    1. Ben Galdys, digital and creative services manager at the Department of Communication and the Arts, says the open-source platform has allowed the agency to create its own “Have Your Say” module for interested parties to submit comments on legislation, releases and other events.
    2. From adopting an entirely open-source platform, to allowing collaboration between agencies through a universal technology system and using agile development processes to support rapid deployment, along with partnering with a respected and robust enterprise group, govCMS has enabled the Australian government to explore and adopt fundamental tenants of a digital, innovative economy.

    1. The technical details of how this might work are beyond the scope of this post, but with today's computer technology we don't have to rely on correlatable identifiers.

      An overview of how it works, geared to a mainstream audience, but still doing justice to the underlying tech, would be a really valuable New York Times op-ed.

    1. Lastly, a public permissionedledger designedexclusively for identity has security,privacy,and resiliency properties similar totheInternetitself.

      Again, I wonder if this isn't a primary advantage.

    2. Another advantage of a public permissionedledger is thatpermissioningensures itcanbe“fit for purpose”, i.e., dedicatedentirely toself-sovereignidentity,ratherthanageneralised“do anything” ledger

      I wonder if this might be the primary advantage?

    3. No “mining” is requiredsoitdoes notneedimmensecomputingpowerandcanrunat a much higher throughputthanpermissionless blockchains.

      Are the clauses of this sentence logically connected? I think mining is how bitcoin produces a scarce commodity to which value can be assigned. But could a permissionless ledger used for other purposes not avoid mining, and thus also enjoy higher throughput? Might Sovrin's use of a permissioned ledger be motivated for other reasons, perhaps having to do with the practicalities of administering trust?

      These questions quite likely betray my weak understanding of bitcoin. But since not everybody who would benefit from Sovrin is hip-deep into bitcoin understanding, they are probably worth me asking.

    4. InSovrin,identity records liveredundantly in many places,andaccrueintransactions orchestratedby many machines.Itisprotected by strong, industry-standardcryptography andbestpractices inkey managementand cybersecurity. The resultis areliable,public sourceoftruthundernosingleentity’scontrol, robust to system failure,resilienttohacking,andhighly immunetosubversionbyhostile entities.

      It would be helpful to make an explicit comparison to DNS.

    5. In early 2016 it became clear thatahybridmodel- a“public permissioned”ledger-coulddeliver the best of both worlds;public access withtrustedgovernance

      So we need to evaluate the way in which Sovrin aims to implement trusted governance.

    6. For identities to be truly self-sovereign,this infrastructureneeds toresideinanenvironmentof diffuse trust, not belongingtoor controlledby any singleorganisationorevenasmallgroup of organisations. Nobody can“turnthelights out”.Distributedledgertechnology (DLT)is the breakthrough that makes this possible.Itenables multipleinstitutions,organisationsand governments to worktogether for thefirsttimeby formingadecentralisednetwork muchlike the Internet itself, wheredatais replicatedinmultiplelocations toberesistanttofaultsand tampering.

      Because blockchain tech is sucn an intense fad at the moment, I'm looking for evidence to ground the claim that it's central to Sovrin's aims and non gratuitous.

      This is part of it, still looking for more.

    1. A brief look back at the evolution of the consumer finance market reveals that the financial services industry has long been competitive, innovative, and resilient. Especially in the past decade, technological advances have resulted in increased efficiency and scale within the financial services industry. Innovation has brought about a multitude of new products, such as subprime loans and niche credit programs for immigrants. Such developments are representative of the market responses that have driven the financial services industry throughout the history of our country.

    2. I'm running a dev instance on a Digital Ocean droplet, using nginx to reverse-proxy localhost:8001, and with SSL turned on in nginx. The cloud hosting enables me to share the setup with others. SSL makes Canvas less grumpy when talking to the LTI app.

      If you go this route, note that Pyramid's route_url will return non-https URLs. The fix for this -- or anyway, one fix -- is not in Pyramid or the LTI app, it's the last line in this snipped from nginx.conf:

       location / {
                  proxy_pass         http://app_servers;
                  proxy_redirect     off;

    1. make

      Now on Ubuntu 16.

      Installed yarn like so:

      npm install -g yarn

      At which point make complains:

      The engine "node" is incompatible with this module. Expected version ">=4.4 <5 || >=6.3".

      The node package with Ubuntu 16 is 4.2.6, so I had to upgrade node to get make to work.

      This in turn seemed to require:

      sudo npm rebuild node-sass --force

      NPM "I sure hope you know what you're doing."

      Me "Um, not really."

      Seems to have worked.

      Now on node 6.11.1, npm 3.10.10, yarn 0.27.5

      Nope, that forced update was a bad idea. Starting from scratch after the node upgrade ... ok, that worked.

    1. You should have Node v4.x installed.

      Is this still true? On a fresh rebuild of h, client, and browser-extension it seemed that node 6.x is needed, at least by yarn for the client build.
