Of interest, the power space on most of the Smith-Corona machines works exactly like this internally—they've just hidden the rectangular rubber "spatula" inside the right rear of the machine.
Like most Hermes Rocket/Baby typewriters, mine no longer had feet on the bottom. You can purchase 3D-printed feet at various places, but I went with the silicone grommet/cap route and found a perfect fit. These are rubber caps meant to replace the cushion on the bottom of certain furniture. The holes on the bottom of the typewriter are 6mm in diameter. These plugs fit tight, provide a slight lift, and a slip-free typing experience. I did have to trim off the tops a bit to fit the body back in, but that's all inside the typewriter when put together. These were a pack of ten for $6 USD (or .60 each).

Sarah treated the internal felt of her typewriter by spraying it down with white distilled vinegar. This kills any living molds, etc. Vodka is also good for removing scents on typewriters (and vintage bags).
The variable line spacer is inside the platen of a Hermes 3000.
The carriage of the H3K comes off with the removal of two bolts.
For rust removal Sarah starts with a wire brush then does PB Blaster for more.
Replace rusted springs.

The one on the cover of your book, the Hermes 3000, is that your favorite? Absolutely. It’s a rock solid portable. I have four of them. I also like the Hermes Rocket, Olympias, Olivettis. I use them constantly.

If the "Hanks Effect" was really so prominent, then we should see the commensurate rise in price of 5 Series Smith Coronas and particularly the Clipper and the Silent which he's also mentioned several times. In fact, he's said these would be the typewriter he'd keep if he had to get rid of all others. Given this fact, it has to be, in part, a variety of other factors which inflates the prices.
Personally I think that it's a combination of the fact that they were manufactured at the peak of typewriter use and manufacturing and before companies began using more plastic and cheaper manufacturing methods, but were also done in a later timeperiod when exterior design and color were on the rise as a differentiator in the marketplace. Quality, form, and function become part of a trifecta which drive desire and collectability.

He still seems iffy about the value of using WD-40 on crinkle cut finish, primarily because of the smell.
Others use brass bristle brushes for applying the WD-40 instead of nylon brushes.

A mild solvent like isopropyl alcohol can generally get the remainder of any tough spots or gummy spills.
