labs?

    2. Putting in place measures to conscript anyone who can be useful in this task. Conscription is an ugly word but you are not sending anyone to fight or die. You are putting people to work.

"You are putting people to work", just like the slave owners this crazy guy probably think aren't very good people.

    3. Taking control of all bed, medical device and related manufacturing capacity. I don’t mean this physically but I do mean this in terms of being able to direct activity.

      All socialism.

    4. Placing the military in charge of health care expansion nation-wide.

      This is ridiculous.

    5. Building out that capacity requires a new mindset and it requires it quickly. The great news is that we — and by we I mean the generation who were adults in World War II — have done this before. Entire economies were shifted over to military production.

Now the very dumb professor starts advocating socialism plain and simple, as if it was a really good idea -- because he is afraid and says we need it.

    6. This gives you a sense of the issue. Some countries have four to five times the capacity than others. One imagines that intra-country regional variation is just as big. There are nuances when it comes to ICUs and ventilators, etc. But the bottom line is: Even in optimistic flattening the curve scenarios, the curve cannot flatten enough.

After showing a graph that compares countries by the number of hospital beds they have, the dumb professor concludes this, as a complete non sequitur. Actually two non sequiturs in a row.

    7. Now for the bad news. The flattening the curve diagram is potentially misleading. In fact, it could look more like this:

This dumb professor thinks the "flatten the curve" diagrams are an attempt at actually describing where does the "health care capacity" in relation to the curves with all proportionality.

No, sir, it's just an illustration. And they design the curves, sharp and flattened, to match the hypothetical line that describes the health care capacity.

    1. From reading this I'm left with the impression that the housing boom was just a housing boom, not a general long-term projects boom, as you would expect from the ABCT.

Why was housiing and just housing the epicenter of the boom and bust? Or wasn't it?

If it was just housing, couldn't we explain it (or at least conceive of a different hypothetical scenario) without interest rates even changing? Imagine that the government prints money and uses it to pay companies to build houses -- or creates a special lending program just for houses, but don't messes up with the general interest rate -, wouldn't that have basically the same effect?

If so, perhaps we should start considering a new ABCT version that just talks about new money being created and going to specific sectors, instead of the whole interest/intertemporal adjustments/hayekian triangles talk. Why is this wrong?

    2. In reality, it's more accurate to say that during the boom period, entrepreneurs (led by false signals) invest in projects that are individually rational and "efficient," but that don't mesh with each other. In other words, it's not so much that a farmer forgets to plant some of the seed corn in order to have a future crop. Rather, it's that a farmer plans on expanding his output, and so he plants much more than he did in the past, but unbeknownst to him, the owners of the silos and railroads (needed to bring the harvest to market) aren't expanding their own operations at the same pace.

And the farmer borrows money to do that.

    3. It's not that people switched from buying hot dogs to hamburgers; instead they switched from buying "present consumption" to buying "future consumption."

What if we said that people switched from buying hot dogs to bonds? Not anything "future", just a bond, today.

If they switched to hamburgers, that would increase investment in the hamburger industry in expense of the hot dog industry.

In the same way, if they switch to bonds, that will increase the investment in the "bonds industry", which is basically lending money.

    1. Because the capital structure of the economy becomes internally inconsistent, eventually some entrepreneurs must abandon their projects because there are insufficient capital goods to carry them all to completion.

This argument have confused me my entire life in all explanations of the Austrian Business Cycle Theory. It is the core of the most famous of all, that Mises story about the master builder who doesn't have enough material to finish the house he's building.

It is misleading and ultimately wrong because economic goods (in the Menger definition) are always insufficient. In simple terms, given the market price, every good can be obtained.

What happens after the economy realizes it was in a malinvestment boom, prices of capital goods adjust in a way that they can become too expensive for some projects to be completed profitably.

    1. The investment to increase production volume is still in anticipation of future demand — not a response to existing demand.

      Maior insight do mundo.

    1. "Lazy", "stale", "reactive". Lots of buzzwords.

Here's a simple explanation for the fullName/nickName magic (fullName stops being watched if nickName exists):

On every component render, Mobx registers all the attributes they've accessed on state, so it will trigger a forceUpdate on them whenever one of these attributes change.

If at one render (when there's a nickname) some attribute is not accessed (fullName), the MobX will not register an access on that attribute, so subseqüent changes of that attribute will not trigger forceUpdates anymore.

If for some reason that attribute (fullName) is accessed ever again (either due to nickName ceasing to exist or due to some other internal component logic) that value is simply given to the component and it starts to be observed again and to trigger forceUpdates again on that component.

    1. The most important justification for progressive tax rates is the idea of marginal utility.

      Utility is subjective and personal.

    2. But suppose on the way to Wal-Mart, you see a random mom-and-pop store that looks interesting. What do you know about its safety standards? Nothing.

There exists trust. You trust a lot of people you don't know every day -- you also do the opposite and don't shop in stores that look suspicious today.

You can also trust small business whose owner or previous records you know personally, that also happens a lot today.

Besides that, in a libertarian world law would exist and solve part of these problems: https://hypothes.is/a/PBirDvnYEeaWvjeIs4H9kg.

    3. Right, well of course people don’t look up product information now because the government regulates that for them. In a real libertarian society, they would be more proactive.

Most people don't care, or trust the big companies. I do that. I also think that the existence of some government regulation incentive companies to not sell poisoned food.

On the other hand, there is certification, independent certification, and these are being used today and trusted by people today. It's reasonable to supposed independent certification would be much much greater in a libertarian world.

Of course certification would not cover every field, every product and every possible problem, but neither does the State.

    4. Why should the government protect people from their own irrational choices?

If "lack of mental energy" to think about issues and make positive choices is a problem, giving the State the right to choose is not a solution. Look at pension plans, for example. What has the State done right or better than individuals in this area? Using subsidies doesn't count.

    5. But if the employees are making demonstrably irrational choices because of a lack of mental energy

To not think about stuff and just follow what other people are doing is to make a rational choice.

    6. For a boss to fire a worker is at most a minor inconvenience; for a worker to lose a job is a disaster. The Holmes-Rahe Stress Scale, a measure of the comparative stress level of different life events, puts being fired at 47 units, worse than the death of a close friend and nearly as bad as a jail term. Tellingly, “firing one of your employees” failed to make the scale.

Because of State labor laws, stupid. They make it hard to change jobs, hard to fire workers and hence hard to hire workers. In a libertarian world this would in principle be much smoother.

    7. Her new job may require a completely different life routine, including working different hours, learning different skills, or moving to an entirely new city. And because people often get promoted based on seniority, she probably won’t be as well paid or have as many opportunities as she did at her old company. And of course, there’s always the chance she won’t find another job at all, or will only find one in a much less tolerable field like fast food.

      This is all unfunded preconceptions.

    8. Maybe the boss has one hundred employees. Each of these employees only has one job. If the boss decides she dislikes an employee, she can drive her to quit and still be 99% as productive while she looks for a replacement; once the replacement is found, the company will go on exactly as smoothly as before.

This guy know nothing of economics. He thinks productivity of a single firm is actually, in the real world, a Cobb-Douglas function. Also he thinks the world is made of big companies only.

    9. Once the employee is hired, the boss may ask on a moment’s notice that she work a half hour longer or else she’s fired, and she may not dare to even complain. On the other hand, if she were to so much as ask to be allowed to start work thirty minutes later to get more sleep or else she’ll quit, she might well be laughed out of the company. A boss may, and very often does, yell at an employee who has made a minor mistake, telling her how stupid and worthless she is, but rarely could an employee get away with even politely mentioning the mistake of a boss, even if it is many times as unforgivable.

Here and after the author treats as a libertarian problem what happens today under the rule of the State labor laws.

In a world without State labor laws, contracts would apply. Contracts could evolve and have all these situations expected in their clauses. Also, this seems to me to be a case for actually working law (which the criticism imagines as unexisting in a libertarian society): https://hypothes.is/a/PBirDvnYEeaWvjeIs4H9kg.

    10. the boss rarely is

This is a lie, probably based on the author's first and second-hand experience with huge companies and none with small businesses.

    11. Let’s say Wanda’s Widgets has one million customers. Each customer pays it $100 per year, for a total income of $100 million. Each customer prefers Wanda to her competitor Wayland, who charges $150 for widgets of equal quality. Now let’s say Wanda’s Widgets does some unspeakably horrible act which makes it $10 million per year, but offends every one of its million customers.

If the person doesn't care if it is "offended" then that's ok, it can still buy. If it is offended in a way the common law qualifies as punishable then the person can sue, and lawsuits are expensive for the company. If the offence is not sufficiently serious then the person should either move to a different culture or try to change its culture, it is not a matter of State, but of law and culture.

    12. I’m not convinced that it’s really that hard to get a boycott going

Boycotts are stupid as a solution to a societal problem. No person in its right mind should use them in an argument.

    13. The classic libertarian solution to this problem is to try to find a way to privatize the shared resource (in this case, the lake).

This is a hard problem, but the lake must have an owner, or some bizarre magical special juridical property that someone must come up with. Anyway, this whole example treats it as "public" resource, hence the tragedy of the commons follow.

Ok, it seems that the lake may be owned by someone and the rivers that go into it owned by other people, so the problem arises. This seems to me to be a case for law: https://hypothes.is/a/PBirDvnYEeaWvjeIs4H9kg.

Probably there could be a way for the lake owner to sue the people who are damaging the lake, or these sue the lake owner for their lack of productivity.

    14. 1.2: But aren’t there are libertarian ways to solve externalities that don’t involve the use of force?

Well, this article forgets about law. Law and justice still would exist in a libertarian society.

I haven't read the rest of the article, but this is probably the answer to most of his criticisms of libertarianism, and it is fair that this guy is missing it, because law is difficult and most libertarians forget about it or think that purely monetary transactions between persons would solve everything, thus making libertarianism a crazy creed (as I've done myself for a time).

    1. This guy raises the stupid Liar Paradox multiple times, in different contexts, while making his explanations, and every time he states that "philosophers have worried about this for thousands of years".

Well, I've never seen a true philosopher dedicate a long time to this question, or even to consider it a question or a problem or an inconsistency in the world we must solve -- I can only see this guy and his fellow mathematicians do that.

Nor it is true that Gödel's theorem is a form of Liar Paradox, it is not. The fact that these mathematicians keep bringing the Liar Paradox to explain Gödel's theorem to the public makes it seem like they are terrified by it, and actually attribute an enormous value to it.

    1. The obvious followup question|and what if a programdiddo all those things?|is often leftunasked, or else answered by listing more things that a computer program could self-evidentlynever do. Because of this, I suspect that many people whosaythey consider AI a metaphysicalimpossibility, really consider it only a practical impossibility: they simply have not carried therequisite thought experiment far enough to see the di erence between the two.

This man cannot understand that if something is a metaphysical impossibility, then a sane person must not try to imagine it, or what should happen if that thing is true. That's idleness and represents a real danger to one's intelligence.

For example; imagine if you were not only you, but all other people; imagine that you had no other choice, but only to kill your father or your mother; imagine that you had no sense of self-responsibility.

Of course if it happens that this thing is not a metaphysical impossibility, then all these people he is considering would be wrong, but at least they were consistent.

    2. Personally, I see no reason to accept Godel's intuition on this subject over the consensus ofmodern biology!

If you accept this bizarre interpretation, then you can suspend the belief in the fact, known to everybody, that \(P \ne NP\), because it hasn't been mathematically proved, and say the question isn't solved yet. Wow, how interesting!

    1. To put it plainly, no reputation system is resistant to a Vendor purchasing their own items and making false-positive ratings. This is especially true of a pseudonymous decentralized marketplace, where Buyer identities are — by default — undisclosed. Even a web-of-trust model, which is excellent at detecting suspicious islands of ‘reputable’ users, will not be able to distinguish between real and fake ratings of a Vendor.

Maybe all reputation schemes that try to assign a globally valid rating to users will be bad. Perhaps the only solution is to let the context fall and do not perform any kind of calculation/assignment.

If you're reading this, do not forget the Content-Type. It is not on the initial example, but it is important. I don't understand why the author mentions it here but doesn't use it on the initial source.

    1. The author almost realized the much more important conclusion of the fact he lived. He shouldn't conclude the article by asking "what is the purpose of studying maths?" and then giving an three stupid answers.

He should have asked: is this actually "knowledge" as they say academia brings to society? Is the money researchers earn being well spent? Did I actually deserve to be remunerated by this piece of work no one understands -- and, in fact, no one has read except for maybe three people?

    1. Don't buy from this website, their advertisments are misleading. After connecting my Paypal account to pay 0.20 USD for a photo, they automatically, after one week, debted 59 USD from my card.

A tactic against government "employee-protection" measures, you should note.

    2. I found that we do a lot to keep our strong feelings away from the employer

And you probably think it is better to direct strong feelings to the employer, blame him and everything will be ok, right? Otherwise why would you point this?

    1. What is a ubiquitous language? A set of terms used by all people involved in the domain, domain model, implementation, and backends. The idea is to avoid translation, because as Eric Evans points out, Translation blunts communication and makes knowledge crunching anemic. That is, every time we have to translate concepts between people — "oh, you're using 'user' in these cases where I'm using 'account'" — we lose a direct ability to think clearly about the thing we are building and to let new knowledge flow back and forth between domain and implementation. Investing in a ubiquitous language pays off in that it makes communication clearer, and allows teams to see more opportunities.

    1. Ernest Mayr, who  enunciated this  principle  with  exceptional clarity when confronted by calculations demonstrating  the staggering improbability of a certain Darwinian claim: “Somehow or other,” he replied, “by adjusting these figures, we will come out all right. We are comforted by the fact that evolution has occurred.”

    2. as Brent Tully (known for his discovery of supergalaxies) observed: “It’s disturbing  that there is a new theory every time there is a new observation.”

"When the facts change I can my mind, don't you, sir?"

    3. Let me begin by recalling an event: When in 1965 Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson picked up signals from outer space said to derive from the microwave background, the New York Times announced the event with the headline: “SIGNALS IMPLY A BIG BANG UNIVERSE.” By way of contrast, let me now recall what happened in 1887, when Albert Michelson and Edward Morley conducted their experiment designed to measure the velocity of the earth in its orbital motion around the sun. What they found, to the dismay of the scientific community, was that this velocity is not the expected 30 or so kilometers per second, but turns out to be precisely zero! And let us note that there was nothing uncertain or tenuous in this conclusion: based upon the laws of what is nowadays, in retrospect, termed “classical” physics, the fact that the earth does not move was strictly implied by the outcome ofthe experiment. But whereas this result sent shock waves through the upper strata of the scientific world, the public at large was told little. Most assuredly, there was no banner headline proclaiming that “MEASUREMENTS IMPLY AN IMMOBILE  EARTH,” which unlike the 1965 caption, would not have been a mere journalistic exaggeration, but indeed a scientifically accurate statement.

    1. No culture in history has been more distracted. If you are wondering why there are no more C.S. Lewis’ in the world, no more stories as good as Tolkien’s, no cathedrals as great as the gothic’s, no music as moving as Pachelbel’s, it may be because the writers of these books, the tellers of these stories, the architects of these buildings and the composers of these symphonies are sitting on their couches watching television. I wonder what’s on tonight.

Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, gothic cathedrals, Pachelbel suddenly represent the essence of the good western culture.

      • proliferação dos romances de cavalaria;
      • religião como o domínio do sentimento depois da revolução francesa, afim de que ela não fosse eliminada;

      -- O julgamento pertence a Deus.

-- O julgamento pertence a Deus!

    1. Stockholm City Council now has an official housing queue, where 1 day waiting = 1 point. To get an apartment you need both money for the rent and enough points to be the first in line. Recently an apartment in inner Stockholm became available. In just 5 days, 2000 people had applied for the apartment. The person who got the apartment had been waiting in the official housing queue since 1989!

    3. "I knew investigators who simply did state that 'this is a really secure job that helps me out'."

    1. The right to collect taxes for a particular region would be auctioned every few years for a value that (in theory) approximated the tax available for collection in that region. The payment to Rome was treated as a loan and the publicani would receive interest on their payment at the end of the collection period. In addition, any excess (over their bid) tax collected would be pure profit for the publicani.

      olhaí a treta.
