For patients suffering from depression or anxiety, working memory is often impaired. Apps serving these population must be designed to generate a low cognitive load, the total mental activity imposed on working memory. A simple UI reduces cognitive load and increases capacity for learning. Features that reduce cognitive load include: (I) the use of pictures rather than text; (II) reduced sentence lengths; (III) inclusive, nonclinical language (14).

STATE OF THE FIELD OF MENTAL HEALTH APP https://sci-hub.do/10.1016/j.cbpra.2018.01.002
PsyberGuide : a review site for mental health apps
The most widely used rating system for mental health apps is the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS), which provides an objective, multidimensional rating of health app quality and usability (Stoyanov et al., 2015).
y. Privacy and security is a foremost concern of clinicians and end users for mental health apps (Dennison, Morrison, Conway, & Yardley, 2013; Schueller et al., 2016).
Unsupported apps are less costly than supported or blended options with fewer access barriers (e.g., setting up a time to chat with a provider), but have also been found to be less effective than those with some form of human involvement (Schueller, Tomasino, Mohr, 2017), which often introduces an element of accountability.
