What aspects of communication do you think are “common sense?” What aspects of communication do you think require more formal instruction and/or study? What communication concept has appealed to you most so far? How can you see this concept applying to your life? Do a communication self-assessment. What are your strengths as a communicator? What are your weaknesses? What can you do to start improving your communication competence?
Answer each of these questions. Respond to a peer's comment on Question 2, responding on how the communication concept they have noted has also applied to your life in a similar or different way.
-
What anxieties do you have regarding communication and/or public speaking?
Answer this question. Comment on a peer's comment by providing them with a potential strategy.
-
Getting integrated: Evaluate your speaking and listening competencies based on the list generated by the NCA. Out of the skills listed, which ones are you more competent in and less competent in? Which skill will be most useful for you in academic contexts? Professional contexts? Personal contexts? Civic contexts?
-
People can develop cognitive competence by observing and evaluating the actions of others.
What is one example of when you have altered your communication strategy in response to observing or engaging with others? This could be with a client, friend, family member, colleague, or professor. Ex. I know that whenever I ask my spouse something, and they start their answer with "Uhhh...*long pause...", the answer is a hard no.

"I didn't fully understand it at the time, but throughout my time as a freshman at Boston College I've realized that I have the power to alter myself for the better and broaden my perspective on life. For most of my high school experience, I was holding to antiquated thoughts that had an impact on the majority of my daily interactions. Throughout my life, growing up as a single child has affected the way am in social interactions. This was evident in high school class discussions, as I did not yet have the confidence to be talkative and participate even up until the spring term of my senior year."

- In this annotation, I choose to expand on my introduction. Before I explain why I chose the words I did, I should mention that my first draft failed to meet one of the assignment's primary requirements: a "Story like" structure. Finally, I decided to rework my introduction because my first draft did not begin with a clear beginning. Instead, I started by describing the fundamental context of the encounter before detailing my previous experiences. To improve my final edit, I made sure I described my experiences and/or how I felt before they occurred.
- (Major Essay) Ending/Conclusion paragraph. 5
- In my annotation, I addressed the problem of not stating how and why this circumstance benefits me in the future. In the annotation, I continued to describe how hearing other people's ideas and responding to their comments and insights during class discussions will aid me in my career aspirations.

- This annotation consisted of me continuing to do what I've been doing, which is primarily adding more direct experiences. In my draft for this one, I outlined the scenario of the triangle theory, but I did not go into further detail. But it isn’t. This is because over such a long period a message can easily be distorted or altered without this being in any way intended. (This distortion or alteration in the meaning or method of transmission of a message, whether intended or not, is called “noise.”) Languages, both written and spoken, always change. The meanings of symbols are often lost in the passage of time. In fact, most messages are bound so closely to a particular period and place that even a short time later they cannot be understood. Therefore, ensuring that a message created now can be decoded by future generations is highly problematic.
Can symbol that represents one thing change over a long period of time to mean something different?

The results of the study showed that object control motor skills (such as kicking, catching, and throwing a ball), were better in the children who played interactive games.“This study was not designed to assess whether interactive gaming can actually develop children’s movement skills, but the results are still quite interesting and point to a need to further explore a possible connection,” said Dr. Lisa Barnett, lead researcher on the study.“It could be that these children have higher object control skills because they are playing interactive games that may help to develop these types of skills (for example, the under hand roll through playing the bowling game on the Wii). Playing interactive electronic games may also help eye-hand coordination.”
This is a deductive argument because the logical premise which is that video games can improve motion control skills is supported by a logical premises which is the evidence from Dr. Lisa Barnett. This premises leads to the conclusion that video games can improve motor skills.

Webpacker used to configure Webpack indirectly, which lead to a complicated secondary configuration process. This was done in order to provide default configurations for the most popular frameworks, but ended up creating more complexity than it cured. So now Webpacker delegates all configuration directly to Webpack's default configuration setup.

But it is always important to remember that those are not language concepts. Those are community concepts that only exist in our heads and in the names of some library methods.
I'm not sure about this. I get what he's saying and agree that singleton methods are nothing but a naming convention for the more fundamental/atomic construct called instance methods (which indeed are the only kind of method that exist in Ruby, depending how you look at it), but I think I would actually say that singleton methods are language concepts because those methods like
Object#define_singleton_method
, ... are always available in Ruby (without needing to require a standard library first, for example). In other words, I would argue that something belonging in the Ruby core "library" (?) by definition makes it part of the language -- even if it in turn builds on even lower-level Ruby language features/constructs.

Giving peers permission to engage in dialogue about race and holding a lofty expectation that they will stay engaged in these conversations throughout the semester or year is the first of the four agreements for courageous conversation. While initially, some participants may be eager to enter into these conversations, our experience indicates that the more personal and thus risky these topics get, the more difficult it is for participants to stay committed and engaged." "Many North American music education programs exclude in vast numbers students who do not embody Euroamerican ideals. One way to begin making music education programs more socially just is to make them more inclusive. For that to happen, we need to develop programs that actively take the standpoint of the least advantaged, and work toward a common good that seeks to undermine hierarchies of advantage and disadvantage. And that, inturn, requires the ability to discuss race directly and meaningfully. Such discussions afford valuable opportunities to confront and evaluate the practical consequences of our actions as music educators. It is only through such conversations, Connell argues, that we come to understand “the real relationships and processes that generate advantage and disadvantage”(p. 125). Unfortunately, these are also conversations many white educators find uncomfortable and prefer to avoid."
-
"I am also concerned that despite the best of intentions many of us have not considered adequately what social justice means and entails. I worry that social justice may become simply a “topic du jour” in music education, a phrase easily cited and repeated without careful examination of the assumptions and actions it implicates. That can lead to serious misunderstandings."
Tags
- As music educators we do our best to include cultures and introduce new ideas because of what is relevant at the time. Yet we don't go to the next level and dive into the importance of "why" and how we as citizens along with our students can get involved and take positive actions. This may be due to the lack of autonomy in the classroom and/or time to teach in general.
- Having explicit and concise rules for the conversation is important to create a safe space for more participation in the tougher questions. The facilitator has to be consistently doing this.
- This is exactly why I'm taking this class. The phrase Social Justice along with Multiculturalism has changed SO MUCH

I see a 'virtual attribute' as something we're forced to implement when using frameworks, ORMs and the like. Something that lets us inject our code into the path of whatever metaprogramming has been put in place for us. In a simple PORO like this, I don't see how it has meaning; it's just a method. :)

A relatively comprehensive view of Wouter Groeneveld's commonplacing workflow. There are a few bits missing here and there, but he's got most of the bigger basics down that a majority of people seem to have found and discovered.
He's got a strong concept of indexing, search, and even some review, which many miss. There's some organic work toward combinatorial thought, but only via the search piece.
I should make a list of the important pieces for more advanced versions to have. I've yet to see any articles or work on this.

There’s this thing I simply call “365”. With each new year (or sometimes at the end of a notebook, when I feel like it), I make a 2-page spread mind map of things that kept me busy. It’s more or less an analog tag cloud and it’s extremely rewarding to make. You get to browse through previous journals, look at things you’ve written down and actually managed to pull of, and take note of that in one or two words. That creates a thick cloud full of the things that defined you for the last year. It’s actually quite incredible to look at. When I’m done doing that, I try to underline the words that meant more to me than others. Applying the retrospective principles from software development on your own personal life and writing down what made you glad, mad or sad actually helps you do something about that.
This is an example of spaced repetition being done as retrospective and hiding some of the value of making the important things stand out and reviewing them for better long term retention.

For more than a decade, I’ve revisited “this day in history” from my own blogging archive, looking back one year, five years, ten years (and then, eventually, 15 years and 20 years). Every day, I roll back my blog archives to this day in years gone past, pull out the most interesting headlines and publish a quick blog post linking back to them. This structured, daily work of looking back on where I’ve been is more valuable to helping me think about where I’m going than I can say.
Lots more examples of people doing this pattern on their own websites at https://indieweb.org/on_this_day

What I am attempting to do is to highlight a div with a certain id, when It has been referred to by an anchor on another page IE: User clicks link href="qw.html#test", when the page is loaded, then the div with the id="test" is highlighted so that the user can see it clearly.

The main difference is in the flow of how messages are ultimately sent to devices for output. The standard library Logger logic converts the log entries to strings and then sends the string to the device to be written to a stream. Lumberjack, on the other hand, sends structured data in the form of a Lumberjack::LogEntry to the device and lets the device worry about how to format it. The reason for this flip is to better support structured data logging. Devices (even ones that write to streams) can format the entire payload including non-string objects and tags however they need to.
-
There is a similar feature in the standard library Logger class, but the implementation here is safe to use with multiple processes writing to the same log file.

CSS seems like the right place to put visual information. On the other hand, few would argue that image "src" should not be specified as an attribute and the height/width seem as tied to the binary image data as the "src" is.

John Company offers players a new understanding of British history in the eighteenth and nineteenth century that reflects contemporary scholarship on the subject and extensive research into primary documents. John Company attempts to put the critical events of that time in their proper context and show how the imperial experience transformed the domestic culture of Britain. The East India Company lurked behind every building of a textile mill and every bit of wealth in a Jane Austen novel. John Company is an uncompromising portrait of the people who made the Company and the British Empire what it was. It is as frank as it is cutting in its satire. Accordingly, the game wrestles with many of the key themes of imperialism and globalization in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and how those developments were felt domestically. As such, this game might not be suitable for all players. Please make sure everyone in your group consents to this exploration before playing.

I'm not familiar with this term "arguments" used like this. Isn't this more referring to the motivation for this game?

(Ideally the run-time library would treat a pipe in the same way as a console, but it seems that most don't.)
Often/usually treating a pipe/redirect differently is in fact what you want.
Like if you output to a file, you don't necessarily want colors or real-time progress/status outputted along with it: you want just the bare data to be saved, which can then be filtered in useful ways with other standard tools like grep and sed.

If no file is detected (in case, it's being run as part of a script or the command is being piped)
How does it detect that it's being run non-interactively as part of a script?
Is that distinct/different from detecting whether the command is being piped?

In some cases empty can be the simplest replacement for TCL/expect or other similar programming tools because empty:
-
can be easily invoked directly from shell prompt or script
Can't expect / unbuffer / etc. (whatever this is attempting to contrast itself with) be easily invoked directly from shell prompt or script too??
Okay, I guess you have to know more about how
expect
is invoked to understand what they mean. One glance at the examples, comparing them, and all becomes clear:#!/bin/sh empty -f -i in -o out telnet foo.bar.com empty -w -i out -o in "ogin:" "luser\n"
I didn't realize that expect required/expected (no pun intended) to be used in scripts with its own shebang line:
#!/usr/bin/expect spawn telnet foo.bar.com expect ogin {send luser\r}
That does make it less easy/normal to use expect within a shell script.
I was coming to the expect project from/for the
unbuffer
command, which by contrast, is quite easy to include/use in a shell script -- almost the same asempty
, in fact. (Seems like almost a mismatch to haveunbuffer
command inexpect
toolkit then. Or isexpect
command the only odd one out in that toolkit?)

And now there are two versions with the nickname "Second edition": 2018 https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameversion/404596/second-edition 2021 https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameversion/556765/second-edition
and a 3rd edition published prior to the current/new 2nd edition: 2019 https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameversion/486693/third-edition
Confusing all around.
But I think the bottom line is that the 2021 version is in fact the same game and the newest rules tweaks:
- Added a sixth player
- Official variant to play without the quick grab element.
