4. Build With Not For This simple but compelling phrase sums up our approach to building technology. The concept comes from a long history of movement work, and in the civic tech space has been popularized by Laurenellen McCann, who has written extensively on the topic. To us, the ethos of “build with note for” is a reminder that the moment we are in the mindset of building something “for” our partners rather than with them, we have failed. Going back to the theme that technology is not neutral and that our values are embedded in our work, whether it’s conscious or not, building “for” inherently conjures up a feeling of saviorism, of believing we have the answers, or believing we are here to do something for someone else. Building with means constantly checking our assumptions, being open to ideas we haven’t thought of, and, most of all, results in much better work.

10. Ally is a Verb Solidarity is an ongoing process, and ally is a verb. Showing up in a good way is something we continually practice, not a destination where we arrive. This is not our unique insight - the concept of ally being a verb, not a noun, has a long history in social justice spaces, and it’s one worth highlighting. When we think of ourselves as “allies” (nouns) we can get complacent by thinking we have arrived, or we can get fragile when we make mistakes that make us question our status as “allies.” When instead we see ourselves as practicing allyship with frontline communities, then we recognize that our goal is to continually listen, learn from and take action in solidarity with our partners.

Decolonize Mapmaking Our work on local first tools is deeply influenced by indigenous-led movements to decolonize mapping, with the explicit goals of making maps that increase indigenous sovereignty & land rights. From participatory mapping, collective mapping, counter-mapping and MappingBack, there are inspiring examples from around the planet of how indigenous peoples & other local communities are reclaiming mapmaking in order to assert sovereignty over their traditional territories. Such decolonized mapping processes enable communities to communicate their worldviews, values and relationships with territory to outside audiences. They disrupt existing norms and assumed practices of European cartography, including whether rivers should always be blue, which direction maps are oriented, and even what constitutes a map. From our projects supporting indigenous-led mapping, we’ve been inspired by the ways that indigenous people are making their own maps to assert their rights, and the ways that they are decolonizing mapmaking in the process.

Hitzer: Die Gefahr ist in jedem Fall da. Die amerikanische Intellektuelle Barbara Ehrenreich, wie Susan Sontag eine ehemalige Brustkrebspatientin, hat darüber ein ausgesprochen nachdenkenswertes Buch mit dem bezeichnenden Titel "Smile or Die" geschrieben.

Setz dir deine Deadlines nicht extra früh, sondern extra spät. So dass du sie wirklich nicht mehr nach hinten verschieben kannst. Denn nur das Wissen, überhaupt keinen Spielraum mehr zu haben, verschafft dir genug Druck, eine Aufgabe dann auch wirklich zu erledigen.

Diese Exekutivfunktionen werden aber unter Stress bzw. negativer Voraktivierung nun gerade wie ein Bildschirmschoner “abgeschaltet”.

Weil sie eben missachten bzw. überhaupt nicht verstehen, dass Prokrastination eben nichts mit dem eigenen Willen zu tun hat, sondern mit der eigenen Emotion. Und eben nicht eine Frage des Umgangs mit der Zeit ist, sondern mit der emotionale Wahrnehmung von Zeit bzw. der Zeitblindheit für die Zukunft.

Im Ernst: Ich glaube nicht, dass es viel gibt, was man tun kann. Außer, wirtschaftlich mit Energie umzugehen, das ist das Vernünftige. Es gibt keinen guten Grund, in einem schlecht isolierten Haus zu leben und Energie für die Heizung zu verschwenden.

Wenn Organismen in einer bestimmten Region unter Stress geraten, sind die Überlebenden die, die die Region verlassen. Die zurückbleiben und auf bessere Zeiten warten, gehen häufiger zugrunde.

Forming a common pattern language for conveying the structures and mechanisms of our architectures allows us to intelligibly reason about them. The primary focus is not so much on technology as it is on creating a culture to document and support sound engineering architecture and design.

Sind wir 2059 alle Protestanten, die ihr Begehren im Zaum halten und Verzicht üben?Diese Aversion gegen Verzicht und Verbot ist Teil unserer Wachstumssubjektivität.Muss denn verzichtet werden? Das Begehren kann doch weiter nach vorne, nach oben gerichtet sein: Fortschritt muss doch nicht automatisch mit einem „mehr“ an Wachstum einhergehen.Ich glaube, es gibt eine enge Kopplung von „vorne“ und „mehr“, Fortschritt und Wachstum. Unsere persönliche Entwicklung nennen wir „Wachstum“! Wir „wachsen“ mit unseren Herausforderungen. Das steckt tief in uns, quasi in den Kinderschuhen. Man muss das Register aber wechseln, es braucht eine radikale Verschiebung der Vorstellungswelt, damit man sich ein Voranschreiten ohne Wachstum vorstellen kann.Mag sein, aber ich will nicht verzichten.Ich kann mich davon auch nicht freisprechen. Ich will auch nicht verzichten. Deshalb sind wir ja alle geneigt zu sagen: Ach, es geht doch gar nicht um Verzicht beim Postwachstum, sondern nur um ein Umdenken, um ein anderes Bild vom guten Leben. Nun ja. Im Nachhinein werden wir das vielleicht so sehen können. Aber jetzt, heute, ist es halt doch genau das: Verzicht! Da gibt’s kein Herumreden.

Ähm, haben wir nicht eine Krisenerfahrung vergessen? Beide haben wir gesagt: Na klar, der erste Bruch kam 2007 mit der Finanzkrise ... Die Vorstellung einer durchgehenden Subjektivität vom Zweiten Weltkrieg bis heute, ist das nicht eine westdeutsche Erzählung?Ich glaube, auch in der DDR gab es einen großen Wunsch, mitgetragen zu werden von einer Wachstumsbewegung. Mit allem, was dazu gehört – der Wunsch nach Konsum. Kauf dich frei!Die Demonstrantinnen hatten 1989 teils andere Vorstellungen ...Okay, abgesehen einem kleinen, dissidenten Milieu vielleicht. Durchbrochen wird dieser Wunsch dann von einer wahnsinnigen, biografischen Verlusterfahrung. Die Orientierung auf die Wachstumssubjektivität war nach diesem Bruch umso größer.

Ein unverzichtbarer Teil der Öffentlichkeit befindet sich damit de facto in privatwirtschaftlicher Hand.

Do the technical administrators have to be the same people doing the social organizing? I think the answer as of June 2019 is, sadly, yes. If you have 2 people with root access to the server and 2 people managing the community aspects, you'll end up with imbalances in that group of 4. You will end up with technical administrators who feel like code monkeys who never get the gratitude that the community organizers get, or you'll end up with community organizers who feel like glorified babysitters while the techies have all the real power. You might even end up with a situation where both are true. I think that if you're dedicated to this sort of project though, you could start with something like that 2 and 2, and then the techies could teach the organizers the technical skills, and the organizers could teach the techies the organizing skills.
