    1. Zachary Stein - "On the Ethics of Planetary Scale Measurement Meta-Structures"

"We measure what we care about and we care about what we measure."

"You could be handed a measure and start caring about something that you didn't care about before, just because you're measuring it now."

"... it's the locus of trust. It's part of the common wealth of the community is a trustworthy measure. The only way that a community can work. And then of course they encode power..."

"Measurements help certain groups understand things."

"In fact maybe we should pause and think very deeply about the whole domain of things that we shouldn't ever measure.... A meta-modern approach to measurement, respects the immeasurable and partitions off regions that are not to be measured."

"Once you start to factor all of these things (meaning, ethics, objectivity, efficiency) that's when you realize we should not measure some stuff."

"People who think about measuring new things should also think about the ontology of absence. ... Every time you measure something, think about what you left out."

"Measurement simplifies complexity by showing you "this" at the expense of "that". So the meta-modern approach is like I see this but I'm also aware of that"

"Who is measuring who? for what purpose? who is deciding what well being is?"

"Put the measurement tools into users hands. Don't come from behind the curtain and say ta-daa this is your score. Let them configure and play with the assessments themselves. This will lead to a better assessment system because a million minds are better than a hundred (or whatever your team-size is. Secondly, it empowers as opposed to just internalize."

"As much as possible empower the person who is being measured, let them see how they're being measured, and actually be able to augment the measure so it's like if you have a mirror, you want to be able to clean the mirror, adjust angles, magnify etc. you want to have that capability for them (measured ones). And then they feel like they are not a test subject, but participants"

    1. So, maybe all measurement is just training? Training that is useful until we are able to operate on that granularity of perception without formalized symbols? If so, measurement may only be valid for areas where we as organisms seem to lack skill and declare a willingness to be more skillful? Maybe even in areas like gratitude, multi-perspectival ability or joint decision making. Even though all those areas might feel too tender for deliberate currency design?

      Great perspective on measurement.

    1. You may choose to honor or glorify a player based on their performance, but we don’t allow for projects to make assumptions that could lead to negative preconceptions about a player (i.e., tilted, toxic, feeder, etc.).

I assume Riot don't want public shaming / collective bullying etc. Might hurt minors and bring flaming parents.

    1. Jordan Peterson on The Necessity of Virtue

"When you limit yourself, sometimes arbitrarily, and play the game, whole new possibilities emerge."

"Being is not possible without limitation. The price you pay for being is limitation and the price for limitation is suffering."

    1. 1. Good incentives are implicit. Reputation systems are explicit.

      Implicitness requires explicitness.

We need memory and duplication (~sharing) to progress. We can't talk about memory & duplication if a system can't be defined explicitly. Reputation systems fills this role.

    2. Reputation is a relic of centralization.

Yes, all forms of centralized power are likely to do harm at some point. (eg. 2008 Banking Crisis)

Original reputation was P2P but current structure of digital communication forced it to get centralized. We need more granular, P2P reputation systems.

    3. Good incentive systems create good behavior.Reputation systems create facades.

Reputation is the OG incentive system.

Our legacy reputation tracking capabilities haven't adapted to the age of internet, yet. I'm betting it will.

    4. By rewarding virtue explicitly, you create incentives to game the signifiers of virtue in order to exploit the system.

Reputation measures value and this argument can be applied to any system dealing with value:

We incentivize robbers by putting gold into banks. If the bank is robbed, it goes bankrupt.

    1. The association is the only party able to create (mint) and destroy (burn) Libra. Coins are only minted when authorized resellers have purchased those coins from the association with fiat assets to fully back the new coins. Coins are only burned when the authorized resellers sell Libra coin to the association in exchange for the underlying assets. Since authorized resellers will always be able to sell Libra coins to the reserve at a price equal to the value of the basket, the Libra Reserve acts as a “buyer of last resort.”

Digital native coins like Ethereum are more advantageous due their less-trust-required nature. Libra Assoc.'s biggest challenge will be to earn trust and don't lose it.

    2. The assets in the Libra Reserve will be held by a geographically distributed network of custodians with investment-grade credit rating to provide both security and decentralization of the assets.

Who are they? Worth looking into.

    3. It is backed by a reserve of assets designed to give it intrinsic value;

Libra is a basket of things which we can question their intrinsic values also. Libra will re-trigger "Intrinsic Value of MoE" discussions.

    1. Currently, when we say fractal computation, we are simulating fractals using binary operations. What if "binary" emerges on fractals? Can we find a new computation realm that can simulate binary? Can "fractal computing" be a lower level approach to our current binary understanding of computation?

    2. In 1953 I realized that the straight line leads to the downfall of mankind. But the straight line has become an absolute tyranny. The straight line is something cowardly drawn with a rule, without thought or feeling; it is the line which does not exist in nature. And that line is the rotten foundation of our doomed civilization. Even if there are places where it is recognized that this line is rapidly leading to perdition, its course continues to be plotted. ..Any design undertaken with the straight line will be stillborn. Today we are witnessing the triumph of rationalist know-how and yet, at the same time, we find ourselves confronted with emptiness. An aesthetic void, dessert of uniformity, criminal sterility, loss of creative power. Even creativity is prefabricated. We are no longer able to create. That is our real illiteracy.   Friedensreich Hundertwasser
    1. So I learned very quickly that non-dual states of awareness coincide with balanced bilateral symmetry and the ego almost always functions through some form of energetic asymmetry.

Does the writer imply that ego emerges on energetic asymmetry? I would argue that it is possible to be perfectly balanced when "ego is in".
