When looking at the question if the connections we make online are meaningful. I think it is important to realize that your online presence can be controlled however you want it to be and you have time to think about what you want to post or say. The author talked about the intimacy of social media and talked about how it is the sharing of ones actions, beliefs, or emotions(2-2). With that definition I think that it is easy to say that the relationships you build online are not meaningful because it is so easy to control what you want to put out. When you are in person your reactions are more natural and meaningful.
I disagree that online environments limit the potential of developing close relationships. I have seen that with the online life we have now you can meet people you have never met before and develop an in person relationship with them just from meeting them online. The author brings up the question of "Does one not need to be close to experience nearness?" in the article. I think the simple answer to that question is yes, you do not need to be close. You can feel nearness through online talking, I just believe that it is less meaningful until you meet online.
