A contribution to this line of thinking is the literature on recombinant knowledge, exploiting a key insight in Schumpeter (1912) and Usher (1954) that innovations result from new, untried combinations of existing elements
Never tried before mixes of ideas lead to innovations. How to promote this way of working in organisations is a challenge when most of the effort goes into performance orientated tasks.
