Ephraim Squier (1821–1888)Squier was an Ohio newspaperman who later became a diplomat. He is best known for his work on the prehistoric mounds with Edwin Davis (1811–1888), an Ohio physician. Between 1845 and 1847 they excavated over 200 mounds, and accurately surveyed many other earthworks. Their landmark volume of 1848, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley, was the first publication of the newly founded Smithsonian Institution, and is still useful
