This poem analyzes why we read. The way Billy Collins does this is through her analysis explaining in some way's, why people write. She expresses her thoughts in stanza two where she is filling her mind with vivid imagery about another who shared their experience within a piece of literature. She views writing as a median of passing along an experience for others to understand and thus reading is an escape into another's mind.

It is so interesting to think about how many people have read from one copy of a book. So many people have held it like their own and dove into those pages and left their "footprints" in it. It is so cool and it really gives books character.
