Nor shall the voice of war molest,
The revolutionary war gave this nation the ability to have a voice. Without war that may not have occurred.

“I prefer not
This line is repeated a few times by Bartleby then the narrator himself is the narrator taking on traits of him out of grieving or just because its that contagious. when asked if he wants to eat he says this phrase and dies soon after. is that just Bartleby as a person or is it spreading throughout the office?

Herman Melville
Melville is the author of the classic Moby Dick. Is this a response to it is Bartleby a response to the novel? did some googling and it would appear there may be a connection.

The storm
A storm is destroying the house and a storm of sickness killed the house of usher
-
“The Fall of the House of Usher”
The title seems to be suggesting not only the physician structure of the house is collapsing but also the family itself. The brother and sister were the only Ushers left. They are laid to rest as well as the family tree.

And now, some days of bitter grief having elapsed, an observable change came over the features of the mental disorder of my friend. His ordinary manner had vanished. His ordinary occupations were neglected or forgotten. He roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue –but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. The once occasional huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror, habitually characterized his utterance. There were times, indeed, when I thought his unceasingly agitated mind was labouring with some oppressive secret, to divulge which he struggled for the necessary courage.
The sister started out insane and had similar symptoms. now towards the end of the story the role has been reversed and her brother is now ill. he will meet the same fate as his twin. Both came into the world the same, looked the same, now they shall die the same too. This family has horrible luck

virago
You're not alone in word confusion. This word means a violent bad tempered woman
-
Their tempers, doubtless, are rendered pliant and malleable in the fiery furnace of domestic tribulation, and a curtain-lecture is worth all the sermons in the world for teaching the virtues of patience and long-suffering.
Sitting through a three hour class does build a tolerance to these things. learning the facts of life while learning how to remain idle for so long.

I should be glad to dwell at considerably more length
This whole passage feels considerably long. This is by far the longest intro I have ever seen. Why is he adding so much extra content to set up the rest of the story? Will it come full circle?
-
The word "scarlet" appears one hundred and sixteen times in this introduction
