Handlung

RING SHOUT, by P. Djèlí Clark. (Tordotcom, $19.99.) Clark’s novella about dark forces unleashed by the early-20th-century release of D. W. Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation” is the kind of reimagining of history that puts the act of storytelling, and the art of the horror genre, at the forefront of literary and political life. “The book’s cover art says it all,” Danielle Trussoni writes in her latest horror column: “A white hood, its eyeholes ringed with teeth, stands blood-spattered as two Black hands rise in a movement that frames and threatens to unmask what is lurking beneath. … Clark’s combination of historical and political reimagining is cathartic, exhilarating and fresh.”

Plainpalais
In July 1794, Plainpalais, a neighborhood in Geneva, was the site where a group of Swiss revolted against the Genovese government with the help of the French revolutionary Robespierre, establishing a tribunal and putting on trial several high-ranking Genovese officials. Critics suggest Shelley's use of Plainpalais is an attempt to explicitly link the revolutionary events of Plainpalais with the Creature's monstrosity. See Fred V. Randel, "The Political Geography of Horror in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein," ELH Vol. 70, No. 2 (Summer, 2003): 465-491.

In recent weeks, a wave of armed assaults has spread across Djugu territory in Ituri Province in the east of this nation, emptying whole villages. While the overall death toll is uncertain, there is reason to believe it may reach into the hundreds; witnesses and activists said that 34 villages had been attacked. Since December, an estimated 150,000 people have fled their homes, according to humanitarian workers in the region.

“Some of us just like that stuff,” she said. “We like suspense, we like to be scared, we like to have visceral reaction in the theater. Maybe I’m starved for adrenaline, but for me watching a horror movie is very pleasurable. So making one was kind of a dream.”
