Carriage on a Royal KMG was grinding, so Mary disconnected the spring on the brake gear for the tabulator rack to fix the issue.
The brake gear on Royals isn't meant to be engaged during normal typing operation.

Most hobbies, sports, and areas of interest can be split into four quadrants by an individual's particular sub-interest along the lines of doing/discussing versus the activity/gear for the activity. Many people will self-select into one of the four at the expense of the other three and this can affect the type and tenor of communities around that particular activity.
Excellence in one area doesn't imply excellence in the others. "True" fanatics ought to attempt to excel in all four quadrants.
Pen + Gear Graph-Ruled Index Cards. They’re a bit on the thin side, but they take ink well, without feathering or bleeding through. And they’re printed with a very fine light-blue grid (five squares to the inch) that doesn’t get in the way of what one is writing or drawing or mapping. These cards are much better than Oxford or Staples grid cards, and a fraction of the cost of Exacompta: 48¢ for 100 cards. Highly recommended.

I find this change in car consumerism, in Britain, accurately portrays both the dangers of blindly following the crowd (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just watch for a few minutes, or until 34:05 (only 5 1/2mins), and why Polite Literature is simply a fad for a lower class to "get ahead," or gain some air or exclusivity.
