    1. Only incoming messages were captured (no outgoing).

    2. Apple just changed how iOS validates push notification tokens on iOS 26.4. While it is impossible to tell whether this is a result of this case, the timing is still notable.

    3. Messages were recovered from Sharp's phone through Apple's internal notification storage—Signal had been removed, but incoming notifications were preserved in internal memory.

    1. https://web.archive.org/web/20251230194055/https://www.tomsguide.com/ai/i-turned-a-hotel-key-card-into-a-one-tap-shortcut-for-chatgpt-and-now-i-use-it-every-day

You can use any NFC card (like a hotel key card, which the author doesn't, but I do, usually return on check-out, it seems) to connect it to an iPhone shortcut. Tap the card and it triggers some action, response or workflow.

Says people use it for playlists and lights too. I don't really buy his examples though. You either have to have an NFC in a fixed location (the 'lights' example I believe therefore), or on the move you'd have to dig out the 'right' NFC from someplace (your already full wallet?) then tap it to the phone. That creates actually _more _ friction. 'I stuck a tag on my desk for ....' something specific like he suggests (a list of articles on AI from past 24h) leads to a range of tags on your desk, like when Amazon suggested you have a bunch of tags, one for each product, to build your shopping list. Didn't happen.

    1. The implications are significant. Apple's control over iOS software distribution has always rested on two pillars. First, the App Store as the only legitimate channel. Second, the high barrier to creating software in the first place. The second pillar just collapsed. And without it, the first pillar looks different. The App Store is not going away. It will remain the home of professional, polished applications. But it will no longer be the only place where iPhone software lives.

Two moats, app store for legitimacy and the hurdle for creation. Second one has become more shallow and narrow now.

    1. Google’s chaos makes Apple’s control seem reasonable. I can already hear John and Seb typing: “…and this is why the EU shouldn’t turn Apple into Google.” Let’s be real—Google Play and the App Store don’t compete. They collaborate. Same rates, same model, same unchecked power. Call it a monopoly, call it a duopoly. They share the mobile market without too much crossfire: Apple takes those who can or want to pay, Google takes the rest. Google Play is not an alternative to the App Store. It’s not “Go there if you don’t like Apple.” Google Play is a very lazy, very sloppy carbon copy of the App Store. Their collaboration is not metaphorical. It goes beyond the way their shared control over the mobile app market. Apple collects privacy points, then cashes them in by making Google the default search on iPhone. A lot of that privacy-free Search money flows right back from Google to Apple. 20 Billion USD in 2022. In 2020, “Google’s payments to Apple constituted 17.5% of the iPhone maker’s operating income.” (Bloomberg) And no one really cares, as long as it’s convenient. But as a developer in Europe, we’re glad that the EU does. ↩

iAwriter pointing out that from their perspective G and A appstores don't compete but divvy things up between them. A 20B USD / 17,5% revenue deal makes it tangible. Say they appreciate the DMA because of it.

    1. The most straightforward way to transcribe audio from an existing file is to open the audio or video file in Drafts. Here’s a few of the ways to access transcription: iOS Tap and hold the “+” button for new draft options, select “Transcribe…” Use a share button in another app (such as Voice Memos, or the Files app) that can share audio or video content, then select Drafts in the share sheet.

How to transcribe an audio file into Drafts text? Just share the file to Drafts.

Well, now I've confirmed the most crucial answer I needed answering about iOS 17...

...now just to figure out how I'm going to make this happen.

    1. I noticed fairly quickly that the iOS app was a re-branded release of what used to be Mast. My first instinct upon this discovery was to DM Mast's original developer, Shihab Meboob, on Twitter, but frankly, I've already bothered him enough there over the years, so it's understandable that I didn't hear back. When I downloaded the desktop app I found on Roma's web page and noticed its similarity to Whalebird, I decided to use the site's contact form to inquire about what exactly was going on as gingerly as I could. Happily, I received a reply just *minutes- later from Leo Radvinsky, head of Leo.com, “a Florida-based boutique venture capital fund that invests in technology companies:” Hi David, In both cases we funded the original developers of both Mast and Whalebird to create a branded whitelabel app specially made for Pleroma. The idea was to make Roma a cross platform brand/app. It didn't really work out so now we're working on a new app from scratch called Fedi for iOS and Android and releasing that as open source. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fediverse.app&hl=en*US&gl=US https://apps.apple.com/in/app/fedi-for-pleroma-and-mastodon/id1478806281 I think Roma has been removed from the app stores as it's no longer supported. Let me know if you have any other questions

...coming back to this, now. ...

    1. The absence of Quick Note on the iPhone is a strange, glaring omission that’s baffling to me. I do research on every device, including the iPhone. In fact, I’d argue that the iPhone is the most important place to include Quick Note. That’s because, despite the ample screen of my iPhone 12 Pro Max, it’s still not the best place to read, making saving items for later with Quick Note more valuable there. However, my iPhone is still where I run across links and other material I want to save daily. I’d love to be able to drop links and blockquotes into Quick Note from my iPhone, so I could revisit the material later from the more comfortable reading environment of my iPad or Mac. Not having Quick Note on the iPhone is a significant blow to the feature’s utility.

Considering how I've been publicly speaking and behaving (melodramatically, that is) - as someone who has returned to using my iPhone as my primary working device - this sort of oversight is precisely what I expected, actually, What I did not expect of Apple was to respond as early as the next numeric release to this omission.

Running this very first build of iOS 16, I can indeed that Apple has thought of at least one original context for Quick Note creation, but obviously, it's quite hard to say at this point.

Anywho/how, here's what it looks like at the moment.

Quick Note implemented on iPhone as of iOS 16's very first available dev beta

    1. With text replacement, you can use shortcuts to replace longer phrases. When you enter the shortcut in a text field, the phrase automatically replaces it. For example, you could type "GM" and "Good morning" would automatically replace it.  To manage text replacement, tap Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.  To add a text replacement, tap the Add button , then enter your phrase and shortcut. When you're done, tap Save.  To remove a text replacement, tap Edit, tap the Remove button  then tap Delete. To save your changes, tap Done.

They also have another, debatably much more relevant function Apple’s docs don’t acknowledge!

Setting the same values for Phraseand Shortcut in this menu basically achieves the same thing as “Learn Spelling.”

    1. In all of the widgets, Clear Spaces is at or near the center of the stack to allow for quick swiping up and down to get to a different layout. As I go through my day, I may change the app that’s there to give me a visual cue to focus. I might keep my task manager on work rather than my personal when I need to focus up on work things.

Love the work / home / none modes

    1. In a new article, the New York Times details a little-known technique increasingly used by law enforcement to figure out everyone who might have been within certain geographic areas during specific time periods in the past. The technique relies on detailed location data collected by Google from most Android devices as well as iPhones and iPads that have Google Maps and other apps installed. This data resides in a Google-maintained database called “Sensorvault,” and because Google stores this data indefinitely, Sensorvault “includes detailed location records involving at least hundreds of millions of devices worldwide and dating back nearly a decade.”

Google is passing on location data to law enforcement without letting users know.

    1. A completely different Service Workers’ storyThis section was added on Feb, 8th.Apple followed the Service Worker API, but it creates an entirely different story of what it is and what we can do with it in the future. The main differences appear when Apple says:“To keep only the stored information that is useful to the user, WebKit will remove unused service worker registrations after a period of a few weeks. Caches that do not get opened after a few weeks will also be removed. Web Applications must be resilient to any individual cache, cache entry or service worker being removed.”https://webkit.org/blog/8090/workers-at-your-service/That is a huge change! At Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet, and other browsers, a Service Worker registration is not going to be unregistered automatically, and we can rely on being there in the future. That’s why an installed PWA will be able to work offline in the future. But with Apple’s idea of a service worker, there is no guarantee that the service worker or the cache will be available in the future. It might be if the user comes back to the web app within “a few weeks.” I know, the web app should work anyway while online, but we can’t guarantee one of the key concepts of PWAs: offline access.

    1. In addition to using the catalog for the 2017-2018 school year, school performance data for the past three years has been uploaded into the app. Altogether this year, 120 teachers and almost 1,500 students will benefit from this solution in Alba Iulia. With e-album iulia, available on Android and iOS, tourists have access to information about the city's main objectives, and local businesses can hold dedicated campaigns.

    1. We’re working on that. The next supported browser is likely to be Firefox.

Is there an appetite for an app perhaps? EndNote has one, and I use t a lot as part of my digital workflow as I move from phone to tablet, and sometimes desktop. It seems to me that to tether us to a desktop (even if it is a laptop) is becoming somewhat anachronistic these days.

I'm also curious about how accessible hypothes.is is. Can you comment on that? I mean from a WCAG perspective.

    1. On both platforms, your custom JavaScript class can define a run() function that Safari invokes as soon as it loads the JavaScript file. In the run() function, Safari provides an argument named completionFunction, with which you can pass results to your app extension in the form of a key-value object. In iOS, you can also define a finalize() function that Safari invokes when your app extension calls completeRequestReturningItems:completion: at the end of its task. A finalize() function can use items your extension passes in completeRequestReturningItems:completion: to change the webpage as desired.
