    1. I have been enjoying using Miro to get the feel of stickies, but with an easier method for long-distance collaboration and solving the storage issue.

    1. Now the crucial paradox which confronts us here is that the whole process of education occurs within a social framework and is designed to perpetuate the aims of society.

All the talk about teaching/teachers and not as much about the process/social framework...

    1. Actively advocate for (work towards) breaking down oppressive systems, instead of asking how to use your power and privilege (which maintains the status quo)

I so often see examples of the opposite of this - and recognize how essential it is in creating the change we want to see.

    2. Write a letter to a government official to advocate (e.g. for increased educational funding focused on affirming and building from Black students' strengths, curricular change, removing police from schools, etc.)

I had a similar assignment in one of my classes in the past and it wasn't a success. I realized that what I took for granted in being something students were already equipped to do needed a lot more scaffolding than I anticipated. I want to do better next time.

    1. ‘Oh...Xo!’ exclaimed the teacher after a long pause, explaining that is what they call her in class since it is easier for her and her fellow students.

Just awful. Easier for you, ehh?

    2. the day after the election of Donald Trump

...was reading on Twitter this morning someone sharing that they had an 8am exam the day after the 2020 presidential election... #changeyoursyllabus #ugh

    3. the rock pushing begins before conception, with the sting of infertility

Isn't that the truth? It was for us, anyway...

    1. because the narratives, long foisted upon us, about the necessity of ed-tech

This so often comes with the misguided beliefs that some of us "have it" and some don't. By "have it" - I mean these edtech skills that remain elusive for so many. What if we could collectively not feel so intimidated by the tech, while also recognizing that what they're trying to sell us isn't what's being promised.

I was so pleased to have been introduced to Debbie Reese's work and to now have been following her on Twitter for some time now.

    1. Their energy is the energy of liberation and for those who seek liberation, to see this lived out on an international stage is intoxicating.

      Intoxicating, indeed.

    2. She’s not only showing us she won, she’s inviting us to join her in the win.

This articulates so well how I felt each time I saw her during that time. And I'm not even a person who watches sports very often or has much knowledge of them.

    1. Test-enhanced learning has been referred to by a number of different terms over the years; testing effects, retrieval practice effects, retrieval-enhanced learning, low stakes quizzes, and practice tests, to name a few.

Various names for the testing effect... Retrieval practice... etc.

    1. You’ve got to be close enough to understand the work and the people well.

This idea of proximity as vital to creating social change is one I keep seeing more and more. Bryan Stevenson spoke about this so powerfully when I had a chance to see him speak last year.

    1. “zooming in”

I'm curious what other examples of "zooming in" are? This is an intriguing idea for me... Zooming in and zooming out. Thank you, Gardner.

    1. In Jesus Christ, there is no male or female. What if we fully lived into these words?

They left this part out of the Nashville statement. I guess it would have been too inconvenient for them.

    1. I don't think there's ever been a president elected who in this short period of time has done what we've done.

Something tells me that we're going to be seeing a lot of memes created out of this sentence.

    1. Teaching is a radical act of hope.

      Amen.

    2. Reclaim assessment for what it is meant to do: to show what our students can do as a result our classes.

This is one of the reasons I'm becoming increasingly interested in public sphere pedagogy.

    3. Kids These Days are just like Kids in My Day, or Any Other Day, if we choose to remember honestly.

I have had some healthy reminders along the way of what I was like as a student in college. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed having me in class, except in social sciences coursework (where I was most comfortable).

    4. If I want my students to take risks and not be afraid to fail then I need to take risks and not be afraid to fail.

I'm starting to notice more one way that this fear of failure manifests itself. If I say that I am just not a "techy" person, then I don't have to ever learn a new tool and maybe not quite put myself in the best light when/if it doesn't work.

    2. Public sphere pedagogy (Thia Wolf)

This episode is still inspiring me, even months after talking to Thia. I'm testing out Hypothesis as a means for allowing people to comment on particular episodes that have inspired them.
