Voegelin begins by tracing Hegel’s response to the spiritual emptiness of post-Reformation Europe—the “boredom of the world” in which God seems absent. Hegel interprets history as a succession of divine reconciliations culminating in philosophy itself as a new, self-sacralizing “third religion.” For Voegelin, this marks the fateful turn from philosophy as humble love of wisdom toward philosophy as revelation: Hegel transforms thought into a redemptive act meant to heal the world’s fragmentation without recourse to God. Voegelin identifies three layers in Hegel’s existence: the genuine philosopher seeking spiritual order, the mystic shaped by Boehme and Pietism, and the imaginative “sorcerer” constructing a visionary “Second Reality.” In the Phenomenology of Spirit, this imaginative layer dominates. Hegel’s “system of science” abolishes the distinction between man and God by making consciousness the sole reality—an infinite Spirit that realizes itself through history until it attains “absolute knowledge.” Voegelin calls this a magical act of self-apotheosis: a conjuring of meaning that substitutes an immanent, man-made cosmos for the participatory reality of divine order. In his view, Hegel’s dialectic becomes not a description of experience but a “grimoire,” a book of spells that transforms human reason into the new locus of the sacred. The result, Voegelin argues, is a paradigm of modern spiritual disease. Hegel’s fusion of philosophy, religion, and power—his celebration of Napoleon as “World-Soul on horseback,” his vision of history culminating in his own system—turns intellectual insight into a form of libido dominandi. By seeking to reconcile the world through speculative thought, Hegel becomes the archetype of modern gnosis: a thinker who mistakes imaginative mastery for redemption.
