This source is important because it helps the reader to understand how even though there were free blacks in the United States, they still did not have any safety against white people who were willing to take advantage of them.
-
Frances Thompson (colored) better known as “Aunt Crutchie,” who for the past twenty-seven years has gone about this city in female garb, was arrested yesterday, and after medical examination was pronounced a member of the male sex.
This relates to our lectures because it demonstrates the limited legal rights of a black person, even after being subjected to such horrible acts. It also demonstrates the value of a white person's words versus a black person's words.
-
Dr. Riley, a colored doctor, afterwards examined me. I was in bed two weeks later.
This is important to understanding the sources context because only a black doctor could treat a black person, even as such a horrible act was committed on her.
-
hey said they must have supper, and asked me what I had, and said they must have some eggs, and ham, and biscuit. I made them some biscuit and some strong coffee, and they all sat down and ate.
This is so important to not because it shows the constant and never ending fear the black people had to go through, even being free. Black people didn't have their safety guaranteed and so even just refusing a white person of even the most outrageous requests was dangerous. This specifically applies to black women, who not only had to be afraid because they were black people interacting with white people, but because the were black women interacting with white men.

The Market Revolution was a period of economic growth and America's expansion into a capitalist economy. During this time not only were there economic changes but political changes, such as the development of democracy, changes in the Slave trade and the limitation of democracy in groups of people in America who contributed to the economy, whether directly, such as slave labor, or indirectly such as indigenous people who were removed from their land to open property for America to buy and use the resources obtained from there.

She was the daughter of Washington boardinghouse proprietors, and her humble origins and combination of beauty, outspokenness, and familiarity with so many men in the boardinghouse had led to gossip
This statement shows the the roles of non white men had in society v.s. everyone else (women, black Americans, immigrants, etc.) How society treated people who weren't white men.
-
Thanks to his political connections, Jackson obtained a general’s commission at the outbreak of the War of 1812. Despite having no combat experience, General Jackson quickly impressed his troops, who nicknamed him “Old Hickory” after a particularly tough kind of tree.
This statement shows Jackson's appeal to the people who met and came into contact with him. Jackson seemed to appeal to a great number of people for his resilience and military strength, which no wonder lead him to political positions and eventually presidency.
-
Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767, on the border between North and South Carolina, to two immigrants from northern Ireland. He grew up during dangerous times.
Coming from a more humble background and starting from the ground up in life, Jackson was unlike the previous presidents before him, in that they came from middle to upper class backgrounds. This is important because Andrew Jackson aided in the rise of American democracy (in some ways), allowing for a greater number of people to vote and have a say in political subjects, showing his anti-elitism as democracy was a fear of many of the founding fathers.

Bring in the information about the United States but also be sure to include information about other countries too. Could also be a time to bring up the Blasphemy laws in states like Maryland.

The researchers further found that this effect was motivated by the assumption that the atheist employees were trying to impose their beliefs on others.
Good point to reference, maybe also a way to leading into a new paragraph including personal experiences with other religious beliefs being forced onto athiests.

Thomas Paine, whose “Common Sense” had sold half a million copies the year that the United States declared its independence, died an outcast because of a later pamphlet he wrote on religion. Attacking the King of England was fine, but when Paine, in “The Age of Reason,” set his sights on the King of Kings, he was derided as a “loathsome reptile” and a “filthy little atheist.” It didn’t matter that Paine, like Jefferson, actually identified as a Deist, or that his text opens with the blunt declaration “I believe in one God”; his criticisms of Christianity were so scandalous that he was written into history as a nonbeliever.
Good as a source for credibility. Many people including historians and christians know of Thomas Paine and his work.
-
Much of the animosity and opprobrium directed at nonbelievers in America comes from the suspicion that those who do not believe in God could not possibly believe in anything else, moral or otherwise.
Why is America hesitant towards Atheists? Possibly because it has been thought to be that Atheists don't believe in a higher divine being, and therefore lack a belief in all things, including morals and humanity.

And no child in highschool regardless should be able to do that either because of dresscode, horny hormone infused teenage boys, and you never know if some of the teacher are attracted to children.
The writer of this argument does not use a specific type of evidence (first-hand, second-hand, and quantitative). The writer does not use facts proven by trustworthy authority, personal experience that would be reasoning for the writers opinion, or data that can be measured, but rather simply stating their opinion as evidence.
-
My point is school is ment to be a safe learning ground, so let's keep it that way.”
The writer uses a claim of value, saying school is meant to be a safe place for learning, and implying that when minors or exercising shirtless, school is no long such a place, but rather dangerous and an unfit place for learning.
-
on feilds or to exercise
Chloe Nelson Argument Structure: Unlike using a Rogerian Argument, the writer never looks at any other viewpoint. A concession or refutation would have furthered the argument, especially in this highlighted section where an argument from an opposing viewpoint may say that it is appropriate for high school students to exercise in sports bras while exercising.
-
gives kids the idea they can dress that way inside of school
Chloe Neslon Logical Fallacies: Begging the Question - This claim is based on evidence that seems questionable and it is given without a source, making the claim seem untrustworthy.
-
So
Chloe Nelson: Types of Evidence: This argument does not contain any evidence, inserting first-hand evidence here should have been done in order for the claim to be supported and make the reader trust the argument.
-
My point is school is ment to be a safe learning ground, so let's keep it that way.”
Chloe Nelson: Argument Structure: This is the claim for the Toulmin model, although not explicitly stated, the writer concludes that high schools, girls specifically, would be less safe with girls being allowed to be in sports bras.
-
horny hormone infused teenage boys,
Chloe Nelson: Argument Structure: For the Toulmin model, there is never any evidence used to support the assumptions, causing the argument to lack authority.
-
because of dresscode,
Chloe Nelson: Argument Structure: This is the warrant/assumption for the Toulmin model, the writer is assuming that high schools have dress codes that prevent high-schoolers from not wearing shirts, and the reader most likely shares the same view.
-
I find it disgusting
Chloe Nelson: Logical Fallacy: False Authority - This writer states their personal opinion, and in the next sentence uses their opinion almost as evidence or a fact to claim that high schoolers in sports bras is "borderline child pornography," when in reality, the only thing back them up is their own authority.
-
horny hormone infused teenage boys, and you never know if some of the teacher are attracted to children.
The speaker uses the slippy slope fallacy in their argument. While it is possible for teenagers (namely boys according to the speaker) to sexualize minors in only sports bras and no shirt, it's an extreme case to assume all teenage boys would do so. The same applies to teachers sexualizing minors, as it is possible, it's an extreme case to assume all teachers or even any would do so.
-
because of dresscode, horny hormone infused teenage boys, and you never know if some of the teacher are attracted to children.
The speaker uses confirmation bias, providing evidence as to why minors should not be allowed to exercise or be on school property without shirt without providing any reason as to why a child in school may do so, and providing a counter argument. The speaker uses first hand evidence that supports the speaker claim while also ignoring contradictory evidence.
-
Yes, age played a part. I find it disgusting and degrading that any parent would let their minor child run aroun in shorts and a bra anywhere.
The speaker of the text is using a claim of value, stating that minors should not be able to exercise or be on school property without a shirt covering specifically bras. The speaker believes age to be a main contributor. The speaker is stating because of age, it is wrong to allow minors to exercise on school property. This is the speakers point of view.
-
I find it disgusting and degrading that any parent would let their minor child run aroun in shorts and a bra anywhere
Assuming the speakers audience is a high school student's parent, the speaker specifically attacks the audience, saying they find it "disgusting and degrading that any parent would let their minor child run aroun in shorts and a bra anywhere". This is using the Ad hominem fallacy.
-
I find it disgusting and degrading that any parent would let their minor child run aroun in shorts and a bra anywhere
The speaker of this text uses a negative tone (specifically a disgusted tone) when talking about minor children "running around in shorts and a bra". However, bra's are often tied to the female anatomy, however the speaker uses "child" when speaking about the intended argument. This could be because the speaker only has an issue with people who wear bras without a shirt while exercising but doesn't with people who society deems unrequired to wear bras.
