Rebooting how you design a car is one thing. Rebooting your business model at the same time is a entirely different game.
I would say, it is not only the speed at which companies can change their business model, it is also the willingness. The German car manufacturers are just not willing, they easily could change if there was sufficient pressure. With soaring sales in China, German car manufacturers seem to think this will keep them afloat. There is actually much more to think about: What happens when the world will only need one third of the cars needed today? What happens when the inequality between rich and poor reaches its peek?
There is also one big advantage that Elon Musk holds, which is that he takes the big decisions. All the other car companies have boards of directors and much stiffer share holders than Tesla.
Tesla's share holders have vision. Daimler's, Audi's, Porsch's ... share holders are vicious.
