    1. soles, of his throat, of the bottom of his forearms, which hadn’t really beenexposed to much sun. Almost a light pink, as glistening and smooth as theunderside of a lizard’s belly. Private, chaste, unfledged, like a blush on anathlete’s face or an instance of dawn on a stormy night. It told me thingsabout him I never knew to ask

Motif of skin introduced in CMBYN, where Oliver's duality of skin, tanned, and pink and untouched represents the multidimensionality of identity, and the contradictions that exist within him -- which is what fascinates Elio. The coexistence of both contradictions in such a beautiful, whole, masterpiece who has affinities leaping out of him is enlightening for Elio. Elio may see Oliver as an Elio who he wishes to mature into.

    1. I was going forthe devious smile that would suddenly light up his face each time he’d readmy mind, when all I really wanted was skin, just skin.

Yet again the skin motif -- his duality is what Elio had been searching for -- and it appears in a sexual manner but it really connects to the matter of Oliver's security of identity and of being a whole, even when he recognises that he cannot be one.

    2. billowy blue shirt, wide-open collar, sunglasses, straw hat, skin everywhere

Billowy blue shirt will eventually develop into a symbol, and his skin will be explored as a motif

    1. He lifts his newspaper back up between the two of them like he is closing a door.

"Doors" are mentioned 5 times in this story, twice in service to a metaphor. Here a newspaper is compared to a shutting door- an imposed barrier separating her from her father.

    1. helpless animal

Another instance of paralysis like how the young boy felt paralyzed every time he thought of the dead Priest. Finding parallels through the stories in this book is certainly an interesting endeavor as there are so many of them. It's as if the author is trying to subliminally tell one single story through all those small stories.

    1.   And makes me end where I begun

The circle motif is included for two possible reasons. The more supported reason being, Donne is consoling his wife Anne More by saying that he will leave on these voyages, but he will always return home making a perfect circle. The second speculated reason being that More was pregnant during the time this poem was written. This is likely to be turn because within their relationship the couple had at least 12 children. Anne being pregnant could also explain why she is so emotional about Donne leaving.

By including a number motif of "two" and then "one", it further strengthens the idea that the poem is between a lover and his beloved (two bodies). It also contributes to the idea that these two bodies are united as one entity: the soul.

    1. But now it sounded to me like the name of some maleficent and sinful being. It filled me with fear, and yet I longed to be nearer to it and to look upon its deadly work.

Paralysis here has been personificated into a "maleficent and sinful being", but its deadliness draws the narrator to it despite the fear invoked, serving as a motif similar to the shivering sand in The Moonstone.

    2. grey and massive, with black cavernous nostrils and circled by a scanty white fur

Black cavernous nostrils and white fur form sharp colour contrast. The black cavernous indicates that Flynn is an habitual smoker;. The writer reinforces that he is an habitual smoker for many time. I guess that it may be a motif in this article.

    3. The room through the lace end of the blind was suffused with dusky golden light amid which the candles looked like pale thin flames.

The candle flames were an oft-repeated motif in the story. It was related to death, and the 'dusky golden' light delineated here had a metaphorically sinister meaning. Mining amid the words that appeared frequently with this ominous light would probably further exploit its other allusions.

    1. Kate knelt and burst open the sideboard, lifted the lid of the jam-pot, saw it was empty, put it on the table, and stalked off.

Even though "stalk" can also be interpreted as expression of irritation or impatience, the verb calls to mind more of the walk of an animal, most likely a cat. Looking back to the previous paragraph, the reader can almost imagine "proud, young" Kate as a Siamese cat, in comparison to the girls as tabbies. Earlier in the story Josephine visualizes Con and herself in black gowns and slippers as black cats crawling at night, and Con also displays an interest and concern for the "mice". These feline characteristics throughout the story can perhaps be considered motifs.

    2. "This Life is Wee-ary, A Tear—a Sigh. A Love that Chan-ges, This Life is Wee-ary, A Tear—a Sigh. A Love that Chan-ges, And then... Good-bye!"

I think this song can be considered a motif of the story, but it also seems ironic that Joe sings "This Life is Weary" with a "mournful" and "enigmatic" expression when she had never experienced the true weariness of leading a poor life and never had to undergo the toils of labour.

    1. for you know only A heap of broken images

This poem is all over the place and in this section it sets the tone, which will be reverberated with each book/stanza/line. Fragments, images, and phrases all scattered, leaving the reader with pieces to interpret and conclude.

Eliot pays homage to the past writers by using their stories of love and loss to highlight the relevance of human behavior and desire and the nature and state of the world. Also, the change of narratives, the different styles of verse and prose undoubtedly leaves the reader more distorted and confused than ever.

However, there is clarity between the lines of the dualities and complexities of the Waste Land.

    2. when the human engine waits Like a taxi throbbing waiting,

A taxi is a symbol of modernity, where one can get from point a to point b to point z and back. Eliot descibes this restlessness people feel when they are anxious and dying for some form of action or stimulus.
