Adler J3 Typewriter - YouTube<br /> by [[Joe Van Cleave]]<br /> accessed on 2025-09-27T15:42:43
The rubber gromets/bushings of the Adler J3 are often an issue with their cases when they've aged.
Joe also compares this with the Olympia SM3 and an Optima Super typewriter (poorly designed)
John Lewis is closing his typewriter shop in Arizona soon.

The average American is seldom far removed from Henry Dreyfuss’s influence. When he picks up a Bell telephone, rides a John Deere tractor, scoots a Hoover vacuum over a rug, writes with an Eversharp pen, pounds a Royal Typewriter, awakens to a Westclox Big Ben, thumbs a Minneapolis-Honeywell thermostat, sprawls in a Statler Hotel room in Washington, yanks open the door of a GE refrigerator, focuses an Ansco camera, shoots a 105millimeter ack-ack gun, or swats a fly with a U.S. Manufacturing €orp. fly swatter, he is utilizing Henry Dreyfuss’s skill and pay-‘ing him a tribute which runs annually intoseven figures.

The Motive Puzzle: The tip which led to Bolton’s arrest had come from John Miller of Highland Park, now awaiting sentence with John Pantello for burglary. Miller told the police: “Bolton offered me and John Pantello fifteen grand to bump off Reuther.” Later, he added, Bolton hid two shotguns in Miller’s home. Several hours before the near-fatal shooting, Bolton came after the guns. “I want my two typewriters,” he said, according to Miller. “[’m going out and kill me a redheaded Communist,” Bolton was quoted as adding, with complete disregard of Reuther’s staunch anti-Communism.

There was no office machinery at all–the typewriter was known but scarcely used. Even telephones were rarities. The card index, the filing cabinet, the loose-leaf ledger were all but unknown. Of course there were no calculating machines.

John Aubrey, the first person to make a serious study of stone circles, put his finger on the problem: ‘These Antiquities are so exceeding old that no Bookes doe reach them.’ He developed a more effective method. Using measurements and comparative surveys of different circles with notes ‘writt upon the spott’, he was able to work out that megalithic monuments were of distinct types and that they predated the Romans, Saxons and Danes. He thus, almost single-handedly, created the concept of prehistory and invented field archaeology.

At least at the limits of us, because it has an aspect of awe with a little bit more which is to remind us - humiliation in the original sense of the word - to keep us, to give us humility to remember that as we are feeling that sense of expansiveness with awe that we are precisely, ultimately, limited creatures

the death example actually points to something more primordial! It points to the fact that I can never make a focal object of my framing, my capacity for Relevance Realization. I mean, Perspectively. What I mean by that is whenever I am thinking or doing anything, [-] it's always framed because if I'm unframed, I'm facing combinatorial explosion, which is not intelligible to me.

it is phenomenologically impossible for me to Perspectively know what it is like to be dead, because whenever I try to conjure up a frame (indicates the smallest, central box in the diagram), “Oh, I'm in a dark room! But wait, I'm still there in the dark room. There's the hereness and the nowness… Oh well, then I'm nowhere! Well, then I'm just an empty…!” No matter what I do, I can't get a framing that has within it my own non-existence, perspectively.

Secrets of the carnyx by [[National Museums Scotland]] featuring John Kenny
300 pictures of the instrument from the ancient world, but only about 6 depict it being played, all show it being it played upright.
A Deskford Carnyx reconstruction was constructed to allow the instrument to be played upright.
The Deskford Carnyx has a skull which resonates with sound rather than coming straight out as might be imagined.
Tintignac hoard included six carnyces. These included ears which ring sympathetically as the instrument is played. The sound come straight out of mouth of the instrument.
The Tintignac Carnyx was meant to be played horizontal or off horizontal.

Descriptions, or rather caricature, ofsocieties cannot be transposed in time and space under an inventedconcept of the ‘Celts’; indeed the whole use of the terms Celt andCeltic is something which should be avoided as it distorts ourunderstanding of the archaeological record.

The Atlantic. Review of Plutarch’s Lives, by Arthur Hugh Clough, John Dryden, and Plutarch. January 1860. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1860/01/plutarchs-lives/627616/
Some excellent quotes and evidence for the importance of Plutarch's Lives, almost more so than the importance of this particular translation.
 -

The book is interesting from Dryden’s connection with it, but still more so — considering how slight that connection was, his only contribution to it being the Life of Plutarch—from the fact, that the translations of some of the Lives were made by famous men, as that of Alcibiades by Lord Chancellor Somers, and that of Alexander by the excellent John Evelyn ; while others were made by men who, if not famous, are at least well remembered by the lovers of the literature of the time,—as that of Numa by Sir Paul Rycaut, the Turkey merchant, and the continuer of Dr. Johnson's favorite history of the Turks,—that of Otho by Pope’s friend, the medical poet, Dr. Garth,—that of Solon by Creech, the translator of Lucretius,—that of Lysander by the Honorable Charles Boyle, whose name is preserved in the alcohol of Bentley's classical satire, — and that of Themistocles by Edward, the son of Sir Thomas Browne.
Dryden didn't translate Plutarch himself, but edited it and relied on translation by others, including his friends and acquaintances.

John Dryden apparently coined the English word 'biography' in his 1683 edition of Plutarch's Lives.

In the Buddhist world we even in, in a way you can say you're always dying. You're already dying. So just thinking about it in those terms: what's the cultural impact of thinking about life as death, actually—as a process that maybe never ends?
for - adjacency - thinking of life as death - we are always dying - Deep Humanity - living is dying - from Youtube - Between Life and Death: Understanding Tukdam - John D. Dunne

I'll talk about some cases in a moment— there's very sudden decomposition when the "tukdam" ends. You can have people who have been in tukdam for 27 days and then on the— as one of the cases that we're gonna be publishing on soon— and on the 28th day there's like very dramatic decomposition. Just boom! It seems to happen.
for - Buddhism - Tibetan - Thukdam - can end suddenly and dramatically - from Youtube - Between Life and Death: Understanding Tukdam - John D. Dunne
 -

And this is one of the big problems right now— [pointing at the slide] tukdam regularly occurs in non-experts, right? You find, you know, people who are not great trained tantric practitioners who know all the commentaries and, you know, who aren't even monks or nuns— who are just ordinary lay people—and they go into "tukdam."
for - Buddhism - Tibetan - Tukdam - ordinary people with no training also go into Tukdam - from Youtube - Between Life and Death: Understanding Tukdam - John D. Dunne

I've encountered several people in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions who say, "Oh, we, you know 'tukdam,' yeah, people go in 'tukdam,' "but it's like, you know, not that big a deal. It's, we don't care that much." Part of the reason they don't care that much is that the idea that you need to go into this completely, kind of, a state where there's no phenomenal content— that's just a pure clear light mind— actually is something that many of the contemporary practitioners and teachers in those lineages don't agree with.

it's said that you can get there by doing like philosophical analysis, but this is using basically physiological techniques to get to the same place phenomenologically. So that's what "tukdam" is theoretically

So the concept here is that you're actually no longer even capable of thinking, you're no longer capable of seeing, you're no longer capable of hearing, and so on. All that's left is just this kind of sheer consciousness itself, which doesn't even have a subject-object structure. So for the Gelugpas that lack of subject-object structure is not really relevant. For the other traditions it's extremely relevant, because it's said that if you're going to understand the nature of the mind, the fundamental distortion in the mind is precisely that subject-object structure. So you have to cultivate a non-dual awareness,

And at the time of death, there, there's a certain kind of configuration of those energies that occur and you can actually, you can, in a sense, force those energies— maybe that's not the right term, but some people would agree with that metaphor— you can force those energies to enter into that configuration through various forms of yogic practices.

the sense we have now began when Paleolithic hunter-gatherers started settling into Neolithic agricultural villages. And then at that point, there was a separate human space—it’s the village and the cultivated fields around it. Hunter-gatherers didn’t have that, they’re just wandering through “the wild,” “wilderness.” Of course, that idea would make no sense to them, because there’s no separation.

adjacency - between - paleolithic hunter-gatherer - to neolithic agricultural village - dawn of agriculture village - cultivated fields around it - settling down - birth of the human space - the village - thus began - the great separation - adjacency relationship - He connects two important ideas together, the transition from - always-moving, never settling down paleolithic hunter-gatherer to - settled-down neolithic agricultural farmers - The key connection is that this transition from moving around and mobile to stationary is the beginning of our separation from nature - John Ikerd talks about the same thing in his article on the "three great separations". He identifies agriculture as the first of three major cultural separation events that led to our modern form of alienation - The development of a human place had humble beginnings but today, these places are "human-made worlds" that are foreign to any other species. - The act of settling down in one fixed space gave us a place we can continually build upon, accrue and most importantly, begin and continue timebinding - After all, a library is a fixed place, it doesn't move. It would be very difficult to maintain were it always moving.

for - insight - embodied wisdom of interdependent origination - increase in synchronicity - John Churchill - metaphor - node in an interconnected graph of reality
insight - embodied wisdom of interdependent origination - increase in synchronicity - John Churchill - This is an interesting insight - We can possibly explain it this way: - When we have a limited embodiment of who we are as the traditional ego-bound-to-body, our experiences are interpreted in a limited way, though we aren't aware of it - However, when we have a more expanded embodiment of who we are that is more nondualistic, in which - sense of self and - the environment - become blurred due to experiencing cause-and-effect between self and environment in a more nuanced way - When we don't have enough perceptual acuity to understand that one event is related to another, we infer correlation instead of causality - events that appeared random from the limited perspective become nonrandom and more noticed at the more expansive perspective - From a more expansive perspective, we could feel more strings attached to us and events pull on us through those connecting strings - When we feel separate, we don't experience the pull of those connecting strings - Indeed, we do not even perceive there to be strings that connect us
metaphor - node in an interconnected graph of reality - One possible metaphor is that as we expand our perception and cognition, we become more aware that we are like a node with infinite connections to other nodes of reality

"I'm always trying to get back to the 20s a little bit." <br /> —John Dickerson, in Field Notes interview (2016) https://vimeo.com/169725470
Dickerson says he's got two screens on the computer in his office as well as an ipad and a phone. But he's also got a "notebook does only one thing". He's also got an old black lacquer Underwood (No. 4, 5, or 6?) on his office desk still.
Wonder if he uses it?
 -

Reporter John Dickerson talking about his notebook.
While he doesn't mention it, he's capturing the spirit of the commonplace book and the zettelkasten.
<div style="padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;"><iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/169725470?h=778a09c06f&title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div> <script src="https://player.vimeo.com/api/player.js"></script>[...] I see my job as basically helping people see and to grab ahold of what's going on.
You can decide to do that the minute you sit down to start writing or you can just do it all the time. And by the time you get to writing you have a notebook full of stuff that can be used.
And it's not just about the thing you're writing about at that moment or the question you're going to ask that has to do with that week's event on Face the Nation on Sunday.
If you've been collecting all week long and wondering why a thing happens or making an observation about something and using that as a piece of color to explain the political process to somebody, then you've been doing your work before you ever sat down to do your work.

“I feel comfortable that alcohol and guns shouldn’t mix,” he said.
He can "feel comfortable" all he wants, but his feelings are where the subject ends.
Simply having opinions does not grant anyone authority to impose those opinions on others - especially when one is of the tyrannical opinion that engaging in an activity that one disapproves of is enough to deprive that person of the human right to self-defense outright.
 -

It’s a reasonable rule
It is not reasonable that a person should surrender their right to effective self-defense simply because they are drinking.
 -

He said the nation’s founders absolutely recognized the commonsense notion that guns and booze are a dangerous combination.
...he asserted without evidence, and the obviously biased reporter just let that slide.

here's a bunch of new practices or at least old practices that have been recovered or at least reverse engineered in which people can deeply recover a lot of the experience and the learning of what we're talking about here
for - reverse engineer - recover - from old practices - John Vervaeke - STOP - meaning crisis - RESET - reverse engineer - recover from old practices
 -

we can reverse engineer practices for people that help them to do uh the recovery and also the development of the cognitive light cone of right of a recovery of a lot of of what is lost for people in the meaning crisis
for - STOP - intervention - integration of cognitive science and wisdom traditions to - provide a praxis to address the meaning crisis - John Verveake
 -

with the Verve foundation's help we set up ecologies of practices uh we have a practice called dialectic into dialogos that helps people get into mutually shared flow states of cognitive exploration and people discover collective intelligence as something that is phenomenologically present and almost agentic in what's happening
for - comparison - John Vervaeke - Vervaeke Foundation - collective intelligence dialogues - good alignment to Indyweb individual/collective gestalt - Deep Humanity
comparison - John Vervaeke - Vervaeke Foundation - collective intelligence dialogues - good alignment to Indyweb individual/collective gestalt - When he describes the mutually shared flow states where conversants discover collective intelligence as something that is phenomenologically present - it is a discovery of the intertwingledness between - individual and - collective - that is, the individual/collective gestalt described in Deep Humanity reference https://vervaekefoundation.or

a model of the self that is inherently Collective and flowing
for - quote - model of a Self that is flowing and collective - John Vervaeke - similiarity to - Deep Humanity foundations on emptiness

bateson's Paradox actually slams into the Paradox of self-transcendence
for - Bateson's paradox - meets - paradox of self-transcendence - John Vervaeke
 -

I'm building towards an argument here because I think that Maps into something that goes with your butterfly that human beings do and this is La Paul and transformative experience human beings go through these profound changes and right and so she gives she does the gunan experiment of people offering to turn you into a vampire which is very much like your butterfly example
for - participatory knowing - perspectival knowing - caterpillar butterfly transformation - Gunan experiment - vampire transformation - John Vervaeke - Michael Levin
insight - adjacency - caterpillar butterfly transformation - human transformation - John provides a nice adjacency / insight here, comparing human transformation as similar in kind and different by degree to Levin's caterpillar butterfly transformation - In Indyweb terminology, we are constantly creating new selves and leaving trails of our old selves behind, all to be recorded in our mindplex - This is none other than the teachings of many ancient spiritual traditions which hold that the human being is a constantly changing process, not a static thing
 -

I want to start with that idea of kind of a bidirectional Conformity that it's not only the mind is conforming to the world but the world is conforming to the mind of course you might get tired of me doing this this is a neoplatonic claim right and this is the idea this is this is this is sort of the central idea behind what I call participatory knowing
for - participatory knowing - mutual conformity - mind and the world partcipate - John Vervaeke - responding to Michael Levin
 -

the caterpillar learned all this stuff it gets squeezed down into some sort of sort of molecular substrate and then re-expanded or remapped onto the onto the butterfly that that squeezing is so so so two just two quick things about that one is that this this squeezing and expanding thing is everywhere
for - adjacency - squeezing and expanding is everywhere - Michael Levin - John Vervaeke - Indyweb - salience mismatch - symmathesetic fingerprint - multi-meaningverse - lebenswelt
adjacency - between - sqeezing and expanding - Michael Levin - John Vervaeke - Indyweb - lebenswelt - multi-meaningverse - coding / decoding - salience mismatch - symmathesetic fingerprint - adjacency relationship - In the Indyweb epistemology, we have identified an intrinsic limitation of symbolic communication due to - encoding of the transmitter from the transmitter's unique - lebenswelt and - meaningverse and - decoding of the transmitter's message from the receiver's unique - lebenswelt and - meaningverse - The same symbols are referenced to two different lebenswelt / meaningverse's - The semantic (symmathesetic) fingerprints of the transmitter and receivers vocabulary are all different - This can result in misinterpretation, what we term as salience mismatch

john smith and king lear analogy
for - metaphor - John Smith (actor) - King Lear - Rupert Spira
metaphor - John Smith (actor) - King Lear - Rupert Spira - This is an interesting thought experiment - In the metaphor, the infinite consciousness is like John Smith and the finite human consciousness is like King Lear - The universal consciousness is playing the role of the finite consciousness but loses itself in the role - Spira says: - just as the only consciousness in each of our finite minds is universal consciousness nevertheless - King Lear doesn't know that - King Lear believes i am King Lear, a temporary finite separate person - just like our finite minds don't on the whole know that their reality is infinite consciousness<br /> - So although - the only person present in King Lear is John Smith and - John Smith knows himself just by being himself in the form of King Lear<br /> - he overlooks that knowledge and therefore as King Lear - he has to self-reflect on himself in order to arrive at the experience i am John Smith - What is the relationship between the infinite vs the finite consciousness within the same human? - This reminds me of Dasietz Suzuki's koan that surfaced at the time of his Satori experience - that the elbow does not bend backwards. - Within the bounds of the finite is the infinite
