And this system of linguistic competenceis qualitatively different from anything that can be described in terms of thetaxonomic methods of structural linguistics, the concepts of S-R psychology,or the notions developed within the mathematical theory of communication orthe theory of simple automata.
What are the atomic building blocks that would allow stimulus-response psychology to show complex behaviors?

Now all that was gone. In theory, they qualified for a $3,400 federal stimulus check, but they had no bank account or address to collect it. In theory, Dave was entitled to unemployment, but as of May only about 43 percent of the state’s 1.1 million claims had been paid.
A few paragraphs later this appears: "She set her phone alarm for midnight so that as Thursday turned to Friday, she could check whether Dave’s first paycheck had hit their account. She could hear the clatter of raccoons foraging in a nearby dumpster and the hum of cars rolling through the drive-through. At 12:01 a.m. she looked to see whether Dave’s paycheck had shown up in his account." First they don't have an account for the stimulus money to go to, then they're getting up at midnight to see if the paycheck had hit their account. In addition, it takes about a week to set up direct deposit with most companies.

Behaviorism
Learning-Theories.com published a very handy few pages that describe various learning theories. This is a quick, straightforward, simple way to access information on the different theories. This article, Behaviorism, explains that the theory assumes learners learn by responding to external stimuli in their environment. Learning under behaviorism is characterized by a change in the learner's behavior. I use this in my horse training as I use both positive reinforcement (clicker training) and negative reinforcement (pressure-release) to structure my horse's behaviors. Behaviorism can be translated to human work, too. I've used TAG teaching (clicker training for humans) to teach people to get on and off horses with ease and also to trim horses' hooves. I also use it to clicker train my cats! 6/10

surgical techniques
The nineteenth century was when the great anesthesia debate occurred, when doctors argued if it was safe and/or ethical to knock out a patient for surgery. Of course they were concerned about suffocation. But, doctors preferred not to use it more so to hear patients' screams. Without screaming, you'd never know if they were still alive.
