I interpreted this statement as the founders of the University recognizing how the students who will attend the school will come to face many different views than their own. Students may encounter this “difference of opinion” both inside and outside of the classroom, as these views can foster debate within Discussion sections of classes or within political debate forums. The evident variety of opinions creates a well-rounded student, as they learn to consider many different points-of-view to gain a better understanding of a subject. -Komal Kamdar

I had previous knowledge that the University has a unique history with slavery, yet I found it interesting how the author chose to list the slaves mentioned here as property alongside the other land acquisitions. The 57 slaves noted in this line were dehumanized and treated as property to be bought and sold. The evidence of slavery literally being in the founding document of this University demonstrates how although the school has a racist past, we can move forward today by recognizing, addressing, and recontextualizing the past dehumanization of individuals. -Komal Kamdar

I find it interesting how the author of the report discusses the idea of self-governance, yet specifically among students. However, the University had not yet been able to attain it. It is also interesting how the report does not elaborate on the idea of the students self-governing themselves, yet the University has taken the idea very seriously. Today, student self-governance is a major facet of the foundation and community at the University, due to the variety of benefits it provides for the school. I believe the use of the phrase "honorary excitements" is extremely interesting, as it is very ambiguous in comparison to the other facets of the “education of youth” the author listed earlier. Aside from tuition, diet, lodging, and government, "honorary excitements" could include any and every activity to make the student a more wholesome individual. In addition to their studies, “honorary excitements” seem to promote student involvement in a variety of extracurricular activities. From community engagement to sports, these activities allow the student to develop skills that they may not be able to learn just inside the classroom. UVA greatly promotes the idea of a community in which students are active.The University has greatly implemented this concept of “honorary excitements” throughout the years, as there are hundreds of clubs and organizations available for students to join. -Komal Kamdar, Morgan Negron, and Lyudmila Avagyan
