Emmet Till was a 14 year old that was murdered by a white woman's husband for 'offending her'. His death became a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement, his mother had an open casket at his funeral so that people could see what racism can come down to.
Brown v. Board of Education
A major Supreme Court case that ended racial segregation in public schools.
The introduction of mass production techniques in housing wrought ecological destruction.
Mass production made housing cheaper and faster to build, but it also led to things like deforestation, loss of natural land, and more pollution.

r I had not emitted from myself the god Shu, and I had not spit out from myself the goddess Tefnut; and there existed no other who could work with me
Why is he referring and speaking about himself as such not "emitted" and how no other could work with him?
And when my Eye came to me, and found that I had made another [Eye] in place where it was (i.e., the Moon), it was wroth with (or, raged at) me, whereupon I endowed it
I observed and thought it was interesting how this "eye" refelcts the egyptian cosmological views on the moon and I believed the sun. This could also be referring/in relation to god
I was one by myself, and there was no other being,
I noticed and observed that he thought that there was no other being when there could have been a god or goddess that was with him without him knowing it.
I had union with my closed hand, and I embraced my shadow as a wife,
Question: Why exactly did he have a "union with my closed hand, and I embraced my shadow as a wife"?
But are there no inconveniences to be thrown into the scale against the advantage expected from a multiplication of numbers by the importation of foreigners? It is for the happiness of those united in society to harmonize as much as possible in matters which they must of necessity transact together. Civil government being the sole object of forming societies, its administration must be conducted by common consent. Every species of government has its specific principles. Ours perhaps are more peculiar than those of any other in the universe. It is a composition of the freest principles of the English constitution, with others derived from natural right and natural reason. To these nothing can be more opposed than the maxims of absolute monarchies. Yet, from such, we are to expect the greatest number of emigrants. They will bring with them the principles of the governments they leave, imbibed in their early youth; or, if able to throw them off, it will be in exchange for an unbounded licentiousness, passing, as is usual, from one extreme to another. It would be a miracle were they to stop precisely at the point of temperate liberty. These principles, with their language, they will transmit to their children. In proportion to their numbers, they will share with us the legislation. They will infuse into it their spirit, warp and bias its direction, and render it a heterogeneous, incoherent, distracted mass. I may appeal to experience, during the present contest, for a verification of these conjectures. But, if they be not certain in event, are they not possible, are they not probable? Is it not safer to wait with patience 27 years and three months longer, for the attainment of any degree of population desired, or expected? May not our government be more homogeneous, more peaceable, more durable

One source from the bibliography that stood out to me is the analysis of Trump’s tweets from Variance Explained. The article uses data analysis to show that tweets from Android devices were more negative and aggressive, while iPhone tweets were more neutral and informational . I find this interesting because it suggests that even something as simple as the device used can reveal differences in authorship and tone. It also connects to the idea of authenticity in the chapter—what seems like one “authentic voice” online may actually be produced by multiple people. This makes me question how often we assume a single identity behind an account when that might not be true.
Peter Aldhous. At First It Looked Like A Scientist Died From COVID. Then People Started Taking Her Story Apart. BuzzFeed News, August 2020. URL: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/peteraldhous/bethann-mclaughlin-twitter-suspension-fake-covid-death (visited on 2023-12-07).
This article is about a fake COVID death story, which is an example of how fast misinformation can spread on social media when the story cannot be verified. What I find concerning is that the false story gained a lot of attraction before anybody did their due diligence on the story, showing how even when the truth comes out, damage may already be done.
One idea that stood out is how anonymity can actually support authenticity. At first, that seems contradictory, but it makes sense because people may feel safer expressing their true thoughts or identities when they are not tied to their real name. I think this creates a challenge for platforms, since anonymity can also lead to harmful behavior. It makes me wonder whether platforms can balance authenticity and anonymity at the same time.
One idea from this chapter that stood out to me is the tension between authenticity and anonymity online. I found it interesting that the chapter suggests anonymity can sometimes support authenticity rather than undermine it. At first, that feels counterintuitive because we usually think of anonymous accounts as less trustworthy or even deceptive. But thinking about it more, I agree that anonymity can allow people to express parts of their identity they might hide in real life due to fear of judgment or consequences. For example, people may share honest opinions, personal struggles, or marginalized identities more openly when they are anonymous. At the same time, this creates a difficult balance for platforms, because anonymity can also enable harmful behavior. It makes me wonder: is it even possible for a platform to encourage “authenticity” without limiting anonymity, or are those two goals always in tension?
San Francisco had long been the major business and financialcapital of the Western states, but it had been challenged sinceWorld War I1 by Los Angeles and, in the mid-1950's, was barelyholding its own against explosive growth in Southern California.Probably as fundamental a motivation as any behind BART wasthe desire to keep "The City" as attractive to corporate headquar-ters, financial institutions, and upper-middle-class residents as ittraditionally had been. Of course, those with personal economicinterests in the central district were especially keen to promoteBART
BART was heavily promoted to keep SF
The idea that San Francisco might go the way of Newark or St.Louis was utterly abhorrent
Future clarification - what is this implying? What is the significance of Newark and St. Louis?

Catfishing: Create a fake profile that doesn’t match the actual user, usually in an attempt to trick or scam someone
To me, it is very interesting to see the phenomena of catfishing develop as a result of the digital age. This phenomenon definitely seemed much less popular in the past, with the invention and surge in popularity of social media, we are seeing how harmful this is starting to become, especially with the development of generative AI. Personally, with this growth, I believe platforms do not do enough to prevent catfishing, where innocent people get hurt thinking the person they are interacting with is real. Furthermore, this leads to safety issues that affect users on the platform, so social media can benefit from adding more catfishing prevention features.
