I wonder if there is any larger application of this. For things like missing person cases, etc, if we sent information out to go viral, could these cold cases get solved? In this case, it seemed to do a world of work. Collectivley, we all have so much experience and knowledge, so we could put it together to do a good amount of work. However, the downside of this comes wit the fact that trolls might ruin this. You might depend on an educated group to track something or someone down and then it turns out that this "group" has just been trolling you with the wrong locations the whole time- which depending on the circumstance could be very awful to go with. It also brings up privacy concerns, where someone could post something for mallicious reasons for location of something/someone and they find it due to the internet.
BBC. Reddit apologises for online Boston 'witch hunt'. BBC News, April 2013. URL: https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-22263020 (visited on 2023-12-08).
After the Boston got bombed in 2013, Reddit created a thread where users could investigate who the attackers were. However, they kept accusing several innocent people, including a teenager and a college student named Sunil Tripathi. This caused big problems for the families of those accused, one of those was Tripathi's family receiving so many hateful messages that they had to shut down their Facebook page. Reddit officially apologized, admitting that even though Reddit users truly wanted to find the attackers, they spreaded some rumors that hurted the innocent. This event became an important reminder of how powerful yet dangerous social media can be, especially when people share unproven information during a crisis.

I find it interesting how we use the terms power users and lurkers for crowdsourcing sectors specfically. When raising money, you would think that you would not want to tag any donor, of any kind, of any donation, with any negative label. The term lurker makes it seem like a negative term to the person who is a lurker- like someone who didn't do all that they could to support. Meanwhile power users have that positive connotation, which makes sense, but its the dicotomy between the two labels that I find interesting. Not all donors are equal, but any donor is surely one you would want to tag with a good label? I understand for social media posts etc, this concept changes, but for crowdsourcing specifically I find this interesting.
When looking at who contributes in crowdsourcing systems, or with social media in generally, we almost always find that we can split the users into a small group of power users who do the majority of the contributions, and a very large group of lurkers who contribute little to nothing.
Honestly, it is wild to see almost everything we read or watch online is made by just a very small number of people while the rest just scroll past. For me, I view this as the same way humans have always done things, from ancient craftsmen making tools to a few dedicated individuals writing evrything on Wikipedia. At the end of the day, digital spaces haven't really changed our behavior; instead, they have just upgraded our old social habits to fit modern life.
Blood of the Vine Tavern
PC INFO:Sparse light comes to the street form the houses you pass on the way up to the Inn. Shutters appear closed and many, you suspect are bared. Occasional dour and pale faces pear out at you as you pass but disappear if you turn towards them. Ahead across the square a braizier burns weakly trying to light the heavy fog around it.<br /> Above the gaping doorway, a sign hangs precariously askew, proclaiming this to be the Blood on the Vine tavern.

A practice that could be improved is the video or animation accessibility. The homepage includes lots of autoplay videos or moving animations, these could distract users or create accessibility issues for people with attention disorders or motion sensitivity. Adding pause controls would improve accessibility.

Color contrast could be improved ("type something..."). Some light-colored text placed over image backgrounds may be difficult for visually impaired users to read. Higher contrast between text and background would improve readability and accessibility.
In 2018, the company pledged robust World Without Waste goals to collect and recycle the equivalent of a bottle or can for every one the company sells by 2030, to make 100% of packaging recyclable by 2025 and to use 50% recycled material in bottles and cans by 2030. By introducing 100% rPET bottles* in the United States, this marks a total of 19 markets globally offering recycled packaging.
This statement highlights Coca-Cola’s sustainability goals and long-term commitments toward environmental responsibility. However, it mainly focuses on future targets rather than providing detailed evidence of current achievements and progress. The use of ambitious goals may create a highly positive image of the company while offering limited information about present outcomes. Greater transparency and measurable results would strengthen the credibility of these claims.
We seek to positively impact people’s lives, communities and the planet through water replenishment, packaging recycling, sustainable sourcing practices and carbon emissions reductions across our value chain. Together with our bottling partners, we employ more than 700,000 people, helping bring economic opportunity to local communities worldwide.
The statement uses positive and persuasive language to promote the company’s sustainability efforts. However, it provides limited specific evidence or measurable results to support these claims. By focusing mainly on achievements, it may overlook broader environmental issues related to the company’s operations. This can create concerns about transparency and possible greenwashing.
Accessories
The “Accessories” category clearly separates hardware products from games and news content. This organization makes browsing easier and improves the overall user experience. News — Good Accessibility Practice
News
The “News” section is easy to identify in the top navigation bar and allows users to quickly access updates and announcements. Clear headings and consistent menu formatting improve readability and accessibility.
PS4
The PS4 area has the same style and space between it as the rest of the menu items. This gives you an understanding of how the site is organized and allows it to be more user friendly through a recognizable layout.
PS5
The “PS5” category is clearly labeled in the navigation menu, making it easy for users to quickly access PlayStation 5 content. The simple wording and organized placement improve website navigation.
Search
The search bar in the top-right corner allows users to quickly find specific content. This improves accessibility by helping users navigate large amounts of information more efficiently.
The headline price is what companies pay the Alberta government to reach compliance. The money goes into a general fund to invest in emissions reduction technology.Friday's agreement also sees Alberta commit to a minimum floor price for those credits beginning in 2030.
the colour contrast between the text and the images is very good, making the content factual because theres proof.
Stop rewarding bad behaviour': B.C. premierWhile a potential route for a pipeline hasn't been finalized, it would have to go through British Columbia to reach tidewater on the West Coast.B.C. Premier David Eby, who has been a vocal opponent of a new pipeline to the coast, said the federal government is "rewarding bad behaviour" in light of a potential secessionist referendum brewing in Alberta."It cannot be the case that the projects that get prioritized in Canada are those where a premier threatens to leave the country," Eby said in a statement.Smith said Friday that she "supports sovereignty within a united Canada," adding that Friday's agreement is an indication that "the country can work better."WATCH | 'Aggressive timelines' show investors that Alberta and Canada are serious about a pipeline:
the layout of the homepage is simple and organized, which helps users locate news and important information.
Friday's agreement also sees Alberta commit to a minimum floor price for those credits beginning in 2030.The agreement appears to put Alberta's target below the national carbon price that is supposed to apply to all provinces and territories. The headline price was supposed to rise to $170 per tonne by 2030.During her news conference after the signing ceremony, Smith said the agreement on the carbon price means the industry will save "billions" in compliance costs. But she also characterized the agreement as "a pretty big concession" on Alberta's part."'If I had my druthers on what it would be set at, it would probably be somewhere around $50 a tonne," she told reporters."But those are the things we have to negotiate."
One thing that could still be improved is making sure every image has descriptive alt text for users to find information quickly.
Carbon price to riseAs CBC News and others reported earlier this week, the agreement also sets out a plan to increase the effective industrial carbon emissions price in Alberta to $130 per tonne by 2040, and the headline price to $140 by that time.Last year, Alberta froze its industrial carbon emission price at $95 per tonne. The difference between the effective carbon price and the headline price is the way in which companies accumulate credits to comply with their emission limits. The effective carbon price — the market price — is the price at which credits are bought and sold on the open market.
the text is large and readable in most areas, which helps improve accessibility for users with visual difficulties.
this home page uses clear headings and sections, which makes it easier for users to scan through information and navigate the page.
World
Clearly distinguished from all other categories, the "World" section is easy to locate on the nav bar and assists the user with orienting themselves on the site. The article titles and the teasers allow users to scan.
Climate
The "Climate" category has been implemented to the primary navigation and has uniform design and spacing. An easy to use design that also simplifies navigation for the user.
Local
On the very top of the CBC News homepage is a navigation bar, within which lies a section with clear label "Local". White font with red background is easy for eyes to read, user can quickly find out the information about local events and news.
Jobs Find a job, training, hiring programs, work permits, Social Insurance Number (SIN)
This is a poorer example of an accessibility technique, since the single line contains numerous issues that are distinct from each other. The issues of employment, training, hiring, permits, and the number of Social Insurance are connected but separate tasks. The combination of several items in the single description makes the information more difficult for a user to process if the individual is under pressure, not well versed in government services, or using a screen reader.
Main Menu
This is not a great accessibility choice since the term “MENU” is highly generic in that it does not provide any details on what the button contains. It will be hard for some people to determine if it provides information about the services offered by the agency, its various departments, account management, or navigation categories.
Jobs
This makes for a good accessibility practice since the category label used is concise, clear, and straightforward. The page avoids using jargon that can be hard to understand; rather, it opts for an understandable word that lets the user know what kind of content he or she can expect in that category.
Most requested
It is an effective accessibility technique in that it positions the most commonly used services closer to the beginning of the page. Users will not have to scour the entire site to find what they need. It is beneficial especially for individuals who may be under pressure and less focused.
Canada.ca The official website of the Government of Canada
This is a useful accessibility practice, since the web page has a straightforward and clear title. Readers do not need to browse through the page in order to understand the purpose of the web page; it is very clear from the outset. An explicit page title also guides blind users to know their location within the page.

Residents attending events with loose compost must bring their own bag or container to pick up the compost. Loose compost is limited to one cubic metre (approximately one car trunkful) per vehicle. Where our compost comes from The compost is created from the yard waste and organic materials collected at the curb throughout Toronto. Various Ontario processors receive both of these materials and blend them with organic materials of different types and sources, producing optimum conditions for composting. The process uses naturally occurring micro-organisms to convert materials that were once considered waste, into an excellent source of plant nutrients for gardens and lawns. Before leaving the facilities, the compost is tested to ensure quality and provincial requirements for safety. For more information, read the What Happens to Organics page. How to use compost Compost acts as an excellent soil amendment and is safe to use in gardens and on lawns, however, plants should not be placed in pure compost just as they should not be placed in pure fertilizer. One part compost should be mixed with six parts soil. The colour contrast between text and background is good, making the content easier to read for users with visual impairments.
The good: The city of Toronto website has a translate feature that helps people who may not speak English access important information. This helps accessibility by making city resources more inclusive for people from different background languages.
2-Many sections on this website uses bullet points and short headings instead of large blocks of texts which is good for people who can not read large paragraphs. This also helps the information easier and help people with learning disabilities. It is a good tool to have.
3- The website has a layout across different pages, which helps people know where to find menus, services, and contact information. This helps base it helps the browser look less confusing for people using technology.
4- The bad thing about this website is that the homepage changes between multiple large images and announcements, which can be distracting for people with attention difficulties. Many content all at once can make it harder for people to focus on the important information. This can be bad for people with ADHD.
5- The last bad one: Some of the announcements use images to communicate information, which can not be good for people who depend on readings. If images are unclear it can be hard for people with disability to fully understand what is happening in the website.
These are all of the good and bad ones :) .

Inclusion of Alternative Text: The images and icons used in the category navigation include alternative text that describes the purpose of each link. This supports the WCAG 2.1 Perceivable principle by ensuring that users who rely on screen readers can understand the function of visual elements, not just their appearance.
Image-Based Promotional Content and Missing Alt Text: Several promotional banners on the homepage contain important marketing information embedded directly within images. For example, a “Barrel Jeans” promotional banner includes sale messaging visually displayed on the image, but the alt text only describes “Women’s Jeans.” As a result, screen reader users do not receive the full promotional message, including limited-time offers and product-specific details. This violates WCAG 2.1 Perceivable requirements, as essential information is not fully conveyed in an accessible text alternative.
High Colour Contrast: The homepage uses strong colour contrast between text and background (e.g., black or bright red text on white backgrounds), which improves readability. This supports the WCAG 2.1 Perceivable principle, specifically the requirement for sufficient contrast between foreground and background content. High contrast helps users with low vision, colour vision deficiencies, or those viewing the site in bright lighting conditions to more easily read and interpret information.
womenmenkidsbaby
Keyboard Accessibility and Hover Interaction: The homepage navigation relies on hover interactions to reveal drop-down menus for key categories such as Women, Men, Kids, and Baby. While hover functionality alone can present accessibility barriers, keyboard testing indicates partial compliance, as arrow keys allow movement across primary menu items and the Tab key enables access to submenu links. This suggests the navigation is operable without a mouse; however, the dual interaction model may reduce usability and discoverability for keyboard-only users, particularly if interaction patterns are not clearly signposted. The variety of categories also makes it more tedious to use the keyboard to select categories further down the drop-down menu.
EnglishFrançais
Language Selection and Discoverability: The homepage includes an English/French language toggle located in the footer, allowing users to switch between languages. This supports WCAG 2.1 Understandable principles by providing content in multiple languages for users with different language preferences. However, placing the language selector only in the footer reduces its discoverability, as users must scroll to the bottom of the page before accessing it. This may limit usability for first-time visitors or users who expect language options in the header.
Learning Management Systems
Each section of the website has been divided into subcategories. Although some of these divisions may not be particularly reasonable, and the subcategories are not clearly guided. However, the arrangement and guidance of the color blocks, including the contrast between the white background and the blue text, enables people to still read this interface relatively easily.

Clicking here will bring up a new pop-up window. However, sometimes the pop-up window does not appear above the browser. If you don't look at the second window in the computer taskbar, sometimes you may not even be aware that a new pop-up window has appeared. However, this part is very prominent and can be easily noticed right from the first glance when entering the website.
Announcements
This announcement area was quite prominent during the "course intention" period. At least every time you visit the school's official website, the words "course intention" will be enlarged and highlighted. However, the problem is that most of the time when using the school website, the purpose is to access D2L, but the announcement area is too far away from the D2L link. For non-native English speakers, sometimes it is difficult to notice immediately.

What’s Happening at HSOMH
All the photos do not have alt text. This can make it hard for those with screen readers to know what is displayed on screen. To fix this, the website simply needs to add alt text to describe images on screen.
lost pets reunited with their families
Without a solid background, this can be hard to read for those with impaired Vision and screen readers. To fix this the website should make the background behind the text a solid colour to be easier to read.
Menu
A critique I have regarding the menu button is that it fails in the perceivable section of the POUR principles. It is tucked away in the top left corner which may be harder for those with visual disabilities or cognitive issues and lacks in differentiability from the rest of the page. It is written in the same grey-black font instead of a larger font or a colour like blue which is easier to differentiate for almost all forms of colour-blindness.
Explore all of CBC
The Pour principle of operability can be applied here as instead of forcing the user to go on the menu section to facilitate through the different news topics, they are big and more eye catching from here. It gives users the time to read the content rather than forcing them under a time constraint to pick what they want to read or listen to.
AccessibilityIt is a priority for CBC to create products that are accessible to all in Canada including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive challenges.Closed Captioning and Described Video is available for many CBC shows offered on CBC Gem.About CBC AccessibilityAccessibility Feedback
Pining on the Robust principle of POUR, there is a clear heading that displays the CBC company had accessibility in mind along with paying attention to issues those with disabilities may have when navigating the website. There is assistive technologies like Closed Captions, audio readings of stories, and a fair amount of room for clicking on each news story so that there is no struggle for those with motor or cognitive challenges
CBC's search bar includes a clear, visible label making it immediately obvious what the field is for. This supports the Understandable principle of POUR - form elements should have descriptive labels so that screen reader users and those with cognitive disabilities can interact with them confidently, without having to guess the purpose of the input field.
Latest News
The Latest news heading is at the top of the website, making it easy to locate and in a red font that makes it easier to distinguish from the background, bringing it into foreground. The stories uploaded to CBC are also accessible to those with visual impairments, allowing them to listen to the story rather negating them from the right to inform themselves of the news.
Shorts
The Shorts heading is big enough and in a bolded font to make locating and accessibility easier. Like Rogan's video mentions, the website is not very simple to navigate. In this specific section, there is a lot of different subtopics to shorts and thumbnails with headings in smaller fonts making it easier to mix up with advertisements and overstimulating to navigate.

CBC uses a clear heading hierarchy (H1, H2 etc.) throughout its articles, which is a strong accessibility practice. Screen readers use heading structure to help users navigate a page efficiently, supporting the Perceivable and Operable principles of POUR. This allows users to jump between sections without reading every line.

Accessibility Practice: Needs improvement. I noticed that the homepage relies heavily on images to communicate their sales and promotions. If these images don't contain descriptive alt text, the screen reader users who are blind or visually impaired may miss the important deals and information. Furthermore, the Robust and Perceivable aspects of accessibility would be improved with the addition of detailed alt text.

Accessibility Practice: Good Practice. This menu highlights the Understandable principle since the categories are located at the beginning of the website and they are clearly organized. The consistent navigation helps users with cognitive disabilities, as well as, it improves screen reader navigation by creating a logical page structure. This makes them easier to click for users that may have motor impairments or other limited hand precision, further improving the website's overall navigation. Thus, "Shop Now" are large clickable buttons, making them support the Operable principle.

Accessibility Practice: Good practice. The Staples website homepage is perceivable due to the strong colour contrast. Photos of the Week
This web page contains a lot of images--mainly because it's a destination service site for many locals and tourists--however, with this section particularly, it displays photos of the week from the site's Instagram. Some of the photos displayed are featured as a carousel, which is accessible by keyboard. However if a visually impaired or invisibly disabled individual were to browse through these photos, it may be overstimulating for them, even if the screen reader were to describe all the content based on the alternate (alt) texts or operate the controls when moving between photos.

Learn more
This "Learn more" hyperlink is beneficial for screen reader users as it allows them to go explore content on another web page. However, if a screen reader were to read all the hyperlinks on this page separately, the user may get confused since there are two links labelled "Learn more" adjacent to each other. Therefore, having a meaningful, unique link text is important so that if it is read out of context, the message will still get across. Perhaps, if one were to make changes on this site, adding the hyperlink on the subheading would be better.
Get Tickets
The "Get Tickets" button is not only highlighted in a bright, red colour, but is also labelled, allowing visually impaired and invisibly disabled users navigate the website better. This aligns with the POUR principles by the W3C Working Group as the button is perceivable and operable. If someone were to use a screen reader or simply use a keyboard to buy tickets, they can easily do so since the button is at the top of the web page. Furthermore, the colour of the text is contrasted well and legible compared to the red button, increasing accessibility.

This language drop down button featuring English and French allows users to switch between languages they're comfortable reading with. This aligns with the understandable principle of POUR since it allows users to access information on this web page in their preferred language. The language drop down interface is also distinguished with a down arrow icon, making it easy for users to interact with and operable (another principle of POUR).
Is that CBC story or ad on social media real?We will never encourage you to invest in a product, service, or fund Find out more
This link uses non-descriptive anchor text ('find out more'), which is a known accessibility failure. Screen reader users often navigate a page by cycling through links in isolation - a link that says 'find out more' gives no context about its destination, violating the Perceivable and Understandable principles.
AirPods Pro 3 and the environment.
Use of colour: The environmental statistics use colour to emphasize numbers and key points. Using colour cues to convey meaning can affect accessibility for users who are colour blind. This connects to the Perceivable principle because information shouldn’t only depend on visual colour elements for communication purposes, as this would not accommodate all audiences.
Compare all AirPods models
Links/buttons description: The links and navigation buttons are unambiguous. For example, here instead of using generic text such as "click here", the link is clearly labelled (“compare the models”), so the user knows exactly where it leads to. This applies the Understandable principle because the navigation becomes more predictable and doesn’t need further context. This is also helpful for screen readers mentioned in one of the module videos, as visually impaired users can navigate the website better through descriptive labels.
Why Apple is the bestplace to buy AirPods.
Expandable Information boxes for processing: The “+” symbols that allow users to expand sections under this topic help organize information into smaller pieces instead of having large walls of text that may cause cognitive overload. This applies the Understandable principle by allowing information to be easier to process. However, collapsible elements should still be accessible to keyboard only users. Additionally, the interactive hover effect on these boxes could be a minor issue for users who can’t use a mouse. This relates to the Operable principle which states that individuals with motor impairments or who rely on keyboards only for navigation should still be able to access all website functionality. In this case, however, the hover interaction serves more as a visual enhancement feature instead of a primary navigation feature.
Find My with Precision Finding.
Layout and contrast design for readability: There is clear contrast between the foreground text and background, making the information readable for users with vision problems or colour blindness. This applies the Perceivable principle because the content can be distinguished visually and read more easily. The balance between text and visuals also makes the page not feel cluttered.
Active Hearing Protection for safer listening.
Big headings/subheading and structured sections for navigation: The size of the headings are appropriate and are used to divide sections, making navigation accessible and reducing mental clutter. Users can quickly and easily locate relevant information without browsing through dense paragraphs. This highlights the Understandable principle because users don’t have to segregate information themselves, which would cause confusion and cognitive overload. For dyslexic users or those with ADHD, headings that stand out and section segregation makes information a lot easier to process.
Watch the film
Audio descriptions inclusion: Including English audio descriptions as an option in the linked video is an important accessibility feature because it verbally explains visual actions happening on screen through audio narration for users who are blind or have a visual impairment. For example, one of the visuals is explicitly described in detail as “the word hola enters the airpods and emerges as hello” to demonstrate the live translation feature. This connects to the Perceivable principle because information is made available in different sensory formats instead of being communicated solely through visuals, which wouldn’t be accessible to all audiences.

Beowulf’s masculinity is typical for most classical epic literature, he is strong and brave and a fighter before anything else. He is a typical brute-like heroic protagonist. While the modern hero breaks away from this stereotype, what they retain from Beowulf is supernatural powers. Beowulf has superhuman strength and unparalleled endurance, the basis of most modern heroes. While modern heroes add onto strength and endurance, even the simplest heroes will still possess a basis of superhuman strength. Often considered the first superhero, Superman, has superhuman strength, endurance, along with speed and invulnerability. Originally, he had a more grounded power set like classic heroes, he could not yet fly nor shoot lasers from his eyes nor did he have x-ray vision. In his debut he leapt instead of flying. It is clear to see how characters like Beowulf would later become inspiration for the superheroes we love today.
Something that has shifted from old heroism is how said hero gains their superhuman abilities. In many old epics, it's based in religion as stories were a way to enforce religious beliefs and religion was a vital part of society. As artists and society as a whole put less emphasis on religion, it no longer became the origin of our heroes' powers, instead it shifted to science. Superman never got his powers from God, but he got them from the sun. This makes since for the first of his kind, it's a mix of both sci-fi and religion in a wat. The sky, with an importance placed on the big yellow ball of gas, has been where the Gods have lived in most major religions. The Greek pantheon in Olympus, the Norse pantheon in Asgard, and the Abrahamic God in Heaven. When we get into the Silver Age of comics (1956-1970), new superheroes of the time are complete sci-fi based such as the X-men who gain their powers from a genetic mutation, Daredevil who is blinded and empowered by a chemical accident from Marvel, and the Flash, from DC, who gains the ability of super speed from a lad accident gone wrong. As religion became separated from daily life, so too did it separate from our heroes.

Facebook's interface can be quite overwhelming and constantly changing, making it difficult for those with disabilities to use. The News Feed is built around infinite scrolling, meaning that there is no finite end or beginning to it, which can be cognitively overwhelming as endless posts, ads, and suggested content are constantly presented to the user. This can make it challenging for users, particularly those with ADHD, autism or cognitive processing issues, to concentrate on any particular piece of information or to easily find important posts.
In terms of accessibility, this design affects the principles of “Understandable” and “Operable” since there is not always a predictable way of navigating and content priority is not based on a stable structure, but on algorithms. Facebook provides some accessibility elements such as alt text for images and screen reader compatibility, but the site's overall complexity can make it difficult for some people to use effectively.
STORE
Despite the mixed signs in accessibility, Steam is a website that has a very dense user interface design, particularly at the storefront and library pages. The home page can be cluttered with many rows of game suggestions, sales banners and various parts of content that might overwhelm the visitors. This can cause users to suffer from cognitive overload, especially those with attention or learning disorders, and make it difficult to concentrate on specific information or navigate efficiently.
It also uses a lot of visual grouping and scrolling through a lot of content, causing some users to lose clarity, when compared to simpler, more structured page designs. In terms of accessibility, this can affect the “Understandable” principle as the information architecture is not always intuitive or predictable.

The images on Apple's website show good accessibility design, with a clear hierarchy in the visual layout and a high level of contrast between the text and background. Large fonts, ample space and minimal clutter reduce potential cognitive overload and allow users to focus on key information. This aligns with the “Understandable” guideline of web access and shows content in a neat and straight-to-the-point format that's simple to navigate.
Apple tends to be relatively consistent throughout its site, making it easier for screen reader users and folks with cognitive disabilities to navigate. The simple structure and logical organization of sections make it easier to navigate both visually and with assistive technologies, supporting the “Operable” and “Robust” principles of accessible web design.

Crunchyroll is good with its color contrast and dark mode design, which are methods of good accessibility. Menus and subtitles stand out against the dark background and navigation features are clearly visible, which can help users read them better, particularly in dim lighting conditions. The contrast between the foreground and background content benefits users with poor vision and enhances the readability of the material. This fits with the “Perceivable” guideline of web accessibility which focuses on making content more easily discernible and understandable to the user visually. Crunchroll also has customizable captions and screen reader compatibility, enhancing accessibility for a wider range of users.

This page contains too much visual information that may be distracting for visitors to the page.
Drinking vessel in the shape of a fist
This piece, a drinking vessel in the shape of a fist, is a clear example of how masculinity was viewed in the ancient near east. It is sculped in a way that shows extraordinary physical strength with rough, detailed knuckles, insinuating to violence. The size of the hand further captures the masculine figure. The imagine on the cuff of the hand depicts the "Great King Tudhaliya" as he pours a ritual liquid in front of an alter for the storm god, with five of his followers witnessing, some of whom are playing instruments. Since the carving represents a king, the strength shown is now from a common man who gained his physique through physical labor but a trained noble or king who's strength would be used for battle and power rather than agriculture. It shows what these societies expected from their leaders -- from them to be hypermasculine powerful men who help strength for violence and defense. This also compares to our current expectations for leaders, it's traditionally standard for a man to be head of a household and for men to practice sternness, be athletic, and to control in some way. Men, historically, held almost every position of power within the US government and abled bodied people are valued more than than those with disabilities.
This strength of ordinary men is something that is rarely reflected in modern heroism. After the Silver Age of comics (1956-1970), sci-fi explanation for powers and enhanced individuals became the norm. There were no more superheroes that were more hero than super. Although, some break out of this norm, the most famous example being Batman. While one might think that he may possess powers, he does not. He regularly goes head to head with aliens superpowered by the sun or chemically altered villains while having no enhancements himself. He survives off his resources and mind alone on the battlefield.
Although the ordinary man is less likely to be regarded as a superhero, modern heroes are certainly more diverse with many of them, particularly from Marvel, being disabled. Daredevil, Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, and Professor X are all famous Marvel superheroes who are disabled who have also received numerous adaptations, being blind, an amputee, deaf, and paralyzed respectively . Women are also more present in the hero role in the modern day. Wonder Woman, from DC, is one of the most famous superheroes in general, not just out of woman superheroes, a character who regularly out-strengths her male counterparts.

What is the best way to fix Figure 2.2 cited since there is a ALT Text flag.

The Ramayana
One of the most important parts to Sita's story in the Ramayana is that Sita is kidnapped by Ravana and when Rama rescues her she must prove herself to still be pure via trial of fire. It's insinuated that Ravana has raped Sita and now she is sexually sullied. Despite the nonconsensual nature Rama still accuses Sita of being dirty, refusing to comfort her after a traumatic event. With the modern hero, this idea is not completely discarded. Jessica Jones, one of the more prominent woman heroes of modern comics, has a similar traumatic history to Sita. She was kidnapped under mind control and forced to do sexual as well as violent acts for a man named Zebediah Killgrave or Purple Man due to his purple skin. In the 2019 comic. Jessica Jones: Purple Daughter by Kelley Thompson, Jones is accused of cheating on her husband, Luke Cage, when their daughter's skin turns purple. Despite Jones' trauma, Cage fails to support her in the ways that she needs from her partner just as Rama had failed Sita. Cage does eventually come to be a supporting figure, more so scared for his family than forcing his wife to walk through fire. Still, the theme of women being victim blamed for assault persists with the modern hero, speaking to a larger societal issue of how women are treated and how toxic forms of masculinity can influence ones actions.

NOBLEMAN
Draupadi's representation of masculinity continues with physical strength, with violence through display of competent weapon use. Their violence is used to win over women, as if their objects, just as it's used to win wars. Violence ties in to how men have been expected to be superior, to be demanding as violence is used to protect that power. With the modern superhero, weapons are often numerous, although, with modern standards of the hero those with lethal weapons are regarded as anti-heroes. The heroes of the modern age have morals against killing, compassion now being valued along with strength. Even with superheroes who maintain a dark demeanor, stoic and emotionless, such as Daredevil and Batman can maintain non-lethality making them dynamic characters in the eyes of masculinity. Despite their masculinity, they do not kill, they care for others. and they give hope while also being powerful both in status and physical strength.
Women, nonparticipants in masculinity, are just as important to the modern hero as they were to the ancient, and often in the same manner. They are used as motivation for the masculine protagonist, just as Draupadi is used here to make the Five Pandavas show off their masculinity. Daredevil has had a plethora of love interests, but they differ from this damsel in distress stereotype as they are all women with enough power to protect themselves. Karen Page is a journalist who often takes on controversial stories that land her in trouble and Elektra Natchios went through the same combat training as the man himself as well as having more social status and wealth than him. This has in no way been the standard for modern hero's love interests but it certainly shows a change in how women are viewed. One of the most famous examples of how woman can be used to boaster the performance of heroic men is in Green Lantern #54 (1994) where the hero protagonist find his love interest, Alexandra DeWitt, murdered and stuffed in a fridge. This plotline is used simply for the hero to be called into action against the villain who committed such a heinous act. From this came the term "women in refrigerators", a phenomenon where women are disproportionately made to be the victims of violence in media, often for the sake of giving the male protagonist as call to action.

Bad practice. The large banner images on TMU's homepage do not have descriptive alt text that conveys the meaning or context of the image to a screen reader user. This violates the Perceivable principle from WCAG's POUR guidelines, which requires that all non-text content has a text alternative. Screen readers rely on alt tags to describe images to users who are blind or visually impaired. When alt text is missing or just contains a file name, those users get no information about what the image is communicating. For a university that publishes its own web accessibility guidelines, this is a notable gap.
Good practice. The "Future Students" panel on TMU's homepage uses clear, descriptive labels: Undergraduate, Graduate, International, and Continuing Education. Rather than vague terms like "click here" or "learn more", each option tells the user exactly where they are going before they click. This supports the Understandable principle from WCAG's POUR guidelines. Descriptive labels are especially important for screen reader users who often navigate by jumping between links, and need each link to make sense on its own out of context. Vague link text is one of the most common and frustrating accessibility failures on institutional websites.

Good practice. TMU's homepage uses clear contrast between text and background colors, following the Perceivable principle from WCAG's POUR guidelines. Sufficient color contrast is essential for users who are colorblind or have low vision, as poor contrast can make text completely unreadable for roughly 4% of the population. The course material notes that color alone should never be the only means of conveying information, and TMU's design reflects this by pairing contrast with clear typography and layout structure.
Discover what it means to be metropolitan
Good practice. TMU's responsive template uses properly nested heading structure, with the heading in the banner region and subsequent headings organized hierarchically. This supports the Understandable principle, making it easier for screen readers to parse the page in a logical linear fashion, which is essential for users who are blind or visually impaired.

Good practice. TMU includes a jump to main Content link at the top of every page, accessible by pressing Tab. This is a great example of the Operable principle from WCAG's POUR guidelines, allowing keyboard-only users and screen reader users to bypass repetitive navigation and jump straight to content. Without this, users with motor impairments would have to tab through every menu item on every page load.
Impetuous Xerxes, unpeopling the whole surface of the continent.
Xerxes is insulted for his violence rather than praised at they are actions taken without proper thought. Unlike Gilgamesh who is praised for his strength no matter how said strength is being used, showing the differences in a man's role -- particularly a ruling man. In ancient Persia it was more valued to rule with compassion rather than fear and the eradication of your enemies, Xerxes goes against this.

My son was hurled to the ground and his father Darius stood by his side compassionating him.
Here, instead of Darius being represented sternly, he tries to be empathetic to his son's plight in Atossa's dream. This shows Darius having not only strength but intelligence, adding to what is seen as masculine. Aeschylus, living in Athens -- a hub of intellect -- respected Darius for having this trait despite their homes being sworn enemies. Treating Darius like a hero creates a dynamic character we still see in modern heroes. While Superman is revered for his strength and character, others like Batman and Mister Fantastic are admired for their intelligence. Masculinity being associated with intelligence is not a new concept either -- men are not expected to be mindless oafs -- schools were opened only for men for most of history with women being barred off from the life of a scholar. Aeschylus' unique perspective as an Athenian would value educated and competent minds.

Atossa
The Persians differs from stories such as The Epic of Gilgamesh and Ramayana by the power that women in the story hold as well as how it critics the actions of Xerxes. Atossa is not a hopeless damsel in distress who watches her son through himself at death to avenge his father, she goes to the elders to use her political power to make her son pull back from Athens.

Agoddess made him, strongas a savage bull, none canwithstand his arms.
In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is perceived as a hero due to his hypermasculine features, even when he is tyrannical because physical strength is what was valued in men. One could argue that the ideal man in any society would be one that is considered a hero, and in our modern concessions the best heroes cannot just be strong but must also be kind. Two of the most "ideal" heroes, Captain America and Superman, are men who along with being built like bodybuilders are also kind first and foremost, they stan for hope. This is how our modern conception has changed. Gilgamesh's tyranny is not seen as a good thing in the story, it is about he can change despite seemingly having everything. The difference is that many modern heroes start good. Still, other elements besides the strength stay the same, for example, these heroes also must have some kind of enhancement like Gilgamesh did. He was made by a goddess to be perfect just like Steve Rogers was made to be perfect by the super soldier serum, and Clark Kent was made to be superpowered by the sun.

'That axe, which you saw, which drew you so powerfully like love of awoman, that is the comrade whom I give you, and he will come in his strength like one of thehosts of heaven. He is the brave companion who rescues his friend in necessity.'
The queer reading of The Epic of Gilgamesh, agreed upon by many scholars, unsurprisingly speaks to the characters as heroes even in the modern age. A big strong man taking a more feminine man under his wing so they can experience the world together and all has to offers is a classic queer trope we see in The Epic of Gilgamesh as well as Batman. As a character, Batman has always been campy, he's a grown man who fights crime in a spandex bat costume, but in the 1940s when his younger and more notably lithe athletic sidekick, Robin or Dick Grayson, was introduced, there was no denying the queer subtext. Like Gilgamesh and Enkidu, they complete each other in their ventures with fighting gods and the criminals in the streets of Gotham City. Queer masculinity is reliant on big burly men, just the same as heroes old and new. These two worlds interconnecting is no surprise. The comic industry as it is today was built by minorities, by Jewish, queer, trans, and black and brown creatives living in New York City. Their subject matter speaks to that.

Sita Sings the Blues
Sita Sings the Blues has an interesting mix of ancient and modern views of masculinity, as the source text Ramyana was very heavy in its views of gender roles. Sita is a damsel in distress character without a real voice even, mirroring how Nina Paley felt about her relationship, and she depends on Rama for everything, being made to serve him as his wife. Rama is meant to be an extremely masculine figure, who follows his duties perfectly and deals with hardships flawlessly. By way of his isolation due to exile, it makes him similar to modern heroes such as Spider-Man who is known for working alone. Both are tragic heroes who have been delt bad hands in life, Rama , through his spiteful stepmother and exile, and Spider-Man through his "Parker luck." Their love interests are also used similarly. When Sita is kidnapped, it gives Rama a reason to dominate the king Ravana via combat, to show that he is more of a man. Spider-Man's most infamous love interest, Gwen Stacy is also the victim of kidnapping although for different reasons. In the Spider-Man's case, instead of him proving himself as more of a man than the Green Goblin, fails. It becomes a great shame for the hero for over five decades. Both Gwen Stacy and Sita are victims because of the men they love and are used as weak spots for them. The difference with Spider-Man, that shows change in modern perspective of masculinity is that he not seen as weak for his failures nor is he any less popular. In fact, Spider-Man who was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko who was created with the intention of not being a stereotypically masculine superhero is one of the most, if not the most, popular modern heroes. While Rama is valued for being perfect, Spider-Man is valued for being flawed and human.

This work provides a much-needed systematic evaluation of the relationships between familial (FH) and polygenic (PRS) risks and their contributions to disease susceptibility in a panel of common diseases (1). The results have clear implications for risk-stratification, but as discussed in subsequent letters to the editor (2, 3) the results and their underlying data may also contribute to an understanding of causation in these diseases. Mars et al (1) do implicitly draw a conclusion regarding causation in describing in the Abstract the striking finding illustrated in their Fig 7: “…low PRS compensated completely for the risk implied by positive family history” (my emphasis). The potential mechanisms accounting for this compensation are not explicitly discussed in Mars et al (1) or in the related correspondence (2, 3). I suggest that a simple mechanism arises naturally in a model of familial inheritance based on segregation of very rare causal variants with large effects. This mechanism may be testable in existing FinnGen data.
Taking the disease I’m most familiar with as an example (T2DM), and ignoring for the moment any non-genetic FH effects and other confounders, FH+ then represents 50% transmission of causative variants while hiPRS and lowPRS are potential markers of 100% and 0% transmission respectively. Rather than compensating for FH effects, lowPRS is then a marker of absence of transmission of causative variants. The cumulative incidence at 80 years (Ic) in the T2DM data from FH+ in Fig 7 illustrates this interpretation: taking lowPRS (Ic = 0.29) and hiPRS (Ic = 0.69) to represent 0% and 100% transmission of causative variants, a predicted Ic for 50% transmission can be calculated as the mean (= 0.49) and compared to the FH+ estimate (= 0.47) giving a predicted/estimated ratio (P/E) = 1.04. The model provides a plausible explanation for the T2DM data. The same calculation applied to all of the diseases represented in Fig 7 gives a mean P/E = 1.06 ± 0.07 (SD), supporting a general applicability of the model in these data.
The above calculations are consequences of the also striking linear relationships between FH prevalence and PRS across most of the panel of diseases (Fig S2). In the case of T2DM a linear regression of FH prevalence by decile from Fig S2 on PRS expressed as Z-scores corresponding to decile means in a normal distribution gives R = 0.98. A model in which elements of PRS are linked to very rare, perhaps private causative variants running in families provides a simple explanation for these data. Such causative variants would not be statistically identifiable in GWAS-like approaches.
This model in which PRS effects are mediated through linkage to large effect variants predicts that elements of PRS would track these large effects in families and under favourable circumstances PRS or some elements of them could show evidence of segregation. In testing for segregation it would be necessary to consider the contributions of other genetic and non-genetic contributors to disease expression. In the case of T2DM excess adiposity, which is almost a necessary condition for T2DM expression, and is under interacting genetic and environmental influences would need to be incorporated into the model.
We have obtained evidence supporting this type of model (segregation) in the genetics of body composition using distribution analysis of a latent adiposity phenotype vs FH in a modest sample (4) and of BMI vs FH in a very large sample (NHANES (5)). In both studies we used FH of diabetes as a surrogate for FH of excess adiposity justified by the very close clinical association between the two conditions. I suggest that a two-hit model involving independent familial transmission of excess adiposity and T2DM susceptibilities could form the basis of a segregation analysis in the FinnGen data. The plausibility of this model can be illustrated using the Ic data in Fig 7. The model predicts that 25% of FH+ individuals would inherit both susceptibilities and with full expression would therefore account for 25% of the excess incidence giving a predicted Ic = 0.47, equal to the (digitised) measured outcome. The same model applied to the FH+ hiPRS group assuming 100% transmission of T2DM and 50% of excess adiposity susceptibilities predicts Ic = 0.64, slightly lower than measured (0.69) but within the displayed confidence interval.
The extent to which this model if supported could lead to the identification of causative variants is unclear to me. I assume that it would involve analyses of data which included all available related individuals and hence could track extended family structures. Perhaps the extent to which adjustment of genomic analyses for principal component scores could obscure relevant signals of relatedness should be considered.

As every image heading has a small amount of text, it would be compatible with a screen reader, as it can read 125 characters. It is therefore content that is navigable for visually impaired customers. What I'm not sure about is how the user will be able to access what is in the image. Do they need to click that image? If so, that could be harder to use for customers needing accessibility.
CAREERS
This is good practice. The entire website uses clear, predictable headings to organize its content. This follows the understandable principle by ensuring that the operation and information of the user interface are not beyond the user's comprehension.
MENUS
This is bad practice. When I click on the food or drink option, it turns out to be in pdf format. This means that it may be invisible to screen readers whereas the content should be robust enough to be interpreted by assistive technologies like text-t-speech software.
RESERVE
This is good practice. This is because the principle is understandable. The term "RESERVE" is a simple, direct, and predictable label. It follows the principle that the operation of the user interface must be understandable to all users. By using this term, the site ensures the content is not beyond the users' understanding.
MENUS
This is good practice. It indicates the operable principle. The site uses clear focus indicators, which is essential for users with motor impairments who navigate via keyboard rather than a mouse.
I learned that a chain letter is a message that tries to get recipients to copy and forward it to others, creating an exponentially growing “chain” that spreads through email, social media, or physical mail. These messages often use emotional manipulation, false promises (like money or rewards), or threats of bad luck or harm to encourage sharing, and they can sometimes function like scams or pyramid schemes. The source I looked at explained that chain letters can come in different forms, including hoaxes meant to deceive or trick people, and urban legends like warning-style stories meant to spread widely. Some of them may seem harmless, they can waste time, spread misinformation, or be used for fraud or cyberbullying.
One thing I find important in the chapter is its focus on how normal and widespread copying and remixing has become online, but also how that can create ethical problems when original creators aren’t credited. In my opinion, the chapter does a good job showing that not all copying is harmful remixing can actually be creative and culturally meaningful, but it also highlights a real issue when people or platforms benefit from content without acknowledging where it came from. I think attribution should be more intentional and easier on social media, because right now the system often rewards speed and virality more than credit or fairness.
One detail from the source “Digital Reminders of a Lost Pregnancy” (The Atlantic) is that recommendation systems and app notifications can continue delivering pregnancy related content even after a miscarriage, which can intensify emotional distress for users. The article describes how people who used fertility and pregnancy apps continued receiving updates and reminders that no longer matched their situation, which can make it difficult to emotionally separate from the apps or even delete them. This source connects to the chapter’s discussion of how algorithm driven systems and automated content delivery can unintentionally reinforce harmful or distressing experiences when personalization is not sensitive to major life changes. I think its important to have "not interested buttons" to lessen viewing certain unwanted content on your explore feeds.
One detail from the chapter is that recommendation algorithms can create filter bubbles, where users are mainly shown content that matches their past behavior and reinforces their existing views. In my experience on social media, I notice that once I interact with certain types of videos or posts, my feed quickly stats to relate by showing similar content, making it harder to see different perspectives. The chapter’s discussion of polarization also connects to this, since engagement driven algorithms can unintentionally push more extreme or emotional content to the surface and shape what users are exposed to over time.
One detail from the source is that color blindness or "color vision deficiency" is most commonly an inherited condition that affects the ability to distinguish certain colors, especially red and green, due to variations in cone cells in the retina. It is more common in males because it is often X-linked, but it can also be acquired through disease, injury, or medication. I learned that there is no cure, people typically adapt using tools, apps, lenses, and environmental adjustments to help manage everyday tasks involving color recognition.
One question I had while reading this chapter is how designers can realistically create technology that is accessible for such a wide range of disabilities and experiences. Since disabilities can be permanent, temporary, invisible, or situational, it seems difficult to design one single platform that works well for everyone. I wonder how companies decide which accessibility features to prioritize and who gets included in those decisions

The two menus are presented as images with an empty or missing alt attribute, and no caption, which means it is not accessible to screen readers. Since the menu contains essential information such as food options and prices, it should be provided in accessible text format or include descriptive alt text. Without this, users with visual impairments cannot access key content, which unfortunately reduces the overall accessibility of the page. Although the images are clear and can be zoomed in on when clicked, this does not fully address the accessibility issue for screen reader users.
Gallery
This page uses responsive design which is not just an accessibility design feature but also just general design best practice. From the accessibility perspective, it supports robustness, which means that the page can be accessed from different devices, screen sizes, and browsers. This makes it accessible for may rely on different or older devices. When the screen size is reduced, the layout changes while remaining visually clear and well-structured, particularly in the gallery section.
Home
The navigation bar and the logo on the left allow the users to quickly navigate through the different sections on the page. Another accessibility feature on this page is keyboard navigation, where users can move through all the interactive elements using the Tab key and activate them using the Enter key. This is also applies to the 'Reserve a Table' button, however a key part of the reservation form cannot be fully accessed using keyboard navigation, which is a limitation. But hopefully this will be updated soon! Additionally, the user can scroll up and down in the page using the arrow keys.
RESERVE A TABLE
This button is a clear call to action, clearly indicating where users should click to "reserve a table". Its visually emphasized by the coloured box, helping it stand out from the background. The contrast of the button and the background also enforces a visual hierarchy and makes it easy to recognize it as an interactive element. The use of colour also supports the page's accessibility, especially for users with low/colour vision deficiencies, making sure that the button is emphasized.

The heading and subheading are larger and bolder than the body text on this page, this creates a clear visual hierarchy. This helps user identify the structure and main sections of the page. These show an accessible design choice as it makes the page understandable by improving readability and making content easier to scan, for uses with cognitive disabilities.
I thought it was interesting that Matthew 7:12 was included as a source because the idea of treating others the way you want to be treated connects strongly to ethics on social media. A lot of online harassment, public shaming, and harmful behavior might be reduced if people applied this principle before posting or responding online. It also shows that ethical ideas used in technology discussions can come from religious and philosophical teachings that have existed fro a while before social media.
I think people still say ‘social media isn’t real life,’ but I believe at this point social media has such a strong influence on people’s emotions, relationships, and opinions that it can affect real life. Things that happen online can impact mental health, jobs, friendships, and even politics. At the same time, I do think social media only shows selective parts of people’s lives, so it can create unrealistic expectations about what life is actually like.
About Us
I would also like to discuss about the robustness of the website specifically towards mobile users. When it comes to people who either don't have access to a personal computer, or just use their phone for shopping, this website has a great UI.
Try and open your phone to go to this website. It's extremely navigatable and naviagate!

In terms of understandability, I really do think this website has it down pact for the average user. Almost all item titles are simple and don't overwhelm the user with many other descriptions and information. If you click on one of the items, it has all the want to knows about it.
However, I would like to mention that sites like Amazon that do have long items are better for those with visual disabilities. Those with text-to-speech can easily understand the description of the object.

One things I find that is interesting about this website is that all the images contain alt text which is extremely helpful for the visually impaired as it allows text-to-speech to read the descriptions of the items on the page. However, it could defintely go into much more detail about what is actually described in the picture as whats listed it just a repeat of the item description. In fact, I think that it might be more disorienting for someone with visual impairment because they would be hearing the same description twice.
P.S. If you want to check alt text in Chrome, you can go to Settings --> Site Settings --> Images --> Don't allow sites to show images.
Coffee Classes
I really like the ease of use in terms of looking for specific needs. The tabs at the top such as "Machine & Grinders" or "Accessories & Supplies" easily show descriptive categories of what exactly is needed thus I would deem it to have sufficient operability.

The first thing I notice when coming to this website is that there are no videos or sound at all. This would be invisible to their hearing, which would be dis-advantagous to someone who has visual issues. Ideally, it would great to have an audio interface to either answer questions to improve the perceivablility of the website.
The Justine Sacco situation shows how quickly social media can turn one post into worldwide public shaming. While her tweet was clearly offensive, I was surprised by how millions of people became invested in tracking her flight and waiting for her to land and finding so much of her personal information. It made me think about how social media can blur the line between holding someone accountable and turning them into entertainment for the internet.
I think the people Kumail talked with didnt have answers to his questions because many tech companies prioritize innovation and speed over ethical discussions. They may focus so much on creating new technology and staying ahead of competitors that they do not stop to think about the possible consequences of what they are making. I also think some developers assume that once technology is released, it is the responsibility of users or lawmakers to handle the negative effects, rather than the responsibility of the creators themselves.

No Keyboard Accessibility Indicators: The site provides no visible focus outline when navigating with a keyboard, meaning that as users press the Tab key, there is no highlight, border, or visual cue showing which element is currently selected. For people who cannot use a mouse, this makes the interface extremely difficult to operate because they must guess where the keyboard focus has moved. The absence of a clear focus state also increases cognitive load, since users cannot predict or confirm their position within the page’s navigation flow. This again, violates the Operable principle, which requires interfaces to be fully usable through multiple input methods, and contradicts the idea of designing interactions that reduce physical effort and support accessible navigation.

This section relies heavily on visual products images rather than detailed text descriptions. Users with visual impairments or users relying on screen readers may have more difficulty understating the products if alternative descriptions are limited,

This fine print may reduce accessibility because the text size is extremely small and difficult to read for users with low vision unless they zoom in significantly.
