    1. Fake it, I scream at myself inside my head. You must remember how.Let's get this over with or you'll be here all night. Bestir yourself. Move yourflesh around, breathe audibly. It's the least you can do

She additionally feels the power dynamic here, even in a time where she is supposed to feel equally in desire -- in sex. She acts, again, performing a duty and not participating in desire

    1. y arms around him. It's only a job, he said, trying to soothe me.

Men don't understand, he is patronising her in the way that a job is not just a job but a sense of power, of individuality and a duty, which Serena Joy keeps trying to find in her knitting and in her garden.

    1. Two people convicted of running a Chinese 'maternity hotel' in Rancho Cucamonga by [[Fiona Ng]]

This was the case I had for jury duty last week. I only got to voir dire and didn't even make it into the box. Interesting to see it make the news after it was settled.

The headline is a bit off. They were convicted of fraud and money laundering. There were no charges with respect to a maternity hotel operation based on what I heard on the first day before being excused.

    1. Many of the Wives havesuch gardens, it's something for them to order and maintain and care for

The syndetic listing makes it seem like this is an impersonal law, that women need to feel a sense of duty to stay sane. However, it is all artificial because Serena Joy and other wives have no real duty, only a pretend duty.

    1. Aristotle, who had said, many centuries before in Politics (BookVIII): ‘No one would dispute the fact that it is a lawgiver’s prime duty to arrangefor the education of the young. In states where this is not done the quality of theconstitution suffers.’

Current American climate indicates that Republicans take this quote of Aristotle's to heart, but they're not closely thinking about how they define "education". They're definitely not defining it with respect to John Locke's views in Some Thoughts Concerning Education which encourages political systems that move away from an electorate that is subservient to authority.

    1. to show her what was her duty

That's an interesting way to phrase that, "what was her duty." Not "what should she do" or "what will be best for her" or "what does she want" it's telling her what her duty is, as though she doesn't have a choice at all in this. It seems at the end she sees her duty as staying where she is with the memory of her family.

    1. Say: Teach ye the Cause of God, O people of Bahá, for God hath prescribed unto every one the duty of proclaiming His Message, and regardeth it as the most meritorious of all deeds.

The discussion in book 6 after this quote explores what a duty is. It presents the idea that, like eating, laws in the Faith to pray or teach are not arbitrary rules, but statements about our nature, and conducive to our growth. This implies that they should also be sources of joy.

    1. Virtual Reality isn't anything new but its use in the law courts system isn't mainstream...yet

If I could be a juror in virtual reality, that is something I could finally get behind!

    1. The Empire does not require that its servants love each other, merely that they perform their duty.

Nationalism is a deathly effective tool for motivating and controlling an empire's officials. All sense of mercy and consideration for foreigners are replaced with frustration and paranoia due to the possibility of the aliens being enemies of the nation. Though the narrator clearly displays his reluctance of interrogating the prisoners, he knows that his duty as a government magistrate rises above all else and it is very intriguing to see his battle between his idealism and his obedient sense of duty. The struggle of many government workers has always been the decision between one's own sense of righteousness or the word of their superiors and what they decide depends on how far they've seen their peers push others in the name of the flag.

    1. Thank them for something they specifically did that was above the call of duty.

It's important to know what it takes to "exceed expectations". Does working hard and then working even harder for the same outcome go above the call of duty? Or does the outcome matter? Whatever the answer is, being specific in the thanks is important to communicate what you think the answer is.

    1. Thus, to express it morally, this is the duty to lie according to a fixed convention, to lie with the herd and in a manner binding upon everyone.

      The duty to lie.
