Doodle poll a week ahead to agree on a time, and I select the most popular times. To run a live session, I require at least four students in attendance. I rotate the times so that all who wish to participate can do so at least once. Students who take part in the live session can skip the discussion board, but the expectations are the same: they must prepare responses to two questions. Live sessions are recorded and posted to the LMS. In some courses we hold a live session every week, while others have just one or two throughout the course.

This seemed like a good disambiguation of the terms at first glance, but actually isn't my favorite.

articipants in an asynchronous discussionare able to compose their messages more carefully. They do not need to be available at the same time, though this also means they do not have the sense of presence that users of synchronous media hav
While reviewing the chronology of Social Media (SM), it struck me that all of the products were asynchronous except for The Palace chat room. In the late 90s and early 2000s, chat rooms were a popular focus of recreational computer users, but today, it seems like live chat has become less popular, in favor of the asynchronous mechanisms. I think our preference for the not-live tools shows how the internet and computers are filling a gap in the real world, experienced mostly synchronously.

a team of researchers in the U.S. and Canada surveyed 4,789 undergraduate students across 95 countries, finding that 84 percent of those students (recruited via Instagram) preferred synchronous over asynchronous delivery for its immersive and social qualities. In contrast with nontraditional distance learners before COVID-19, who valued asynchronous courses for their flexibility, today’s students prioritize face-to-face instruction and connection with others.

1. It’s not about physical vs. digital, but synchronous vs asynchronousIn L&D teams’ minds, the big split used to be between training that happened in-person and training that happened online.
In general, being able to adapt to asynchronous styles of working and learning will be important

graphqlSync is a relatively recent addition to GraphQL.js that lets you execute a query that you know is going to return synchronously and get the result right away, rather than getting a promise. Since we know that introspection won’t require calling any asynchronous resources, we can safely use it here.

7:09 - Discussion of a custom template for use cases; this sounds a bit like some customization similar to Open Scholar on Drupal
Here's a link to Alan Levine's work here: https://cogdogblog.com/category/twu-portfolios/
What has support for WPMU looked like within the pandemic?
Laurie Miles, UNC Asheville
- Uptick with faculty looking for tools to be online. They've gone from 6 or 7 in past years to 17
- Sharing resources with colleagues within the department or at other institutions
Shannon Hauser, University of Mary Washington
- They've seen a disconnect between their LMS (Canvas) and Domains with the LMS winning out
Colin Madland, Trinity Western University
- Didn't have a culture of online teaching
- Fine arts department started tinkering and others within the department are using that template. They spent some time and thought in the Summer and that made it easier for them in the fall.
Jim Groom talked about a "motherblog" (a planet made via RSS). How can we center the idea of a webmention hub to do this?
There was a lot of reversion to what was comfortable in the move to all online pedagogy. Professors were comfortable with lectures, so they stuck with that. There wasn't an emphasis on actual learning.
I should note Glenn Zucman's art work to Colin to pass along to their art department. There could be a community of use cases that might help each other experiment and expand on their ideas.

HyFlex courses can be deceptively difficult to do well. The technology and the curriculum must align, and the technology needs to work consistently for everyone, which requires testing and possibly new installations or upgrades. The learning must be equivalent for all students, guaranteeing that no student is at a disadvantage due to the learning pathway chosen. Instructors must be comfortable and effective with asynchronous teaching; those who are not can easily underestimate the amount of effort and interaction necessary to engage with online students.
This article was published by EDUCAUSE, a well respected non-profit organization whose mission is "to advance higher education through the use of information technology." The article provides a well rounded view of the HyFlex asynchronous learning environment. The author discusses what HyFlex is, its significance, the downsides, where asynchronous learning is going, and the implications for teaching and learning.

The wiki can be used as a semantic networking tool, a way to construct meaningful connections between topics, ideas or concepts. A semantic network is composed of nodes (such as wiki pages ) with meaningful links (hyperlinks) connecting them. A semantic network of wikis can help learners to organize their ideas and to convey that organisation of ideas to others (Jonassen et al, 1999, p.165)

ACTIVITY 2: ASYNCHRONOUS COMMUNICATION TOOLS
a·syn·chro·nous /āˈsiNGkrənəs/ Learn to pronounce adjective 1.(of two or more objects or events) not existing or happening at the same time. 2.COMPUTING•TELECOMMUNICATIONS of or requiring a form of computer control timing protocol in which a specific operation begins upon receipt of an indication (signal) that the preceding operation has been completed.
In telecommunications, asynchronous communication is transmission of data, generally without the use of an external clock signal, where data can be transmitted intermittently rather than in a steady stream. Any timing required to recover data from the communication symbols is encoded within the symbols.

Slack messages should be considered asynchronous communication, and you should not expect an instantaneous response; you have no idea what the other person is doing.
-
just ask the question directly, and the person will respond asynchronously. If you truly need to have a synchronous communication, then start by asking for that explicitly, while mentioning the subject. e.g., "I'm having trouble understanding issue #x, can we talk about it quickly?"

moderating discussion forums
I don't know if I would consider this a routine task considering the amount of facilitation a good discussion often requires. Perhaps moderating a forum related to routine support questions where the questions might be "when is my term paper due", or "how do I access the course syllabus" could be routine posts in a discussion forum. But when you get into forums where learner discourse is key to the learning process, the moderating is not routine, or that moderating is even the right word to use to frame those discussions as these types of discussion forums often require a facilitator, not a moderator.

Distance Education Trends: Integrating new technologies to foster student interaction and collaboration
This article explores the interaction of student based learner-centered used of technology tools such as wikis, blogs and podcasts as new and emerging technology tools. With distance learning programs becoming more and more popular, software applications such as Writeboard, InstaCol and Imeem may become less of the software of choice. The article looks closely at the influence of technology and outcomes.

The most powerful learning takes place in relationship. What kind of relationship can you form with a professor who is lecturing in the little square on the screen?
The problem, for aynchronous ed, then, is how to cultivate that relationship.

Plastic time is described as unanticipated, un-reflexive and fluid, as the “experience of temporal ‘scraps’, of gapsin the schedule”, and as “the negative space of busyness”[p. 233]. Plastic time flies under the radar, being unplanned and non-immersive, and associated with neither productivi-ty nor leisure. It is interruptible, but can also expand until some other activity presents itself.
Definition of plastic time.
Adds nuance to the idea of digital time as plastic -- morphable in some ways. rigid in others, asynchronous but also rhythmic in its own way (especially around the examples of web surfing and TV viewing) when the experience of time is lost.
Does plastic time also hint at kind of materiality?? Time as tangible?
