It is an exciting time to be a robot. They are becoming promptable, not programmed. They are stepping onto factory floors, into warehouses, restaurants, and homes. For sixty years, the answer to keeping us safe around robots was a cage: bolt the machine down, fence it off, keep people out. It worked because the robot was blind and repetitive. The cage kept the risk contained. Dangerous inside, safe outside. Today's robots can see, plan, and work on their own, alongside people. The prize is the largest market on earth: labor itself. But what replaces the cage? Every dangerous machine in the past, from the steam boiler to the elevator to the car, won its place the same way. Its risk became legible: measurable, comparable, priceable. Robot risk today is not legible. But a robot among people today must be compliant and insured from day one. Legibility takes instrumentation to measure, standards to compare, and insurance priced on evidence, turning as one circuit: evidence prices insurance, insurance feeds the standard, and the standard writes the next round of evidence. We call it the Evidence Loop. As a system, it has not started. What follows is our answer: the 17 things robot makers, deployers, insurers, and policymakers can do by 2030 to start the loop that replaces the cage. It is published open for review: we invite you to shape it and join its reviewers.
For sixty years, we knew exactly how to keep a robot safe. It came down to one simple idea: keep people out.
A robot used to wait for instructions. It worked because it was predictable, repetitive, and blind. Now imagine one deciding what happens next.
That assumption is now breaking. The robot is leaving the cage. AI is giving it the ability to see, plan, and act without a script or program for every move. every move.
These machines are moving into warehouses, restaurants, factories, and homes, working alongside the people the cage was built to keep away.
But what replaces the cage?
The machines that changed the world all faced a version of the same problem: how do you make something dangerous safe enough to use around people?
Every dangerous machine in the past, from the steam boiler to the elevator to the car, won its place the same way. Their risks became something people could inspect, compare, and eventually price.
Their risk became legible.
Robot risk isn't there yet.
A robot working around people has to be compliant and insured from day one. But a safety assessment can only tell you what was true when the robot was assessed.
It cannot tell you what happened after the machine went to work: how often it stopped, how often a person had to intervene, what changed after an update, or whether the same problem appeared across deployments.
That matters because insurers cannot price what they cannot measure. And without a history of real-world performance, every new deployment starts with uncertainty.
The missing piece is evidence: a record of what the robot actually did in service, measured in a way that different deployments can be compared.
Once that record exists, the pieces can start reinforcing one another.
It can help insurers price risk, give standards bodies better data, and give deployers a track record they can take to their next renewal.
We call this the Evidence Loop.
This article lays out 17 things robot makers, deployers, insurers, standards bodies, and policymakers can do by 2030 to start the loop that replaces the cage.

The middle, Design and Create, is generation, what AI does at scale. The ends, Define and Validate, are discernment: framing the problem, then interrogating the answer, asking not just whether it passes but what it assumed and what it missed3. The discipline is easy to name and hard to keep: frame before you fall, and validate before you call it done.

Chuck Goldstein, was a members of The Modernaires singing group from the early/mid 30's until 1942. In 1940, they began singing with Glenn Miller and his orchestra. The day after Glenn disbanded the orchestra in 1942 (so he could join the Army), Chuck had left The Modernaires to pursue his own career. I believe around 1945 he formed a new singing group... That being Four Chicks and Chuck! They sung a few commercials, but they also did other songs. They sung with Kate Smith a decent amount. They weren't a long lasting group though, only going until around 1953. After that, Chuck formed Chuck Goldstein Productions, which focused on commercial jingles.

The way books are shelved in libraries helps to increase the chance that even if you don't find the thing you're looking for, along the way you might find other things of potential interest. Modern digital search often decreases this effect which was more common in the analog spaces of card catalogs and library books on shelves.
This experience is some of the unseen or elusive "magic" that Luhmann was referencing in his card “Geist im Kasten?” ZKII 9/8,3. You have to have the experience of searching for things and either finding or not finding them and running into entirely different ideas along the way to appreciate this sort of serendipity which is facilitated by physical zettelkasten practice. The problem of our age is the administration of wealth, so that the ties of brotherhood may still bind together the rich and poor in harmonious relationship. The conditions of human life have not only been changed, but revolutionized, within the past few hundred years. In former days there was little difference between the dwelling, dress, food, and environment of the chief and those of his retainers. . . . The contrast between the palace of the millionaire and the cottage of the laborer with us today measures the change which has come with civilization. This change, however, is not to be deplored, but welcomed as highly beneficial. What I find interesting about this statement is that Carnegie believes wealthy people should be able to make as much money as they can and then deciede for themselves how to helpothers. He seems to trust rich business owners to solve social problems more than the government. This makes me wonde: if wealth distributions should remain "free,' what happens to workers who are still struggling even though they helped create that wealth? Should the responsibility fall entirely on wealthy individuals, or should society have a role in helping address poverty?

This is a fascinating and potentially important preprint. The finding that LSD may influence conserved longevity pathways in Caenorhabditis elegans adds a striking new dimension to the modern reassessment of psychedelics—not only as tools for psychiatry and consciousness research, but possibly as probes into metabolism, stress resilience, cellular aging, and broader biological regulation.
I am especially reminded of the pioneering work of my grandfather, Eugene Seaich, whose short but remarkable 1959 manuscript, The Far-Off Land: An Attempt at a Philosophical Evaluation of the Hallucinogenic Drug-Experience, argued that LSD and mescaline should be regarded as serious instruments for scientific, psychological, and philosophical investigation. Writing before the cultural backlash of the 1960s largely halted psychedelic research, Seaich recognized that these compounds might open “fruitful directions for further investigation” far beyond the limited frameworks of his time.
This preprint is a powerful example of exactly that kind of expanded inquiry. While Seaich focused primarily on consciousness, self-knowledge, perception, and the philosophical implications of the psychedelic experience, today’s researchers are uncovering possible biological effects at the cellular and molecular level. The idea that LSD may interact with aging-related pathways such as TOR signaling would likely have fascinated him.
Whether these findings ultimately translate beyond C. elegans remains to be determined, but the study highlights why psychedelics deserve careful, open-minded, and rigorous scientific investigation. The Far-Off Land stands as an early historical witness to that vision—a reminder that some of the questions now returning to the laboratory were first asked by courageous thinkers decades ago.

Two or three typewriter repair shops have opened up in the past couple of years, though probably not enough to offset the retirements or deaths which include Tom Furrier (Cambridge Typewriter) and Duane Jensen (Phoenix Typewriter) respectively. Lucas Dul opened up a brick-and-mortar typewriter shop in Chicago.
Philly Typewriter and Bremerton Typewriter Company have started up typewriter repair schools/apprenticeships to expand on the trade.
Tom Hanks has continued donating typewriters to typewriter repair shops over the past few years, ostensibly to encourage the space as well as to slim down his own collection.
Richard Polt recently downsized his collection significantly. (His blog is generally a good source of the news of what's new in the past few years.)
Prices are up somewhat in general, but especially for Hermes 3000s, Olympias, Smith-Corona Silent Supers, and Olivetti Letteras even in poor condition.

Alternate perspective: In this scene the white man has become sad and shows a change in emotion from once being hostile towards the black man. He acts as a different person complicating his character because now he is not just seen as an opressor but as someone who might feel regret for their actions but won't change due to the oppressive system his ancestors established. The emotional shift occurs as they are finishing the house and changes from dominance to regret but the end goal of segregation remains.
Most difficult passage: I feel that the reading was overall easy to understand after, but what made this paragraph difficult to understand was the change in emotion from the white man. Why is there a shift in emotion in the white man? And why does he continue to build the house after he feels sad? Why are there no windows and no doors? The passage does not explicitly state the reason behind his change in perspective, but one can infer that the white man is aware that segregation is wrong but does not have it in him to change.
