    1. One of my earliest memories is my family coming down to Boston College to watch a football game. I still have the small BC football that my dad and I played catch with that day. I remember drinking extra hot chocolate for relief on that chilly day in Autumn and cheering with the crowd when the Eagles scored. Little did I know at the time that I would grow up to be an avid fan of professional football and even play the sport myself throughout middle school and high school. Now, when considering a subculture to learn more about here on campus, the football team is the first thing that comes to mind.

This piece of writing is a revision of my one-pager for the profile assignment, which asked us to explain which subculture we were thinking about investigating and how we will go about doing the interviews and field observations. I decided to revise this piece because this one seemed especially bland and impersonal compared other shorter pieces, so I figured it needed the most work. This entire introductory paragraph is a new revision to my one-pager for the profile essay. Especially throughout the beginning part of the semester, one of my weaknesses as a writer was that I was not personal enough. I was taught in high school to write in a formal manner and avoid using the first person at all costs. I think that being more personal in my writing is one of my most significant accomplishments as a writer this semester. Here, this short narrative provides context for why I am interested in the football team as a subculture. Before including this, it was not obvious in this piece why I liked football or cared enough to want to interview the players themselves, so I think adding this introduction helps sets up the rest of the piece.

    1. They patted on each other’s shoulders and called nicknames, sharing the same bottle of water and chatting about everything, from the homework assignments to the crazy party last night. Kyle laughed at John’s silly new hat and John mocked Kyle for his bad throw in the game. They were like little kids making fun of each other until Andrew, the captain, stopped them just like a parent in the family and said he had something to announce.

I didn’t specifically write about how the frisbee team members acted as a family after the game in my first draft. I just wrote one sentence, stating that the team was also like a family after the game without providing any evidence. During the conference, Professor Zimmerman guided me to explain why I portrayed them as a family after the game and asked me to give some specific examples to justify my point. From this instruction, I learned that specific examples benefited the writers to support their claim and allowed the audience to connect themselves into the essay. Thus, I came up with the teammates’ interactions on the way back to the dorm, which was vivid and provided supporting details for my claim that the frisbee team was a family after the game.

The Game Is On by Copyright User. CC-BY 3.0

This site offers many resources in various formats that focus on understanding copyright. The website serves three main functions: first, it aims to help creators understand their rights and options relating to copyright (including using CC licensing); second, it attempts to help users understand the rights, permissions, and exceptions that apply to copyright; finally, resources exist to educate users, with more nuanced and thorough explanations and scenarios. Among the educational resources is a short animated-series, The Game Is On, which is a parody of a Sherlock Holmes case. The series points to and contextualizes many of the common questions and concerns that are linked to copyright and the reasons why it would be important. In addition, the site also has other creative takes on discussing copyright such as “Copyright Myth-Reality Cards,” which call out and debunk some common misconceptions relating to copyright.

    2. I came upon this License Compatibility multiple choice game by Wiki Educator. There are six questions to work through. It's a bit clunky, but it led me to think about CC compatibility with other open licenses. Some of the questions include content covered by GFDL (GNU Free Document License). I was unfamiliar with this license, so I poked around a bit more and found the Remix and Compatibility page Here I learned that "it is not legally permissible to mix-in GFDL content and release the derivative work under a CC BY-SA license, even though these licenses are similar in terms of the intent of the licenses". It would be great to have a short lecture on GFDL in the course so we are aware of the incompatibility in case we are asked this question at our institutions.

And you're clearly a Gaga fan -- as well you should be -- but this story reads like a PR piece. I'm a fan myself, but statements like, 'her music has been considered a game-changer' are matters of opinion. You need reputable sources for an opinion like this (e.g., music legends and most critics have said she is a seminal musician). It will lend it journalistic credibility.

    1. Generalization and Equilibrium in Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs)

      1. generalization of GANs

在只给定training samples 而不知道true data training distribution的情况下,generator's distribution会不会converge to the true data training distribution.

答案是否定的。 假设discriminator有p个parameters, 那么generator 使用O(p log p) samples 就能够fool discriminator, 即使有infinitely many training data。

这点十分反直觉,因为对于一般的learning machines, getting more data always helps.

      2. Existence of equilibrium

几乎所有的GAN papers都会提到GANs' training procedure is a two-player game, and it's computing a Nash Equilibrium.

      3. Diversity of GANs

    1. make leaps into a new future

Not only leaps, but money. As long as video games continue to make money, they will of course will continue to be around. Why would someone not make video games if they are making you billions.

    2. today’s culture are how video games shape our culture into what it is today

Video games have gotten to the point where they are influencers. A recent movie announced, Detective Pikachu, is based on a video game that is based on the mascot of the Pokemon series. That movie will likely do good at the box office, too because so many people, especially younger children, love Pikachu. And it is a reciprocal relationship, where video games reflect our society and culture.

    3. cognizant of the role that violent actions serve

This is a point that comes up in the common "violence and video games" argument. Some will say that the violence helps get a message across, for example in Call of Duty World at War, you could see people's legs being blown off and a soldier writhe in pain and scream if they were burned by a flamethrower. But others say the violence is bad for people.

    4. connection to violence

Video games (some, of course not all of them) do have violence in them. One of my favorite game series to play, Call of Duty, is based around shooting other virtual people or monsters. The violence has not had an impact on me personally, but others could very well see it and be affected by it, and it has been proven to.

    5. a trading card game

Like other video games, Pokemon has become a way for people to make YouTube video careers out of making their channels based around the game and the card game, specifically. For example, UnlistedLeaf is a YouTuber who makes videos about the card game. His latest video has 18,000 views in 13 hours, and he has 1.7 million subscribers.

In the paper the authors reanalyze Hilgard, Engelhardt, and Rouder’s analysis of the publication bias in studies reporting on the effects of video games on children and use multiple different techniques to determine the validity of the studies data.

    1. It’s likely more classrooms will adopt gamification in the future and the lines between education and game will become even more blurred.

Personally, if gamification became more popular, I feel like my attention span would dwindle with normal lectures. I think that there should be some type pf seriousness and "boringness" associated with school. This forces people to push through things that may not be fun or easy, which is a valuable life lesson.

    2. which applies game-world elements to real-world learning situations.

I feel like I have always done a little of this in school with games like jeopardy, but it seems like the gamification they're discussing is more electronic.

    3. Oregon Trail, an educational game created in the ‘70s that gained popularity in the ‘90s, which many consider being the first successful fusion of education and video games.

I've actually never played Oregon Trail but I've heard about it and I did not know that it was an educational game. Funny that even though it's educational, it seems like people don't talk about that aspect.

    1. Free Culture Game by Molle Industria

Source relates to: 1.1. The Story of Creative Commons -"The internet has given us the opportunity to access, share and collaborate on human creations at an unprecedented scale." This resource uses a simple game to demonstrate the concept of a shared, free culture.

Listed last on the resource page, the “game” is designed to help understand the concept of free culture. Created in Australia in 2012, this interactive game is reminiscent of pong; here users chase little light bulbs to keep them available in the “free culture” circle before they are captured by a copyright sweeper. Directions for play were not well outlined, but the purpose of the game is to keep the ideas generated by the small figures inside the shared space by depositing them back in the figures heads before copyright sucks them all up. For the first few minutes of play, I found myself reviewing the concepts of copyright restriction and open access while chasing the small light bulbs (ideas) around the circle. As new ideas were generated, players would join the free culture. As ideas diminished due to copyright sweeps, the players would move to the copyright realm. Gaming is very popular with students, and some libraries have had success in using it for instruction. I see this game as relevant to the coursework as it does give users an opportunity to review basic concepts of copyright and free culture. It may be improved by allowing users to drag and deposit ideas rather than nudge them into place. This process became tedious and frustrating and there was no points collected or progress shown.

New resource: Copyright the Card Game: https://copyrightliteracy.org/resources/copyright-the-card-game/ This interactive game was designed to help both researchers and librarians develop copyright literacy by turning a sometimes dry subject into something fun. The resource (available under a CC-BY-NA-SA license) features cards representing copyright works, usages/restrictions, licenses and educational exceptions and allows players to better understand how CC licenses are used in practice by applying them to real life situations.

    1. The best way to assign grades properly is to collect evidence of a student's accomplishments so the teacher will have access to ample information before deciding whether to dish out an A, B, C, D, or F to a student.

I think this is super important. Sometimes students will mess up on a test or quiz but overall have been doing really well in the class. This should always be taken into consideration because it is not fair if one little mistake ruins a whole entire grade. My teacher for my field placement will let students redo some of their assignments or quizzes that they got bad grades on just because sometimes their head isn't in the game but she knows they know the material. I think this is a good thing of her to do because it gets the students to not only think harder about the assignment to learn more, but it also gives them a chance to prove themselves.

    1. Getty Images When I walked in the front door of the mayor’s office, I had noticed a mud-spattered white Yukon parked outside. As I was driving to my next interview, I looked in the rearview mirror and noticed the white Yukon again. I drove aimlessly, crisscrossing streets from one end of town to the other. Everywhere I turned, the white Yukon appeared. I was being followed. When I turned the tables and followed the car back, it raced off. We played cat and mouse like that for more than an hour until I finally got a good glimpse of the driver: It was a middle-aged woman with curly, red hair who had a cell phone stuck to her left ear. The cat-and-mouse game started to feel a little dangerous, so I left town for a couple hours. On my way back into Sibley, the same car passed me on the highway. This time, the chubby man from the Lantern was driving. He smiled and waved.

This personal encounter is used as a transition from the lobster to the bigger picture story of the conspiracy type events in the town

    1. Dietz (1998) examined the depictions of women in a sample of the best-selling video games in 1995 and created a coding schema for describing the different ways women were depicted in the game. Of the games she examined, 41% had no women at all (playable or non-playable) and 28% of the games had sexualized representations of women. Of women present in the games, the most popular depiction of them was of the “damsel in distress” trope seen commonly in television and cinema. Women were also rendered in a curvaceous way, with particular attention on the shape of the body and hips as well as the form of the breasts. Dietz summarizes her research by observing that children and teenagers may inter-nalize these representations into their own understanding of gender.

    1. some gamers bemoan the fact that there are any un-sexualized female characters in gaming at all on Reddit threads or in YouTube videos

      game faqs about lara croft

    2. “Sexiness is often used in gaming as an excuse for men to play and enjoy playing a female character,”

this is said by Hammer and should be used in conjunction with Fornite and how that stipulation is not the same. Especially because in F, most characters use female characters because of the nature of the game itself-- fun, free for all, free expression, etc.

    1. depicted in tight pants and midriff-baring tops, and people asserted that this meant the focus was not on her strength, but on her sexuality.

Game creators are predominantly male and because of this we have their discourse on woman being presented in video games. Yes some would say there are women who look like this, but how they are created says a lot about how men see women.

    1. George Catlin, born in 1796, demonstrated a life-long interest in the American Indian, as a painter, explorer, and author. His efforts on behalf of the Plains Indians arose from a concern that "the tribes of red men of North America, as a nation of human beings, are on their wane; that 'they are fast travelling to the shades of their fathers, toward the setting sun;' and that the traveler who would . . . see these people in their native simplicity and beauty, needs be hastily on his way to the prairies or Rocky Mountains, or he will . . . see them only as they are now seen on the frontiers, as a basket of dead game, — harassed, chased, bleeding and dead; with their plumage and colors despoiled."

This information about the artist also could have been a better place to start. The way the curator began his text was very confusing! A little more context, like this information on the artist, would have been helpful to start with.

    1. Men like Blazkowicz's father. Men like those who marched with torches in Charlottesville. That's what's truly scary about Nazis: They're not just video game villains like aliens or zombies. They're something we can become when we're not paying attention. It is something that is already in our society.

Relate to paragraph about Rip. It is men, that walk the streets everyday, buy groceries, and walk their dogs that do these monstrous acts.

    1. Wentworth Recap This past Saturday, the mens rugby team played their final game of the fall season in a matchup with Wentworth, a team that the Skyhawks had already played previously in their season. In their last engagement, Wentworth outplayed the Skyhawks, beating them by 30. This time around, the Skyhawks weren’t so easily defeated, throttling Wentworth 47-29. With the season coming to an end, Stonehill played a more relaxed style of play, not forcing the ball down the field, but instead playing newer players to get them more experience. Many players who generally didn’t get too much playing time played for the majority of the game, proving that the younger and less experienced players on the Skyhawks can still get the job done. Going into halftime, Stonehill was trailing Wentworth by just a few points, but their season wasn’t going to end on a loss. When asked about the atmosphere in the halftime huddle, freshman Anthony Poente said “At halftime we were down, but we didn’t give up. We pretty much said that we weren’t ending our season this way and went out there to finish on a good note.” They did just that, coming out and outplaying Wentworth on both sides of the field.

You need to break up these massive walls of text. Can you go into more detail on the game and tell a story?

    1. "The gaming that I see is where people are blocking generic entry by restricting access to the doses," Gottlieb said Tuesday. "It's a pervasive problem."

it is sad that it can be called a game. Celgene is literally playing God by deciding who can live by charging so much.

    2. companies game the system by taking advantage of certain rules and laws," FDA Commissioner

I am pretty sure Celgene is not the only company who knows about rules of this game, and they all know how to take advantage of certain rules and laws, which makes everything legal. By saying this, it means that it's harder to break the company down by rules and legality, and FDA is also aware of this.

    3. "One of the barriers to competition that concerns me the most is when companies game the system by taking advantage of certain rules and laws," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in early May. "They exploit loopholes in our system to delay generic entry. In these ways, they extend a drug's monopoly beyond what Congress intended."

If companies are exploiting loopholes in patent laws shouldn't congress change them. Oh wait, Citizens United... get the money out of policy making.

    1. Celgene's multipronged strategy of reducing its dependence on Revlimid by launching new hematology drugs is a smart one. However, the company also has other ways of replacing revenue that will be lost after generic rivals begin taking away market share from Revlimid.

If we ever think that they are giving this game, we are wrong. Celgene just gives up Revlimid, does not mean that they give up everything. They have plans to make up loss from Revlimid. It is not that simple like what we wee and what they announced.

    2. Celgene will defend its patents against all potential generic rivals "until conditions are acceptable to settle." He insisted that the biotech won't give up even one month of continued revenue from Revlimid if it doesn't have to do so.

As long as there is any potential generic rival, Celgene will "destroy" them all, and the term "until conditions are acceptable to settle" is like when there is no more potential virals for them, and when they are well-prepared for another game after Revlimid, which they have tools and know how to defense legally to have a full protection shelf.

    3. Alles said that Celgene will defend its patents against all potential generic rivals "until conditions are acceptable to settle." He insisted that the biotech won't give up even one month of continued revenue from Revlimid if it doesn't have to do so.

They want to make sure that they will be fully protected and ahead of the game before they settle, that way they will have alternative drugs ready to market instead of Revlimid.

    1. Video games can also cause seizures to people who have epilepsy when a video game like Super Mario Maker has bright flashy colors most people with epilepsy shouldn’t play that game or they will most likely have a seizure so its best if people with epilepsy stay away from those types of games and stick to less flashy games like Minecraft: Story Mode (”Seizures” par. 2)

This is your most focused and precise paragraph.

    1. . For Hellblade, that meant replicating Senua’s psychosis in a convincing and sensitive way,

I really must pick this game up on PSN this Christmas. Although I never played Hellblade :Senua's Sacrifice I have read about it seems to be a unique and breaks new ground when treating of severe mental illness', such as schizophrenia, in a sensitive and accurate manner. (I think the studio when made it closed down recently which, if true, is very sad. )

    2. but the trouble was that they designed a lot of the game with no narrative in mind.”

I've noticed this is common within the games industry. Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma design the game mechanics of each Zelda game first and then build the narrative around the gameplay mechanics.

    3. I actually never knew Terry Pratchett's Daughter is a video game writer. My girlfriend is a massive Discword fan and from her I learned about the Discworld universe and Terry's witty and sardonic writing style. I always thought someone like Terry would make an excellent contributor to video game narrative so it's fascinating to see that his Daughter is carrying the torch for her late Father.

    4. They designed the visuals of the world, the mechanics, how Faith moves through the world, the parkouring aspect, what Faith looked like, what the other characters looked like, with no narrative in mind.

For me, the first thing I would look at in terms of creating a game would be the narrative, as the mechanics can be done easily. To think of a good, gripping story-line that grabs peoples attention isn't easy. Most of the time I would continue playing a game because of the narrative, because I want to know what happens next or how it ends.

    5. “I would have liked to have done things like playing more with her PTSD, maybe having things like twisted versions of sequences of the first game that you have to replay, because she’s always replaying them in her head, and they end in different ways that you didn’t see in the first game, and trying to reflect aspects of PTSD,”

PTSD is something that a lot of people go through and it isn't particularly highlighted, especially not in games. I think it would have not only been a lot more interesting to show this side of Lara. But, it would have been a great way to connect to a wider audience (people who have gone through trauma). Furthermore, it would be a great way to underline PTSD and maybe a educational way of overcoming it. I would also like to see a different side of Lara that doesn't need a male figure for motivation in her life.

    1. the maternal tapeappears to be set off when a mother sees her hungry baby,

I can completely relate to this. As you all know, I have a 6-month old baby, well I also work in a restaurant where a lot of families come in to eat and they have small children as well. Just like when my baby is crying I go over and comfort her in whatever ways she needs. The type of restaurant I work at, our customers become really personally involved (our town in the size of a peanut practically), so sometimes I rock the baby to sleep or simply play a game like "miss marry mack" with them. My maternal instinct kicks in to keep the baby from getting upset.

    1. In sport, for example, we feel helpless against the odd bounces of the ball, the game-changing wind gust that suddenly arises, and the many other random events that can alter the outcome of a game or match {though, of course, for many people these are not matters of chance, but of

It's frustrating to feel helpless when it comes to what you choose to place your faith in. No one should feel helpless in regards to getting to chose what religion to practice.

    1. Do you have rituals that you perform on a regular basis?

When I played baseball in high school I would take gum and layer it between other gum and then lay it between my glove and my hand. I would then chew it during the game. A lot of people find gum habits gross, but it made me a better ball player.

    2. be broken-Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played streak. Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive games for the New York Yankees before being forced to quit because of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)-now known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease." Ripken tied the record on September 5 and broke it on September 6. When the September 6 game became official-after the top of the fifth inning was complete-the Baltimore crowd gave Ripken a standing ovation that stopped the game for twenty-two minutes. Eventually, Ripken took a jog around the entire field slapping outstretched hands and waving to the crowd. The day before, in the game in which he tied Gehrig's record, Ripken hit a home run ball that was caught by Michael Stirn. Stirn sold the ball to an unnamed businessman three months later for $41 , 736. The businessman attempted to sell the ball to Walmart for $1 million, a figure he deemed reasonable because of the price a buyer paid for the ball Eddie Murray hit for his 500th home run ($500,000).120 Walmart declined to purchase the ball, but the asking price (and the selling price of Murray's home run ball) is indicative of the value many place on such an important relic of the game. Many such relics find their way to the Hall of Fame and are displayed for visitors to view and revere. In addition to its "holy" relics, the game of baseball also has sacred space. Certain stadia are revered because of their longevity or because of events that have taken place there. Wrigley Field, the home field of the Chicago Cubs, is widely regarded in its entirety as sacred space by baseball fans of all teams. (See Fig. 2.2) Sometimes parts of stadia are intentionally set apart as shrines to commemo-rate players or teams. There is the well-known Monument Park in Yankee Stadium that honors great Yankees players of the past. When the Yankees moved into the Fig. 2.2 Exterior of Wrigley Field opening night 2015. 36 Understanding Sport as a Religious Phenomenon new Yankee Stadium in 2009, they moved Monument Park to the new stadium. When the Atlanta Braves moved from Fulton County Stadium to Ted Turner Field in 1997, Fulton County Stadium was demolished except for the section of fence over which Hank Aaron hit his 715th career home run surpassing Babe Ruth and becoming Major League Baseball's "Home Run King." That section of fence (along with a commemorative plaque) serves as a shrine to honor Hank Aaron. It is, indeed, sacred space. Like most sports arenas, the field area is off-limits to fans who must remain in the stands. Any fan who enters the field area without permission violates a taboo and is usually arrested by security personnel and removed from the stadium completely. Baseball's field is unique, however. Price argues that the pitcher's mound represents the cosmic mountain that serves as the center of the baseball cosmos.121 It is where play begins, which is consistent with the idea that the center of the universe repre-sents the birth of the universe, or the navel. Price sees this navel-ompha/os in the Greek-as the "rubber" that sits on top of the cosmic mountain: The pitcher's rubber is located at the top of the pitcher's mound, a twelve-inch-high rise that provides the only topical elevation in the field. Rising above the contour of the field, the pitcher's mound corresponds to the cosmic mountains of old and its stature as such is reinforced by the presence of the rubber at its crest. In the world or cosmos of baseball, the omphalos is located at the top of the cosmic mountain. As the mythical center of the field, the pitcher's mound is the point at which creation of the game begins. The pitcher, who starts play by throwing the ball to the batter, must stand on top of the pitcher's mound and must keep his foot on the rubber until he has released the ball. There is, then, an umbilical connection between the creative activity of the pitcher (as a high priest) and the omphalos itself.122 There are many more examples of how the space of a baseball stadium may be seen as sacred including the monuments-statues, commemorative plaques, and larger-than-life pictures of important moments in a team's history-that are erected to honor heroes (saints) and heroic moments of the team.

This is all very meaningful to me. Baseball has always meant a lot to me and if I do have children my plan and hope is that they will enjoy the spot too. When the pitcher is on the mound its a sacred moment. Something spectacular could be on the other side of that pitch, we just have to wait and find out. Something that they didn't mention is what the fans have to do in the stands. No one is suppose to stand or move during a pitch. Between pitches you can move and get a drink. But during the pitch, you can't move in the stands. Bad luck and rude!

    3. These are all material objects that are a part of the game of baseball and a part of the experience of the fans, especially those fans who attend the games in person.

I've been a baseball fan and player my entire life and when I came to SU I came to play college ball and also sing in the conservatory. My sophomore year I was forced to choose one reality over another. Sporting events especially Mets games are sacred to me. My family and I go to many mets games a year and I will always treasure those memories. I collect mets memorabilia, so I can attest to the material objects that are baseball themed are very very valuable.

    1. . By playing the excellence game in the same playground as large commercial publishers, SciELO increasingly finds itself threatened by direct competition. This trend could signal the beginning of a pernicious process: one could imagine that Latin American countries, with great expense and effort, would work toward improving their journals, only to discover that successful journals get captured by large commercial publishers.

This would be very sad. This is why not only the issue of access needs to be addressed, but also the core issue of how science is being evaluated. Maybe it will take a huge social movement within academia to make this happen....

    1. Bex had always shyly asked to play the part of the ClockWork, and dutifully tick tocked her way through the game.

I like how this bit of exposition characterizes Bex as being a character who likes to follow the rules and the expected.

    1. 1908 Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote the ballpark hit single, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”. performed by Edward Meeker This song included the famed lyrics, “Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks”. The interesting fact about this song is, both Jack and Albert wouldn’t actually see a baseball game for a number of years after they wrote the song. This tune is played across the country at every baseball game to this day.

You need to move this to marketing.

    1. 'Ali. Since it took him two weeks to visit Bouazizi, however, it only served to remind them of bin 'Ali's true nature.

This is interesting and can be related to Trump and how he deals with certain issues. Trump tweeted about the shooting in Pittsburg but then tweeted a few hours later about the red sox game showing his "true self" and showing her doesn't really care about victims.

    2. Uprisings such as the one Tunisia experienced in 2010 are exceptional, not commonplace, occurrences in world history.

Despite these protests and uprising being exceptional, especially in Egypt and Tunisia, I love how Diab was able to present many of the characters as just normal people in the subtle interactions he chooses to present on screen. Two of them that come to mind, first include the interactions between the Egyptian young men on the pro-army side. At one point one of them even asks if his hair is fine, even through all this calamity, and of course the other friends ruffles his hair up. I feel like this interaction and their constant friendly bickering is a mirror image for many of the real friendships of the viewers. Another scene was when they talk about the soccer rivalry of Al Ahly vs. Zamalek, literally the biggest thing ever in Egypt (We just ask for your name, ID, then Al Ahly or Zamalek, lol) . It felt for a second like everyone, from either side, were just a group of guys sitting around at a bar or coffee shop watching the game. I think reminding viewers the how of a ‘regular Joe’ the people who protesting were, not only makes the movement that much more powerful, but also make the film itself that much more impactful. I know Diab mentioned one of the major MB leaders, the doctor in the other van, but I feel if the film was focused more on the more influential leaders, the audience wouldn’t be able to connect with of the characters and their cause as well. What do you guys think would have changed if Diab chose to focus on these personalities instead?

    1. Mobile Based User-Centered Learning Environment for Adult Absolute Illiterates

This study reviewed the education of absolute illiterates globally. It was based on the creation of game-based learning (GBL) which provides a user-friendly learning platform with little cost and little intimidation for the learner. The research also identified 60% of the world's illiterate population residing in rural areas with little access to computers and educational centers. The GBL environments created real world environments that allow learners to practice real-life scenarios in familiar surroundings using 3-D technology. The study also adapted a English language program to meet the needs of various languages. The context of the game is a farmer and a wife then acquire items and count them in their native language. The numbers used in counting are spoken and the game produces the correlating number so the learner becomes familiar with the written form of the letter. In conclusion, the participants identified that the mobile learning was more beneficial than PC applications due to unreliable electrical service at home. The mobile system was also available on demand.and applied to participants real-life usage.

    1. First Day of Practice: Do’s and Dont’s Today was Stonehill Basketball’s first day of practice and I was able to pick up on some things that may be helpful to some people interested in playing college basketball. Here are some Do’s and Dont’s of practice. Use these tips in your seasons because all practices are ran basically the same, but the only difference is the intensity at different levels of competition. Do’s and Dont’s  Do play hard as soon as practice starts Do not wait for the middle to get things going Talk loud and be intense as long as possible Do make mistakes Do not practice to stay the same, always work to become better. Understand that practice is where mistakes are meant to be made. Do Compete against your teammates. That is the only way to get better Do not take it personally when a teammate begins to get very competitive. Nothing is better than hard competition to prepare a team for games. Do ask questions Do not wait until the middle of the game to being asking questions that should have previously been asked It is true that many times when you ask a question someone else was also wanting to ask the same question. Do work on new moves Do not wait until the game to tryout new moves because they may not work The more you mess up in practice the less you will mess up in the games Do try to impress Do not assume that you need to stay complacent in practice Whenever you have the chance try to move up the ladder in terms of your position on the team. Practice is the time where you show the coaches what you can do.

Try to rework this bulleted list in paragraph form. This kind of post won't draw readers in.

    1. This post I want to take the time to interview another freshman player, Adam Freese, and ask him questions about what it means to him to play for Stonehill, and what being a college athlete takes. SJ: What keeps you going everyday even though each practice is hard, and intense? AF: “Wanting to get better, and my determination to get better. I also like to take on challenges head on.” SJ: How do you prepare for a game or scrimmage? Any pregame rituals? AF: “I need to get a good nights sleep, and I eat a nice meal, and I make sure that I keep my head focused on the game and the task ahead of me. I avoid all distractions throughout the day.” SJ: How do you prepare yourself for a season in general? How are your offseason workouts? AF: “I understand that the season is going to be long and rough, but I always mentally prepare myself for it first. I understand that adversity is going to hit, and I find ways to overcome adversity on an everyday basis. I also know that the work that I put in during the offseason will pay off during the regular season. So, by giving my offseason workouts everything that I have I know that the effort I put in will pay off during my regular season.” SJ: What is your favorite part about being a college athlete? More specifically a Stonehill Skyhawk? AF: “Simply put, living out the reality of playing sports, and going to school for free is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. At Stonehill we take sports seriously, and the love for competition excites me at Stonehill, and that is why I love being a Stonehill Skyhawk. SJ: What are the big differences that you have noticed between high school basketball, and college basketball? AF: “College basketball is a much more intense, and fast paced game than high – school basketball. College basketball is also much more time – consuming as well. SJ: How do you recover, after a game or practice? AF: Icing is critical for me whether it is before or after any main event. I always take precautionary measures after any practice as well.

Again, try to avoid the QAQA format for interviews. Turn this into a conversation, and then make it a story based on the conversation. Are you planning more interviews?

    1. From my experience many college coaches are very similar in terms of what they are looking for from their players. I want to discuss this post, what exactly my coach says during practice, and the things that he stresses that I feel every player should know about. Play Hard Pay close attention to detail Play within your own limits (Do not do to much)   Play Hard: Many coaches stress the importance of working because there are mistakes that are made throughout the game that can be made up by simply giving effort. If you miss an assignment, and get beat off the dribble it is expected that you give it your all and recover to stop your man. By not showing any effort your assignment will simply score, and make you look bad. My target audience for this assignment is mainly people who are looking to try and play college basketball or simply improve upon their game. The one thing that people do not take into account is that there are hundreds of people who are talented, but playing hard will take the most talented players to the next level. Pay Smart: Even though I previously stressed how important working hard is once in college that just simply is not enough at this level. Over the course of one practice the team is responsible for learning a handful of defensive principles, and different offensive sets. If you were not paying attention to practice, then the next day when you do not know a set, or mess up a defensive assignment coaches will get on you about it. Every player can play hard, but the ones’s that get the most minutes are able to play hard while also executing the scout perfectly. One quote that our coach has bought to our attention recently is a quote by Brad Stevens that says: “When considering the consequences of not doing the little things, you realize there are no little things.” If a coach gives you a small task, or a small pointer many people do not take these seriously enough and it will show in games. Take these things seriously, and take pride in doing the little things then you will notice that you will be ahead of your teammates. Play Within your Limits: In high school many people are able to get away with trying new moves, or shooting bad shots that they think may work well in a game. In college this kind of play quickly gets shut down because nine times out of ten when a player tries to do too much it will not work out well. If you are a player who hits a lot of shots, then don’t try and all of a sudden start playing in the post. If you are a player that works well inside do not try shooting threes, and contested two. Do what you do best, and you will thrive as a college player. Coaches need people who understand what they can bring to the table, and will consistently bring that everyday. Making your coach happy means that you are doing something right. So try your best to please your coach whenever possible.

This is a good use of outline forecasting your subpoints, but edit carefully. I"m seeing filler words like things used frequently. Try to avoid qualifiers like I feel, I believe, etc. Could your outline link to points in your post?

    1. Stretch Stretching will not only prevent injuries, but it is the easiest way to prolong one’s career. Many people I know in their late 30’s believe that if they took more time to stretch while they were younger they would still be playing. Stretch and Roll out: Hamstrings Quads Calves IT Bands Upper body Lift Lifting is a great to prevent injuries if done right. Strengthening core, lower body, and upper body are essential for a player who wants to stay on top of their game. Below are a few lifts for people who do not know where to start. This reminds me of WP3 and the economic aspect of the environmental sustainability issue. It is true that we must change the economic aspect, but I do question how we are able to do so, as we've seen with many of the issues that we researched that viable solutions often don't play out in favor of conservation due to the pursuit for profit.

In summary then, IVANHOE can be used in a variety of ways as a competitive, game-like environment, as a collaborative study and research situation, or as a context in which players strive to achieve their own individual goals. In a classroom setting, IVANHOE could encourage students to improve bibliographical and research skills in one round and critical-reading skills in the next. Individual students could decide which of several interpretive skills they wish to improve in a round of play, or they could consult with a teacher to set these goals. For more mature players, various competitive or collaborative situations might be imagined to promote specific types of critical reflection and scholarly research. IVANHOE can be played in a game mode with points, scoring, and competitive interactions. It can also be used for non-competitive collaborative work within a community of scholars or in classroom activities.

I'm trying to think of the reason why she called the poem "Solitaire." I know solitaire as a card game, in reference to other card games, and the gem known as a solitaire. You could connect this with the line she says "shakes wrought dice-cups in Pagan temples" (5) in reference to card games.

    1. “Faites vos jeux, Messieurs.”

place your bets (in french)-- further conveys this sense that war is nothing more than a game, or treated as such, and works to convey a sense of carelessness on the parts of those who make decisions in wartime

    1. Kaepernick saying he “sacrificed everything” – simply because he is currently unable to play a game and receive millions of dollars to do so – illustrates the so-called privilege that ardent national anthem protest supporters accuse others of having.

Using irony to further justify the logical aspect of this argument.

    1. Introduction to the Blog… For this blog, I will be covering and blogging the topic of Stonehill Boys Rugby. In the world of modern American sports, rugby, which is extremely popular worldwide, is often overlooked and overshadowed by its more popular counterpart, football. My goal for this semester is to not only popularize Stonehill rugby, but to popularize the sport in general. I hope to expose people to the sport and help readers understand it better. This blog will start off with the basic rules and overview of the Stonehill rugby team, but after that every post will be about the team’s most recent game or looking ahead in the season. The big news this year is that the team is good and looking to make a playoff push. Personally, I look forward to the playoffs especially since everyone is so much more invested rather than a regular season game. At the end of each post, I’m looking to discuss happenings in international rugby and cover some scores there, but not enough as to overshadow the Stonehill team.

Time to move this content to a dedicated "about me" page.

    1. For this post, I sat down with a friend of mine, Anthony Poente, to ask him some questions about his rugby experience, his adjustment to the rugby world, and his overall thoughts of the rugby season. Q: When did you get into rugby? A: This year, I had played football throughout my life so I thought since the two sports are similar I would give it a shot. Q: Why did you get into rugby? A: My cousin came to Stonehill and he played rugby and loved it, so I thought that I would give it a try. Like I said before, I had played football and loved it and since its a varsity only sport here I thought I would try and do the closest thing to it. Q: Since you had played football before, were you surprised at the differences between the two sports? A: Yes, theres a lot more fundamental things that are incorporated into both sports, like tackling, picking up the ball, and the pace of the game is a lot faster. Without a knowledge of the rules, it is much harder to play rugby than one would expect. When playing football, it is a much easier sport to pick up rather than rugby Q: How much did football help you with rugby? A: The way I look at it, football prepared me mentally, like to know what to expect when you are getting hit or going for a tackle. But everything else in rugby I learned from practicing and watching the game. It has many more aspects than you would expect out of a game that seems so similar. Q: For the spring sevens season, how do you think Stonehill will do against the competition? A: I have high hopes for our team. We’ve been practicing pretty hard this year and I think that if the sevens carry that same mentality over they will have a successful season.

Try to avoid the QAQA format for interviews. As much as possible, make it a conversation and then translate that conversation into a story or profile of the person. You needn't use every question and can play with the order as you need to.

    1. I am a grad student. I sought help for my mental illness last year. I go to one of those 'top 10' universities in the US. Grad life is hard, I do not have a lot of support from my family, and I am socially awkward. As far as coursework and work was concerned, I was struggling to organize my work and time. I used to be a huge fan of services like Trello, RescueTime, Evernote, all those technologies out there for managing and organizing. I used notepad or MS Word for documentation and writing reports. I wrote code in Visual Studio and Anaconda's Spyder (no offense to Anaconda). That's what my friends were doing, but I guess it was not enough for me, because I tend to get very nervous when there is a lot of work, and the smallest things can push me off the edge. I need everything to be organized and neat. I discovered Emacs in May 2018. I was in a terrible place then. I thought I was never going to recover. I was just trying out different text editors to optimize my workflow when I found Emacs. The first thing that completely amazed me was org-mode: agenda, the tree structure, org-babel, everything! Then I started writing all my code in Emacs, for all my coursework and work in machine learning, game development, etc. I learned how to store links to particular lines in huge code files, so that I can access them quickly, and continue work where I had left off. I also journal, I have been journaling for 4 years, that is how I deal with my problems. I have tried many software packages for journaling, and none of them come close to what I can do in Emacs. Now I can also write lisp scripts for doing simple routine processes that would make my workflow much simpler, so that I don't have to worry about small details and concentrate on more important things. I have recovered significantly from my depression. I still feel terrible, but I can handle things with more ease because Emacs reduces a lot of unnecessary cognitive load. I wonder what I would have been if I had decided not to explore Emacs. It's true what they say, any text editor can save your files, only Emacs can save your soul.

about emacs helping to recover from depression, wow!

    1. always limited by time, space, and resources

actually. That is what life is. It is the limitation of time, space and resources. Creativity, problem-solving, design are all reactions to a limitation of one or all of the above.

Actually, I believe that is why Minecraft is so popular. They actually limited what kids could do by making the blocks only square and only a certain dimension. Therefore creating a problem to work around. This has created better designs not worse.

To not have a limitation of time, space or resources makes a game or anything meaningless and no fun because humans love to problem-solve.

    2. mahjong

I had to look up Mahjong. I wish you could just click on it and it would tell you what it was.

I have actually played Mahjong quite a few times. I never knew it used to be a physical game.

    3. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

This ultimately can turn into a product where teachers are offered sets of game-based learning that complies with common core standards

    4. After students play, teachers can refer back to the game’s particular way of conceptualizing an idea

I think this is a great way to go about combining games with learning. Teach the children a concept, then let them play a game were that concept is reinforced.

    5. but that doesn’t mean they understand how it relates to the other activities. Take the time to explain why you’ve chosen the game

Full realization and understanding of where a piece of material fits in can help allow the user to get the bigger picture

    6. In addition, most game developers recognize that professional development is one of the biggest obstacles to adoption, so they often provide video tutorials and other materials for teachers on their websites.

Support is widespread, the ed-tech world is expanding and learning resources are available

    7. sword and sorcery action role-playing game, is set in a rugged, Scandinavian-inspired wilderness that echoes Norway’s natural landscapes. Staaby leverages this connection to teachNorwegian romantic nationalism, a 19thcentury independence movement that set out to document uniquely Norwegian cultural elements and natural settings to affirm their national identity. Like their historic predecessors, students explore the wilds ofSkyrimin search of features and landscapes that aligned with the aesthetics of romantic nationalism. “Video games do not give you the answers up front. You have to look for traces of national romanticism inSkyrim. It does not come by itself,” explained Staaby, identifying a video game’s potential for an active and participatory approach to learning.

TES would not been on my list of games that would be educational. It is interesting that Tobias links TES5 to Norwegian culture. But TES5 was about a fantasy world and even the lore in the game was scattered between fictional cultures.

    8. ating the play of the game within a curricular sequence.

situating a game inside a curricular sequence. What if you situate a curricular sequence inside a game?

    9. in which students experience what it feels like to be unjustly accused of a crime.

Yeah an engaging video game is probably the best way ( outside of living the actual experience) to develop empathy towards others.

    10. MindShift Guide To Digital Games + Learning\ Page 31 of 41STATE STANDARDS AND TEACHABLE MOMENTS“It all starts connecting,”

The game and the real life applications interact and connect and that is when the learning has really paid off.

    11. Forty-five percent of teachers reported that insufficient time is a barrier to implementing game-based teaching strategies.

I could especially see this as an issue for long-form games.

    12. Don’t allow the game to tell you how to assess, make sure it strengthens your current practices

The teacher still has to remember that they are in charge of the learning in their classroom, not the technology or the game.

    13. it still feels like shopping in a department store:

It isn't going to be super easy to implement game-based learning into your classroom, but it will be worth it

    14. he game-based formative assessments address the needs of both students and teachers for reliable and valid real-time actionable data within a motivating learning environment.”

This is a really cool idea

    15. playtesters is that this role also requires them to articulate what makes the game fun, engaging, and meaningful, helping them develop critical thinking and metacognitive skills

I really like this idea!! I think it makes it more fun whether it is successful or not. If the game completely fails, it would still be funny to see that for kids today.

    16. The game could be digital or non-digital

Do you think that students today would be more interested and excited to play digital games over non-digital simply because of the society we are living in?

    17. including video tutorials that show how to roll out a game in the classroom, manage its gameplay, and assess student learning

I did not know this was a thing but I think that could be really beneficial to people who want to start this game-based learning in their classroom.

    1. hey also connect with other students in the school community, both to share exper-tise and to play together via the building of solutions.

helps the students feel like they are participating in the game culture and they are important/ their content matters within the community

    2. Squire reports elsewhere that engagement in this history-based game simulation motivated some participants to ask questions

I suppose that when people are interactive or feel a sense of control in the environment, they tend to ask more questions compared to textbooks. Students are constantly told that textbooks hold the correct answers, so students don't feel the drive to ask questions if the book supposedly has the answers.

    3. the interactivity of a dynamic system.

I don't know why, but the sentence makes me think of muscle memory. Similar to how a person may forget how to say the controls to a game, but once they pick up the controller they're fine.

    1. “So while it’s already assumed that the women can feel, they just need to be made strong by terror and violence. Men: they’re already strong, so they’re need to be made to feel by terrible things happening to women in their lives.”

I've played Tomb Raider and have always seen Lara as a role-model.I never thought about if she would have gone on adventures without her fathers influence so I can understand why Pratchett didn't want the father to be in the game as much as he is.

    2. “The trouble was that they designed a lot of the game with no narrative in mind,” Pratchett said.

I think a game's narrative is more important then game play to some extent because it keeps the game interesting.

    1. Traditional Marxism finds it impossible to imagine the self-abolition of the proletarian class because it treats labor as a category outside of history, rather than one produced by capitalism itself. By making labor into a category of capitalism, Postone does not mean to make the nonsensical claim that previous societies have never involved labor, but rather that these societies did not conceive of what we call labor as labor, as expressions of an undifferentiated productive capacity. This conception only arises with the general commodification of human activity, once work becomes something bought and sold on the open market. Peasants did not conceive of their work in the fields as fundamentally separate from work in the kitchen garden, from work fixing their domicile, taking care of children, or hunting game. Nor was the line between these activities and play or diversion so firmly drawn. Postone, therefore, attempts to denaturalize and estrange labor in much the same way that LeGuin denaturalizes prison in the passage described previously. Why is it that spending time with a child in one context might be something you do for fun, in another a familial obligation, and in yet another paid work? What would it mean to live in a society in which nothing people did took the form of labor, but merely appeared as a spectrum of voluntary activity, some of it pleasant, some of it tedious, but none of it a job?
    1. Ifwe observe or even anticipate that aspecific person is doing better than us atsome ability then we may be motivated toboost our performance level.

This really relates to competitive people. I know i am extremely competitive and I see just about everything in life a game. Therefore, I always want to be number 1 or the best. I know if i see someone doing better than me, my inner self kicks into to overdrive to do better than the next. There is never any satisfaction from it either.

    1. Perhaps part of the confusion - and you say this in a different way in your little memo - is that the C/C++ folks see OO as a liberation from a world that has nothing resembling a first-class functions, while Lisp folks see OO as a prison since it limits their use of functions/objects to the style of (9.). In that case, the only way OO can be defended is in the same manner as any other game or discipline -- by arguing that by giving something up (e.g. the freedom to throw eggs at your neighbor's house) you gain something that you want (assurance that your neighbor won't put you in jail).

[9] "Sum-of-product-of-function pattern - objects are (in effect) restricted to be functions that take as first argument a distinguished method key argument that is drawn from a finite set of simple names."

    1. current licensing system typically generates works that are redundant (allowing no new character background or plot development),

I agree. Licensing can be very restrictive. It would seem that a collaborative creativity involving mutually beneficial remediation of various creations could be a good way forward. Although Jenkins isn't referring explicitly to phenomena like "fan fiction" or its game/film alternative, it does seem that an iterative approach could benefit all. The fan or alternate media producer would feel validated and invested. The studio/production house benefits from a greater pool of imagination. In many cases fans of media are far more invested, know more, and are in a better position to contribute than the original creators. A network of loosely connected, differently wired creative brains could be a powerful force.

    2. computer owners consume on average significantly more television, movies, CDs, and related media than the general population.

Would be nice to see the sources/reference for this information. From a logical viewpoint, it makes sense, computer users have a device in front of them which makes it a task of milliseconds to find all the information, linkages and layers of a game, film, book, album, piece of theatre or performance. I would extrapolate this even more to mobile device users. In a sense, finding this information on a mobile device, to me at least, feels more like flow, than doing the same thing on a desktop machine. But perhaps Jenkins was referring to all users of digital devices, regardless of screen size.

    3. Transmedia stories aren’t necessarily bad stories; they are different kinds of stories

An interesting case study whose theme runs somewhat tangentially to Jenkins' article was conducted by Wu (2016). Wu references "Scott Pilgrim Vs The World"- originally a comic series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. Wu notes that the use of video game motifs and conventions helps to bridge the gap between the comic world and video game world. Wu, L.Z., 2016. Transmedia Adaptation, or the Kinesthetics of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Adaptation 9, 417–427. https://doi.org/10.1093/adaptation/apw033

    1. While entertainment production information may not be high on many people’s lists of important information, the Internet Movie Database is a vital instrument in keeping track of television, movie, and video game history.

Someday, when facial recognition rules the day, we'll all be able to log into IMDB and see ourselves in other peoples' home videos/movies.

    1. That square is counted as being occupied for the rest of the game (so no piece or spear may move through it

Can we store all queens/spears equally on the board? Do we need a different way of tracking spears vs queens?

    1. Plan S as a bold step that has the potential to be a game-changer in making European science open and setting an example globally on how publicly funded research is published, in particular its requirement that the copyright remains with the author and that licences adhere to the Berlin Declaration.

Support that authors must retain the copyright

    1. udio output was disabled: as such, the sensory input wasequated between human player and agents.

It's interesting that this extra feature is assumed to withhold valuable information from both the agent and humans.

What are people's thoughts on this, would an audio input help the learner? What do we think would work better, adding this to the output of the convolution layer?

When the environment(game) is in a 'loud, high pitch' state watch out!

    1. In the best examples of this game, we see everything that the detective sees, yet we are unable to solve the crime ourselves.

It even says that it is the detectives game and that they have certain abilities that allow them to see and notice things we don't.

    1. But Mike feels that organized team sports fail to teach the critical life skills that he and his friends learned in pickup games they had to referee themselves. They were forced to resolve their own disputes, because if they didn’t, the game would end. Their focus was not on winning and losing, as when adults are in charge, he says, but simply on keeping the game going.

This follows with Mike's concept that kid have to govern their own rules.

    1. The Imitation Game Job van Achterberg

Simulation alone might have opposite of intended effect— participants might end up feeling negatively about the disability being simulated.

However, if framed with an appropriate conversation, the simulation can have positive effects and build empathy

    2. Game Accessibility In 2018 Ian Hamilton
      • AT: single switch. Anything with just a simple on/off switch. Could be a button, tube to blow into, etc (like what Steven Hawking would use!)
      • Consider that cognitive disabilities might be present in addition to physical ones.
      • “Games represent access to recreation, culture, and socializing. The difference between existing and living.”

      Recent advancements:

      • Nintendo Switch introduced color inverting and greyscale options. First time in history every major gaming system has some level of a11y integration!
      • Xbox has adaptive controller which allows you to completely remap controls in any way you want.
      • GameCritic now includes screenshot of what subtitles look like and screenshot of game controls. Allows someone to know whether they’ll be able to play the game.
      • Ubisoft now does FAQs for a11y features in games.
      • EA Sports also surfacing a11y info and publishing manuals in screen reader accessible format
      • Publish a11y info in advance of game release so AT users can decide whether they’ll buy the game ahead of time.
      • Consider addition of “stress free mode” where users can play without worrying about failure (see: Barbarian)
      • Madden 18 added haptics (in addition to preexisting announcer feature) to make the game accessible to blind users
      • Auto camera tracking removes need to use right joystick when walking
      • Customizable subtitles!!!!
    1. From a learning perspective, what is important about video games is not interactivity per se, but thefact that in many games players come to feel a sense of agency or ownership.. . . In good games, playersfeel that their actions and decisions—and not just the designers’ actions and decisions—cocreate theworld they are in and shape the experiences they are having. Their choices matter. What they do matters.

As mentioned in the paragraph above people have became invested in their work (game) and they found it valuable and wish to continue. In many ways I can see how games and learning work well.

      dillajam

    2. o name but a few

They make playing a video game sound hard and specific to certain people. Any kid can learn how. Any normal kid can learn how to play one.

    3. how, if, and why kids were infusing their gamingwith learning, or vice versa.

How can we also set up "game-based" learning opportunities in the classroom where students can work through problems in an entertaining way without needing access to computers etc.

    1. The end game of a surveillance society, from the perspective of those being watched, is to be subjected to whims of black-boxed code extended to the navigation of spaces, which are systematically stripped of important social and cultural clues. The personalized surveillance tech, meanwhile, will not make people less racist; it will make them more comfortable and protected in their racism.
    1. he showed up at the Forum exhausted from moving furniture all day into his family’s new apartment — then scored five goals and added three assists, setting the NHL record for most points in a single game.

This seems crazy, I feel like modern day manager wouldn't even allow this to happen.

    2. “Because I always try so hard to win and had my troubles in Boston, I was suspended. At playoff time, it hurts not to be in the game with the boys. However, I want to do what is good for the people of Montreal and the team. So that no further harm will be done, I would like to ask everyone to get behind the team and to help the boys win from the Rangers and Detroit. I will take my punishment and come back next year to help the club and younger players to win the Cup.”

These players with a temper and who get aggressive while playing don't realize how they let their team down for one little mistake made out of anger during a game.

    3. “What did Campbell do when Jean Béliveau was deliberately injured twice by players from Chicago and New York? No penalty, no fine, no suspension. Did he suspend Gordie Howe of Detroit when he almost knocked out Dollard St. Laurent’s eye two years ago? No!” Richard called the decision against Geoffrion a “farce” and wrote that the “dictator” should “not try to create publicity at the expense of a good fellow like ‘Boom Boom’ Geoffrion just because he is a French-Canadian.”

This shows that it isn't just Richard that has a temper and get aggressive while playing the game of hockey.

    4. “When I’m hit, I get mad and I don’t know what I do,” he confided in one writer. “Before each game, I think about my temper and how I should control it, but as soon as I get on the ice I forget all that.”

Once again this displays his temperament issues while playing hockey.

    5. Richard lowered his head and neck to buttress himself for the collision then straightened

This yet again shows the aggressiveness in the game of hockey that can cause multiple injuries.

    6. Richard presses a towel to the gash on his scalp, which will take five stiches to close. He clutches a stick in his right hand.

This is a very aggressive and dangerous game and it shouldn't be. It should be a fun but kind of competitive game.

    7. You’ve never seen a hockey player like Maurice Richard. Not Crosby. Not Gretzky. Not Orr, Beliveau, Howe. None of them had the talent, the intensity, the will to take over a game like Richard. And none of them meant to their fans what le Rocket meant to Canadien fans.

Richard was very popular to his Canadian fans. It talks about how no other player was like him. His fans even called him "le Rocket."

    1. Bauer said he might demonstrate his neutrality on the subject by lecturing in a referee jersey.

Is this really neutral since it has to do with sports, or could he mean it more towards the fact that referees must be neutral towards both teams during a game?

    2. "Charity has been the function of the church. Now it's the team who is taking charge of the social life, visiting children in hospitals, inviting children to see a game or giving money to charity…

    1. Forexample, individuals trust medical testsless if the results suggest they have adeficiency compared to when the resultssuggest they are healthy.

On Grey's Anatomy you see this a lot, especially with their athletic clients. They go in for a simple fracture and end up having a severe deficiency that could potentially take them out the game. They proceed to disagree with results, leave and then end up returning with a more severe injury due to their deficiency.

    1. We load our obsessions, dreams, hopes and frustrations on the back of exactly one team, and the strain must be unbearable at times.

Yes I imagine the strain could be unbearable at times. Hockey fans need to realize their players aren't perfect and their favorite team losing is not the end of the world. They should give their favorite players a chance and realize they can't be performing 100% in every game all the time. It just doesn't happen.

    1. Mayor Jean Drapeau telephoned Campbell at the NHL officein town and begged him not to attend the game that night.

Campbell should have heeded Jean Drapeau's warning.

    1. The assessment literature suggests that confidence-weighted multiple-choice testing may improve validity without comprising reliability because it enables the measurement of partial knowledge (Hambleton, Roberts, & Traub, 1970). Correspondingly, recent research examining how confidence-weighted multiple-choice testing affects performance on a subsequent test suggests that the cognitive processes engaged in evaluating each alternative can be beneficial to learning (Sparck, Bjork, & Bjork, 2016).

Confidence-weighted testing may change the game.

    1. nitive skill development. One approach to doing this, which would be in line with Crystal Isl

If players who demonstrate SRL do better, does that indicate that SRL leads to better learning or that the two are just related? Also, if students are engaging in SRL practices through the game, does that count as metacognition or do students need to be aware that they are engaging in them as metacognition?

    1. atamuchhigherproportion

People probably choose that game because they think like that. Rather than people thinking like that because they play the game. I can imagine bringing this into schools and suddenly we wonder why some people hate it and people aren't doing well. Personal freedom of choice.

I really like the two-way communication between the producers and consumers of the game in order to make the game more enjoyable and easier for the players to understand.

    1. a topic model protocol

I thought some about this and about protocols in the form of white papers or RFCs tied to technology that changes and expands as fast as DH tech. In areas of DH it should work and informally definitely, and if not tied to the hermeneutics of the model. The underlying set of mathematics and perhaps some other things that rarely change, could be part of a protocol. The WE1S is courageous in addressing this subject which if formalized may be a game-changer for DH. I've only been familiar with protocols such as TCP/IP, SMTP, HTTP and the like which have to establish end to end results reliably. It would likely be easier to establish a protocol for dataset collection and workflow management criteria rather than topic modeling or other interpretative tools. Some might attempt rules and guidelines for interpretation methods that produce repeatable meaningful results. What if there as many research questions as there are researchers? Just thought I'd mention something. I liked your post and appreciated the ability to think again about what you guys were doing.

I’m in complete shock that SO many childrens’ lives Are being cut short due to this disease. Although it’s saddening to hear, it makes me feel great to know that this disease is somewhat preventable and can be reduced up to 60% with the use of mosquito nets (and prompt treatment for the infected). Since this article was written over 10 years ago, I’m hopeful the disease rate has gone down tremendously!

    1. game designers read academic texts on learning

Sure they have plenty of on-field experience which is great but let's not discount the fact that video game designers do look at science and use academic science to do their work. They aren't simply uneducated.

    2. bossing him around

I sympathize with the kid. Good job, kid, for charging your parent a dollar. This is why kids really don't want their parent to play video games with them. However, I don't agree with parents not being a part of their children's video game life. On the child's side, however, you probably have this complex of the child knowing they are in charge of this world of video games and likely the parent will never know what is going on there. It gives them power and they know it.

    3. The largest category of video-game players are middle-agewomen playing video card games alone and together on the Internet.

Why is it this particular demographic that makes up the majority?

    4. the video-game in-dustry makes as much or more money each year than the film industry.

I did not know this and that seems so crazy to me. It also seems like it makes sense but it this a good thing or a bad thing??

    5. However, you cannot play a game if you cannot learn it.

Another example of self motivation being required for learning. If you are not able to to get into a game, then you won't be able to learn or play the game to it's fullest.

    6. And, yes, poorchildren and teenagers do play video games, even if they have to find a com-puter or game console at school, in a library, or community center, or at afriend’s house.

Kids are naturally drawn to video games no matter what their race, or their quality of living is.

    7. If the principles of learning in good video games aregood, then bettertheories of learning are embedded in the video games many children in ele-mentary and particularly in high school play than in the schools they attend.

If a video game performs well with children, it could mean that the learning principles incorporated into the game are better than the ones in their education.

    8. I predict that shooting will be less important and talkingmore important in many games, even shooter games.

And I think your prediction is true today. Video games now a days (depending on the game) have balanced this out more.

    1. High-level social behaviors, such as the bystander effect, havebeen observed inside a simple video-game based virtual en-vironment (Kozlov and Johansen 2010). Social interactionsin Massively Multilayer Online games have been studiedby Cole et al. (Cole and Griffiths 2007).

games - another interesting mass collaboration context

    1. . A growing body of research indicates that interest helps us pay attention, make connections, persist and engage in deeper learning.

If you're interested in something your're going to put more effort into it. I find myself in school now trying so much harder and caring so much more about what I learn now that it has something to do with what I want to do for my career. I had interest in basketball, and practiced every single day and played for all my school teams from when I was 5 years old to I was 18. I wouldn't have put 100% effort and played that long if I wasn't interested in the game. My example of basketball relates to teaching school because I think if I could make my class interesting to where the kids were 100% involved and locked in like I was with basketball and with my classes now, then I think they would learn the material better and be more involved by participating, paying attention, and engaging in class activities.

    1. The more time you spend thinking about sleep pressure, the more it seems like a riddle game out of Tolkien:

Topic sentence. Veronique compares the unknown knowledge about sleep that scientists are looking for with "dark matter." She also raises some questions asking about "what builds up" when we are awake causing us to the need of sleep and whether it "diserses during sleep."

    1. But unlike a basketball game or a tennis match, high school students were handling, loading and firing guns. “Discipline is more important than the shooting,” parent volunteer Joan Marsden told me, explaining the sport’s rigorous safety regulations. “You have to respect the rifle for what it will do.”

comparing the sport of shooting to others, and the stress of safety that is put on the athletes allows us to see this is not a jock sport but a mind sport.

    1. If the video game has curved reflecting surfaces, such as a shiny silver goblet, the linear transformation matrix would be more complicated, to stretch or shrink the reflection.

Here's the sweet stuff. Now let's get to how we recognize this in even more places; build from the foundation.

    1. Basketball is a very fast and competitive game. There is a lot of engagement taking place in the air which could lead to a devastating landing at any moment putting a lot of strain on the players ankles and knees. The ankle and knee are the most common sites of injury, followed by the lower back, hand, and wrist.

I think this paragraph would look better if it was included in the mechanism of injury content.

    1. one student will physically hold the game  pad while other students will “guide” him/her through a series of commands

As an entry level activity around GBLL this is probably ok, but it seems like there will be a lot of dead time for most students. I.e. it's going to be hard to get all students to participate.

It could be expanded into a pairwork activity if you had one PS3 for each pair? But then, how are you making sure they are using the L2? Yes, the input they get is going to be L2, but not their own production.

    2. problem-solving, which can be applied to physical group interaction in the classroom

i.e. problems in the game can be solved in classroom-based groups?

    1. Garbage and various fruit rained down on the NHL boss, one man raced up and smeared a tomato on Campbell, and less than a minute later a homemade tear gas bomb went off.

This seems a little dramatic for a hockey game. I think that there could have been more mature ways to handle this situation.

    1. France he was having a good game and PSG was on the lead.

You need to backup that he was "having a good time". What was he doing? How do you know this?

You also need to write PSG out fully because some people may not understand what it means. And they were, "...IN the lead."

    1. “guessing and memory game

during this stages students are more likely to memorize stories, and retell stories rather than be able to read. but its the foundation of becoming familiar with words and phonics.

    1. The students borrowed heavily from their own gaming experiences, as well as their experi-ences as protesters and ethnographers to produce a game that focused on key events, issues, people, and perspectives surrounding the protests.

It's really interesting to see that they used personal experience and to see where they pulled from their own lives. Having firsthand knowledge of protests and games definitely would help.
