Many women may go through a medication-assisted therapy or opioid-assisted therapy. Many are prescribed methadone, which is regularly used for addicts to wean them off of heroin.

Opioid use disorder is the addiction to opioids. The main red flag of this, would be that the person overtakes the prescription, which in return causes strong cravings for the drug. Because addiction alters your decision making, you could have problems with work, family, friends, school, etc.

Quitting opioids cold turkey is harmful for the mother and the baby. They are at risk for placental abruption. This is where the placenta separates from the uterus, which can cause server bleeding and can be life threatening. It can also cause preterm labor, growth issues and stillbirth.

Besides miscarriage, opioid usage during pregancy can cause preterm labor and premature birth. Both are very dangerous for the baby.
