Reading both of these pieces gave me a better understanding of modes and how they are used around the world. I plan on using these terms in real life, but also in my future work to describe different teaching and learning methods.
-
Throughout the article, the author speaks about the nuclear waste we have buried around world with signs and rules telling people not to dig there. Due to our understanding we know that a red or yellow sign usually means “stop” or “do not enter”. The author poses the question, what if in the future humans either don’t understand the signs or choose to disobey them and dig anyway.
-
The supplemental reading helped me understand the primary more in terms of the visual mode. The article spoke about how written language gradually transferred to visual language in items such as the stop sign or a sign telling driver’s to yield.

In terms of when to use the modes, I think the article does a great job of helping me understand. However the supplemental reading really helped cement the ideas in my head.
-
Gestural mode is also one I think I have sealed in the bag, when I make facial expressions everyone around me knows exactly what I am thinking at that moment.
-
Spatial mode would work alot depending on your clientele, I think at a more fancy establishment it would play a bigger part than somewhere not as nice.
-
The spatial mode is one that I would would not fair too well in, I haven't always been the best at placement.
-
I found it interesting that the aural mode spoke about emotions. I have always felt that different music put me in different modes, but I never really thought about it in terms of marketing. Like a trendy store like H&M would have upbeat music to complement the type of clothing they sell in there.
-
As soon as I read about the Aural mode I thought about the music you hear while holding for a big company or elevator music to keep you entertained while waiting.
-
I can see why the visual mode is effective, people like being entertained while also gaining something. So it never hurts to add eye candy.
-
Linguistic Mode would probably be the one I use most often, because of my fairly good being humble speaking abilities.
-
Just me being a business major, I think about how these different techniques could be used on different customers at a retail store.
-
Before reading this primary text, I was unaware of how much research went into multimodeling.

1968 was truly a year of protest around the world.
Was this the most active protest era globally in history?
-
Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King Jr., walks on the arm of Dr. Ralph Abernathy, her husband's successor as head of the Southern Christian Leadership conference, leading about 10,000 people in a memorial march to the slain Dr. King. The King children, Yolanda, Martin III, and Dexter are at left with Harry Belafonte. Reverend Andrew Young marches next to Dr. Abernathy. #
What kept protestors going after seeing how gruesome protest can end? (MLK assassination)
-
This aerial view shows clouds of smoke rising from burning buildings in northeast Washington, D.C., on April 5, 1968. The fires resulted from rioting and demonstrations after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. # AP
Due to MLK's practice of peaceful protest, would he have agreed with the reaction to his death by citizens?
-
Civil-rights leader Andrew Young (left) and others stand on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel pointing in the direction of an assailant after the assassination of civil-rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who is lying at their feet, in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
Had this assignation not occurred, how would the world be different?
-
One of the last pictures to be taken of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as he spoke to a mass rally in Memphis on April 3rd, saying he would not halt his plans for a massive demonstration scheduled for April 8 in spite of a federal injunction.
Throughout MLK's tireless work and dedication to change, do we owe our current state of somewhat equality to him?
-
A half-century ago, much of the world appeared to be in a state of crisis. Protests erupted in France, Czechoslovakia. Germany, Mexico, Brazil, the United States, and many other places.
Really makes you think how very different the world could be right now had this events ended differently.

One is the skill of giving specific concrete examples in an essay.
This is a skill taught by teachers since elementary school, however every teachers idea of "concrete" is different. Every grade level I go up the idea of concrete becomes deeper and deeper. Now in my freshman year of college I realize that a concrete detail doesn't have t necessarily be the longest description, but it does need to be the most clear description.
-
What skills do these students lack? She quotes Nell Scharff, an instructional expert brought in by the school, as saying, "How did the kids in our target group go wrong? What skills were missing?"
Haltman thoroughly covered this in his essay, by stating that writers need to analyze and deduct before annotating to grasp the idea of the reading. This will help when having to describe objects or tell the meaning of a reading.

The Secret to Good Writing: It's About Objects, Not Ideas
The title immediately grasped my attention, because I never heard anyone say that before and I was curious to see where the author was going with the piece.

Description→Deduction->Speculation->Research->Interpretive Analysis
An interpretive analysis should come only after fully understanding a text and the goal it is trying to achieve.
-
A research prospectus should be detailed enough to give a clear sense of what in your object has given rise to interpretation.
It should not be difficult for the reader to follow you in your interpretation of an object. Your thoughts should be clear and concise.
-
Without pleasure taken in the work of the imagination, nothing of the sort is possible.
You must think heavily when describing things and think outside the normal thought process. It is your interpretation therefore it should not fall under anyone else's umbrella of ideas.
-
we do not analyze objects; we analyze our descriptions of objects●writing constitutesanalysis: we do not really see with clarity what we have not said that we have seen
This statement relates heavily to the supplement reading I have chosen , "The Secret to Good Writing". Describing an object comes from clear and concrete details. Our descriptions of a object helps readers understand the object better, the clear our description, the clearer the object becomes for the reader without actually seeing it.

the most persistent object metaphors expressive of belief”
People interpret things differently and it can be based off prior beliefs or how you were raised. For example, the term "football", if you grew up in Europe you would think of that word as what we commonly refer to as "soccer". However in the U.S football is a totally different sport. And thats not to say who is right, just a difference in interpretation.
-
All objects signify; some signify more expressively than others.
This is stating although two objects can both be interpreted, one could be looked at in a deeper sense than the other one. For example, a rock and a laptop are both items that can be described. But because of the laptop's complexity the description can go on longer.

These essays share, as well, a spirit of imaginative intervention in the study ofhistory.
Through reading this text I have t come upon it with an open-mindedness attitude, because different people perceive text differently.
-
methodology
a system of methods used in a particular area of study or activity.
-
THE ESSAYS COLLECTED in this volume, intended for both scholars and students, exemplify the methodology they share, familiarly known as Prownian analysis, the history and theoretical underpinnings of which are elucidated by Jules Prown himself in the Preface and opening contribution to this volume.
Beginning this reading, I had a very hard time understanding what the author was trying to say and comprehending the extensive vocabulary used. However once I read "The Secret to Good writing" by John Maguire, I have a better understanding of what the text is trying to say. It is basically attempting to describe how to describe objects in a text.
-
Description provides the bridge between the realm of the material and thatof concepts and ideas.
This quote made me think a lot about the entire process of describing an item. Different people have different ideas about things. So descriptions certainly do serve as the latter to objects and individuals concepts and ideas.
