Within Gone Home, the player is forced to grapple with a queer romance from the perspective of an outsider. Acting as Sam’s older sister puts the player in a mental space not of a girl discovering herself, but instead seeing the impacts that that exploration had on the entire family. You are forced to see both the concerns of their parents in the downturn of Sam’s grades and increased disciplinary actions at school, as well as the joy of Sam as she is able to finally be herself. The outside perspective that the player puts in forces a complete evaluation of the situation, wanting to be happy for Sam while still having to consider what her running away means for the family.
