    1. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.

      As third grade students are developing their literacy skills it is important for them to distinguish between words that are apart of what is actually happening in the story and non literal language which is not.

    2. Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters.

      It is important for student to be able to formulate their own opinions about the text but also to know how those opinions differentiate from the narrator and also the characters in the story.
