  If you have a better/simpler/"more official" solution, I'd still love to see it!
  
  The "official" solution is to use submitErrors (see Erik's answer).
  
  official preferred convention / way to do something I _guess_ this is how we do it (uncertainty; wish I knew the recommended/best way but for now I just need a way that works)
