The voices are pretty good! The stories are better than pretty good! The implications are... maybe terrifying? Curious to hear what you think.       One can now relatively easily use various tools in combination with artificial intelligence-based voices and reading to convert large corpuses of text into audiobooks, podcasts or other spoken media.

      To extend, it could be an interesting exercise to have the kids call up grandmother and grandfather to interview them with questions about when they were growing up, about their parents, and their grandparents. Then you're also getting some of the family oral history together not only for yourself, but for your children as well as future generations.

      I have a nascent card very much like yours, but not as well fleshed out yet.

    1. Is video making podcasts obsolete?

      No.

      I'm two years shy of 30 and I've been listening to "podcasts" - that is, audio programs distributed over RSS - nearly every day since Middle School. In all of that time, the word - not the medium, I'd argue - podcast has been so unnecessarily stretched to oblivion. Before making statements like this... can we please just... try out a few different words to describe what we're talking about here?

      I listen to content because I be Doin Something dog. Cannot and will not look, and the extra production time required to just make a video version has continued to cause friction with the sort of content I actually want to hear.

      There are actually seven different services that this podcaster has done a huge amount of work to put their content on, ostensibly for the widest discovery, but not a single one of them has a link to the raw audio file to make it easy for one to bookmark and listen to later. Apparently the podcasting silo services have managed to win out over the open web.

      Do we really need to make podcasting this hard on individual publishers? Why can't the publisher just have one location and tell all the aggregators, here's a link to my feed, copy it if you will and want to help distribute my content? In some sense, this is part of what is happening as all seven services are using the same findable source, they're just making it more difficult to jump through all the hoops, which means the small guys end up paying more to do the extra work and potentially lose everything if that one source disappears, closes down, or gets acquired and goes away.

      These sorts of artificial hurdles and problems are what make it so hard to get up and running.

    1. Last month Apple announced that it would let podcasters charge subscription fees, of which it would take a 30% cut for the first year, then dropping to 15%; days later Spotify followed suit—but said creators could keep the lot (from 2023 it will take 5%).

      Good to see some of these platforms competing for creators this way. The big question is will the creators really "own" their audiences? or will they just be stuck in a silo in a few years with prices rising?

    1. Just the sort of draconian silo activity you'd imagine that Apple would be doing.

      So much for their free and open directory as their position in the space.

    1. Thus, the creative freedom of creators is limited.

      And thus draconian methods for making the distribution unnecessarily complicated, siloed, surveillance capitalized, and over-monitized beyond all comprehension are beyond the reach of one or two for profit companies who want to own the entire market like monopolistic giants are similarly limited. (But let's just stick with the creators we're pretending to champion, shall we?)

In the coming months and years, we’ll be working to further enable choice for creators, including giving them the power to choose not only how someone wants to create or monetize audio, but also where specific content is able to be consumed, ensuring creators have an opportunity to decide if they are aligned with the platforms distributing their content.

      So this means you're going to use simple, open standards and tooling so that not only Anchor and Spotify will benefit? Or are you going to build closed systems that require the use of proprietary software and thus force subscriptions? Are you going to Balkanize the audio space to force consumers into your product and only your product? Or will producers be able to have a broad selection of platforms to which they could distribute their content?

      I wish their app allowed one to actually use the podcast's native URL(s) when sharing instead of providing a pca.st shortened URL.

    1. One of the questions that came up during the SPLOT workshop is if there’s a SPLOT for podcasting, which reminded me of this post Adam Croom wrote a while back about his podcasting workflow: “My Podcasting Workflow with Amazon S3.” . We’re always on the look-out for new SPLOTs to bring to the Reclaim masses, and it would be cool to have an example that moves beyond WordPress just to make the point a SPLOT is not limited to WordPress (as much as we love it) —so maybe Adam and I can get the band back together

      I wonder if this could be used to create a SPLOT that isn't WordPress based potentially using APIs from the Internet Archive and Huffduffer? WordPress-based infrastructure could be used to create it certainly and aggregation could be done around tags. It looks like the Huffduffer username SPLOT is available.

    1. Huge follower counts on YouTube and social media DO NOT easily translate to income. And those followers expect you to be "real" -- so they are hostile to advertising and sponsored content.

      Do you own a business? It might pay to offer a salary to the producers of a YouTube channel that reaches your target audience -- in exchange for low-profile "brought to you by" links and mentions that won't offend that audience.
