    1. exceptions for rape or incest

Why would murder be legalized in cases of rape or incest?

The unborn human being had no part in the activity, so why execute them?

Murder is not a magic eraser.

Punish criminals for their crimes, not helpless innocent victims.

    1. And with that puerile quarrel between stubborn warlords over the right to own and to rape a girl, Western literature begins.

A stark statement that lays bare the original sin of Western thought.

    1. he gained popularity, particularly among young men, by promoting what he presented as a hyper-masculine, ultra-luxurious lifestyle.

Andrew Tate, a former kickboxer and Big Brother (17, UK) housemate, has gained popularity among young men for promoting a "hyper-masculine, ultra-luxurious lifestyle".

Where does Tate fit into the pantheon of the prosperity gospel? Is he touching on it or extending it to the nth degree? How much of his audience overlaps with the religious right that would internalize such a viewpoint?

    1. Because then we have a world in which grown men, sipping tea, posit thought experiments about raping talking sex dolls, thinking that maybe you are one too.

    1. Excellent article on the complex nature of rape. The key point for me is that too many people think it's always a black-and-white matter. In fact, the boundary between rape and not-rape is not that crisp. There is a boundary layer here. I think that if more people realized every boundary is really a boundary layer, there would be fewer conflicts about such matters.

    1. Hale also wrote what became the most frequently cited defense of the marital rape exemption, the doctrine that shielded a husband from prosecution if he raped his wife. Hale explained that a woman’s agreement to marry meant that she had placed her body under her husband’s permanent dominion. In Hale’s words: “The husband cannot be guilty of a rape committed by himself upon his lawful wife, for by their mutual matrimonial consent and contract the wife hath given up herself in this kind unto her husband, which she cannot retract.”
    2. Hale believed that authorities should distrust women who reported having been raped. In his mind, rape was “an accusation easily to be made and hard to be proved, and harder to be defended by the party accused, tho never so innocent.”

    1. In 1967, Colorado became the first state to legalize abortion in cases of rape, incest, or if the pregnancy would cause permanent physical disability to the birth parent.
    2. enslaved black women in the U.S. developed abortifacients – drugs that induce abortions – and abortion practices as means to stop pregnancies after rapes by, and coerced sexual encounters with, white male slave owners.

    1. Stephen Elliott wrestled for a long time with whether or not to describe what it feels like to be wrongly accused of rape—he wrote something and abandoned it because “I decided that I wouldn’t be able to handle the blowback”—before finally describing his experiences in a published essay.

I have no context with this particular case, but if innocent of the charges, the viciousness of such a public charge without confrontation or proof is tantamount to an emotional rape without the physical violence.

There's something interesting to be learned in this experience.

See: How An Anonymous Accusation Derailed My Life by Stephen Elliott on 2018-09-25. For additional context see this opinion piece follow up a few months later: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/13/opinion/stephen-elliott-moira-donegan-media-men.html

(My opinion of this essay is already biased by the fact that it's published in Quillette...)

    1. Blog that is critical of the fear or disgust of men, that addresses the very factual reasons why men are more frightening than women.

"Androphobic feminists insist that fear of men is not irrational and present us with statistics that 99% of sexual crime against adults, 75% of violent crime and 60% of domestic violence is committed by men. (Figures are more equal in relation to child abuse although men are still somewhat over-represented in most categories except infanticide, sexual assault of boys and psychological abuse of girls.) Furthermore, they tell us that these figures indicate that we have a culture which normalises and condones violent and sexual crime against women by men and masculinity itself needs to revised. However, the vast majority of men do not commit violent and sexual crime against women, women are not the primary victims of violent crime and most sexual crime is committed by a small number of recidivist criminals."

    1. If we are now pretending that gay men can and should be induced or somehow ‘educated’ to pursue sexual relationships with people who have vaginas, how is that different from the appalling conversion therapy that used to be forced upon them? If we are now pretending that lesbians can and should be induced or somehow ‘educated’ to pursue sexual relationships with people who have a penis, how is that different from the ‘corrective rape’ forced upon them? It isn’t. Pretending that lesbians and gay men can ‘choose’ to have partners of the opposite sex is coercive heterosexuality and it’s regressive, reactionary nonsense.

    1. just little fornication. Everybody guilty of that

This is what Squeak's uncle says to coerced her into having sex. Not at all consensual, but he probably also lies that he's not her uncle so that Squeak would feel more obligated to have sex. I believe that man is her uncle, and that he lies like all the other older men in this book. Squeak's uncle pulled the same shit that Celie's dad did. It seems that everyone rapes their younger siblings or offspring. what the fraq?!

This is an excellent use of SNA. I have never seen it used chronologically to map feelings. I love it!

    1. ystander behaviors can tell us there is a difference, but not much more.

How would you analyze this via SNA? What networks would shape bystander intervention? Networks at the party? Personal or friendship networks? Networks on campus? Could you think about doing something on this for your small paper?

    1. legal age of consent (which was age ten in twenty slates

There was one exception: a man's acts with his wife, to which rape law, and hence the age of consent, did not apply.

So it was okay to marry a 10 year old.... hm.
