Despite the quantitative “no”, when we look at freetext comments we see a number of heartfelt pleas not to mess with arXiv PDFs, from both the author and the reader’s perspective. For example, “Please don’t insert anything in the authors’ PDFs! This should be absolutely up to the authors.” and “Please, please, please DO NOT MESS WITH THE PDFs!”. It’s clear to us that, if we do provide links in PDFs, we need to be extremely careful to respect the wishes of authors at all times. We hear you!

Based on input from the arXiv user survey, we knew that reference extraction and linking was a very high priority for arXiv users.

We decided to proceed with a combined approach – using CERMINE, RefExtract, and Grobid – performing parallel extractions on each paper and then combining the extracted references to produce the most reliable set of references possible. We also added a few extra extraction steps of our own to be sure that we caught arXiv identifiers, and to supplement DOI detection.

I've created a mobile shortcut using the URL Forwarder app to accomplish this with a share functionality after highlighting an ISBN.
Might also try using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.srowen.bs.android&hl=en with the added custom search query

to see if that might work as well. This should allow using a scanner to get ISBN barcodes into the system as well. Useful for browsing at the bookstore.I should also create a javascript bookmarklet for this pattern as well.

The canonical form of identifiers from January 2015 (1501) is arXiv:YYMM.NNNNN, with 5-digits for the sequence number within the month. The article identifier scheme used by arXiv was changed in April 2007. All existing articles retain their original identifiers but newly announced articles have identifiers following the new scheme. As of January 2015, the number of digits used in the second part of the new identifier, the sequence number within the month, is increased from 4 to 5. This will allow arXiv to handle more than 9999 submissions per month (see monthly submission rates).

APIs for Scholarly Resources What is an API? API stands for application programming interface. An API is a protocol that allows a user to query a resource and retrieve and download data in a machine-readable format. Researchers sometimes use APIs to download collections of texts, such as scholarly journal articles, so they can perform automated text mining on the corpus they've downloaded. Here is a simple tutorial that explains what an API is. Below are some APIs that are available to researchers. Some are open to the public, while others are available according to the terms of Temple University Libraries' subscriptions. Many require you to create an API key, which is a quick and free process. How do I Use APIs? You can create a simple query in the address bar in a web browser. However, a more complex query generally requires using a programming language. Commonly used languages for querying APIs are Python and R. (R is the language used in the R software.) The examples given in the documentation for the APIs listed below typically do not include sample programming code; they only explain how the data is structured in order to help users write a query. karnesky commented on Sep 1, 2013 A few things to note here: arXiv does have preprints, but a lot of these are linked to journal articles & some people use it as a reprint server. If an arXiv record has a DOI, I would suggest (strongly) that it should be typed as a journal article. We may even just use the ADS link, which seems to have a great BibTeX-formatted record for most eprints (though I'm torn on doing that). NASA ADS and most others classify arXiv eprints as journal articles anyway. Zotero will import any of those as journal articles, so there might be a case to import all arXiv eprints as if they were journal articles

3.1.1.1. search_query and id_list logic We have already seen the use of search_query in the quickstart section. The search_query takes a string that represents a search query used to find articles. The construction of search_query is described in the search query construction appendix. The id_list contains a comma-delimited list of arXiv id's. The logic of these two parameters is as follows: If only search_query is given (id_list is blank or not given), then the API will return results for each article that matches the search query. If only id_list is given (search_query is blank or not given), then the API will return results for each article in id_list. 5.1.1. A Note on Article Versions Each arXiv article has a version associated with it. The first time an article is posted, it is given a version number of 1. When subsequent corrections are made to an article, it is resubmitted, and the version number is incremented. At any time, any version of an article may be retrieved. A few months later, in August 1991, a centralized web-based network, arXiv (https://arxiv.org/, pronounced ‘är kīv’ like the word “archive”, from the Greek letter “chi”), was created. arXiv is arguably the most influential preprint platform and has supported the fields of physics, mathematics, and computer science for over 30 years.

Currently, since arXiv lacks an explicit representation of authors and other entities in metadata, ADS must parse author metadata from arXiv heuristically.
It will be interesting if solving this problem becomes one of hardcore ORCID integration coupled with metadata extraction from submitted manuscripts.

ADS shares those matches with us via its API, and we use that information to populate DOI and JREF fields on arXiv papers.
I've always wondered if this were true. I continue to wonder if arXiv uses other sources of eprint-DOI matches to corroborate or append to those from ADS.

Unsupervised Learning of 3D Structure from Images Authors: Danilo Jimenez Rezende, S. M. Ali Eslami, Shakir Mohamed, Peter Battaglia, Max Jaderberg, Nicolas Heess (Submitted on 3 Jul 2016) Abstract: A key goal of computer vision is to recover the underlying 3D structure from 2D observations of the world. In this paper we learn strong deep generative models of 3D structures, and recover these structures from 3D and 2D images via probabilistic inference. We demonstrate high-quality samples and report log-likelihoods on several datasets, including ShapeNet [2], and establish the first benchmarks in the literature. We also show how these models and their inference networks can be trained end-to-end from 2D images. This demonstrates for the first time the feasibility of learning to infer 3D representations of the world in a purely unsupervised manner.
The 3D representation of a 2D image is ambiguous and multi-modal. We achieve such reasoning by learning a generative model of 3D structures, and recover this structure from 2D images via probabilistic inference.

When building a unified vision system or gradually adding new capabilities to a system, the usual assumption is that training data for all tasks is always available. However, as the number of tasks grows, storing and retraining on such data becomes infeasible. A new problem arises where we add new capabilities to a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), but the training data for its existing capabilities are unavailable. We propose our Learning without Forgetting method, which uses only new task data to train the network while preserving the original capabilities. Our method performs favorably compared to commonly used feature extraction and fine-tuning adaption techniques and performs similarly to multitask learning that uses original task data we assume unavailable. A more surprising observation is that Learning without Forgetting may be able to replace fine-tuning as standard practice for improved new task performance.
