    1. Nature notesWhen the sun comes out, banded demoiselle damselflies rise from the reeds. With their metallic blue bodies and iridescent wings glinting, they drift over the little river. These are males searching for the green-sheened females. At 4.5cm long, banded demoiselle are our biggest damselflies, and at a glance resemble a blend of hummingbird and butterfly. Yet they spend only a brief part of their life shining glamorously under the sun. For the past two years, they have skulked in the river mud and waterweed in larval form. During this underwater existence, their six long, spider-like legs and trident tail make them look more like a monster from Doctor Who. Jonathan Tulloch

In 1835, he wrote in his journal, “I still accept an imperative of knowledge, through which men may be influenced, but then it must come alive in me, and this is what I now recognize as the most important of all. This is what my soul thirsts for as the African deserts thirst for water. This is what I need to live, a completely human life and not merely one of knowledge”.  Displaying the profound influence of Socrates on his intellectual formation, he added that “a man must first learn to know himself before knowing anything else”.
