    1. North (1990) famously characterized institu-tions as “humanly devised constraints that structure political, economic and socialinteractions,” setting the rules of the game for an economy. He argued that well-func-tioning institutions enable prosperity by ensuring secure property rights, facilitatingcomplex contractual arrangements, aligning norms to allow markets to functioneffectively, and so on.

    1. We know from modern neuroscience that prediction is a core property of human intelligence. Perhaps the game of predict-the-next-word is what children unconsciously play when they are acquiring language themselves: listening to what initially seems to be a random stream of phonemes from the adults around them, gradually detecting patterns in that stream and testing those hypotheses by anticipating words as they are spoken. Perhaps that game is the initial scaffolding beneath all the complex forms of thinking that language makes possible.

Is language acquisition a very complex method of pattern recognition?

    2. Another way to widen the pool of stakeholders is for government regulators to get into the game, indirectly representing the will of a larger electorate through their interventions.

This is certainly "a way", but history has shown, particularly in the United States, that government regulation is unlikely to get involved at all until it's far too late, if at all. Typically they're only regulating not only after maturity, but only when massive failure may cause issues for the wealthy and then the "regulation" is to bail them out.

Suggesting this here is so pie-in-the sky that it only creates a false hope (hope washing?) for the powerless. Is this sort of hope washing a recurring part of

    1. A 2008 international study in 34 medical centers found significantly greater adherence to treatment and cancer-related knowledge among children who played “Re-Mission” compared to children who played a different computer game.

this shows that video games can be used to educate kids and teach them.

    2. Children’s creativity was also enhanced by playing any kind of video game, including violent games, but not when the children used other forms of technology, such as a computer or cell phone, other research revealed.

Video games specificly improve creativity, not lowers it.

    1. For example, when the augmented reality game Pokemon Go firstlaunched in 2016, the only way to create an account was throughGoogle single sign on. However, this process granted the app “fullaccess to your Google account. That means the developer ofPokemon Go, Niantic, may have access to your emails, Google Drive, calendar, contacts, photos, Chrome browsing history, search history,Maps data... and, well, anything else linked to your Google account”(Cipriani, 2016, para. 3). As educators, it is important to understand

The need to work online, use browsers, and technology is ever increasing., and there is a link that connects all of their threads together. We encounter them each day in using different apps to find, locate, and purchase items. Marketing has evolved and aimed at capturing data to improve sales, market shares, and users. Therefore, many tech companies have made compromises that places the user in the center of a fight for them to use the services provided by these companies versus a competitor. Again, market shares, greed, and profit has replaced traditional business practices that would allow some privacy to the consumer. Nowadays, the consumer is a pawn being used to improve profit margins.

    1. Do what you enjoy. If you like sports, go out and play a game or two with your friends. If you enjoy reading, a trip to the library will help clear your headspace.

I definitely think these methods are effective i write whenever i feel angry or in my head about my fathers addiction and being able to escape to the one place you love or by doing something you love can definitely settle your mind and allow you to get ur stress or anger relived.

    2. You should never believe that someone’s failure to end their addiction is your fault. This just causes negative thoughts, which are, ultimately, counterproductive. Instead of playing “the blame game,” work together with your addicted family member and let them know you are there to help.

Coming from Personal experience thinking your the cause of the addiction will only create more harm and emotional damage and you have to understand no one makes you do anything. Everyone is their own person and is accountable for their own actions every choice someone made is because they wanted to make that choice.

    1. The Musketeers then blew the game open with a 12-2 run behind Kunkel, who made two 3s and threw an alley-oop dunk to Nunge. Kunkel followed with his fifth 3 of the first half to give Xavier a 19-point lead with 1:26 left.

The Musketeers advance to the sweet 16 for the nine time in school history. Xavier came back from 15 down on Friday to beat Kennesaw State on Friday and yesterday went a really impressive run and won easily vs Pitt. Xavier is one of three big east team in sweet sixteen with three teams in that helps the school's revenge and media attention.

    1. Unfortunately, many tools are not robust. For example, you might find the perfect app for your students only to discover it works solely on iPads, and your students have Chromebooks. Or, you may come across an excellent Flash-based math game, but it cannot be accessed on iPhones or iPads without paying for a Flash-based browser like Puffin. Or, you might find a captivating geography app, but it isn't compatible with your students' older tablets.

This has happened many times in classrooms I have worked in or with helping my mom find new tools and it is so annoying.

    1. when you do something in the classroom that mimics their lives outside the classroom, the activity tends to be more memorable and, therefore, more effective

This is so true. This idea also works for other student interests like video games or a sport that they like, and these are topics that can be incorporated into math problems or even social studies (as I recently included a video game map in my lesson on maps).

    1. Google, with their Apollo project, has developed a non-blocking 136x136 optical circuit switch that is both forward and backward-compatible with any bandwidth or wavelength Google uses or will use in its data centers. This switch, according to Google, only uses 108 watts of power consumption. Compared to a standard 136 port EPS switch, which would be in the 3,000 watts range. So while there are disadvantages to OCS, Google has created a solution that has far more upsides than there are downsides for them. And over the past 5 years, “tens of thousands of 136x136 port OCS (eight spare ports) were manufactured and deployed.” Google has created a system that works incredibly very well for them.In the future, Google is looking at a larger port count OCS for further scale-out capabilities as well as faster switching speeds to allow wider adoption of OCS in the lower layers of the network. This broader adoption would be tremendously negative to Broadcom, the leader in hyperscale networking switches. Furthermore, Google says they will also continue to improve reliability and lower insertion/return loss.

      30x power usage improvement

    2. The low latency of OCS comes from the fact that OCS does not have to decode packets; all they have to do is bounce the incoming light from the source port to the destination port.

There's no conversion back and forth between light and packets. It's a bit like the serialisation / deserialisation cost higher up the stack

    3. Google uses these optical switches in a direct connect architecture to directly connect the leaves through a patch panel. This is not packet switching; this is, for all intents and purposes, an optical cross-connect.

So this is the big change. The optical switches trade off faster connectivity ( fewer hops needed), but in return take longer to set up to establish the mirror conneciton.

    4. Traditionally the spine of this network uses what is called Electronic Packet Switch (EPS). These are the normal network switches of which Broadcom, Cisco, Marvell, and Nvidia are the leading providers. However, these EPS use a ton of power. Furthermore, every 2 to 3 years, networking speeds have doubled. While this doubling improves power consumption, it also comes with the requirement of upgrading the existing spine EPS. As such, there is always a huge wave of Capex associated with every new generation of Broadcom Tomahawk switch.

These are the Top Of Rack switches?

    5. Before diving too deep into how their custom networking stack works, let’s quickly discuss what it does and the industry implications. First off, Google claims their custom network improves throughput by 30%, use 40% less power, incurs 30% less Capex, reduces flow completion by 10%, and delivers 50x less downtime across their network.

These are wild figures. What is the counterfactual?

    1. The general sucked in his breath and smiled. "I congratulate you," he said. "You have won the game." Rainsford did not smile. "I am still a beast at bay," he said, in a low, hoarse voice. "Get ready, General Zaroff." The general made one of his deepest bows. "I see," he said. "Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford." . . . He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.

Rainsford had won, but it greatly damaged.

    1. Enemies of Hop

I like how this article is organized into the different potential threats to hope. It reminds me of a video game where there are different characters and their stats are written out to describe how much damage they do or what their best attacks are.

    1. Many young people have multiple accounts on a single service. While this can support self-expression, it can also limit parental oversight and remove safeguards in place on child accounts.

    1. 22-year-old brother shoots, kills 21-year-old sister over a video game in Cincinnati

The title itself was so shocking because you wouldn't think that normally somebody would get into a fight so bad that cost an innocent life to be gone so soon due to a video game. Also, since its in my area it caught my attention as well.

    2. Deep down, I always knew Myshawn would hurt somebody because he was always so angry. But, I never thought he would take ‘Miss B’ away from us,” Ahmyah’s aunt, Dina Meece, informed.

He sounds like he was a very angry person and had been aggressive before, just by the way his own aunt described him as

    3. Ahmyah’s grandmother, Misty Wood, even said that he threatened to kill his sister before the shooting.

I wonder if he threatened to kill her because of the game or if they had a larger issue that has not talked about in the article that could have led to the action.

    4. CINCINNATI

I find it crazy that this information hasn't appeared on my social media platforms. I had to look up Google News and see what was trending. Since I go to Xavier and it's in Cincinnati, I would have expected for more people to talk about it since we are close to the location.

    5. “bright, vibrant, and determined person who had dreams to become a hair stylist for abused women and children”

Ahmyah had a bright future ahead of her. Accidents happen all of the time but this situation was done with hatred and motive, by her own brother.

    6. Myshawn Stanley, 22, of killing his sister because he wanted to play Fortnite when she wanted to watch a television program

Crazy to think about how a death was caused by a fight between a video game and a television show.

    7. 21-year-old woman’s brother shot and killed her after an argument over a video game.

This story caught my attention because the title/header was shocking and straightforward.

    1. The teams had seen another shift in players. Boston had strong athletes like Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett. Los Angeles had Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, and Kobe Bryant.Celtics started off with a two-game lead, and this momentum led them to a 4-2 victory. The team needed this after a 22-year streak of occasional final places, but zero NBA Championships. The next two years the Lakers saw the Finals. 2009 they won against Orlando Magic, but that was only practice for the upcoming war. In 2010, the Lakers and Celtics once again had a fierce battle in the Finals.

Kinda gets dry here. When reading it seemed pretty surface level without much depth, just a brief explanation. Maybe explain more with info like the leading scorer from the winning team or a little more description on how the games went.

    1. What is the relationship between protocols and agency? Do protocols assume or require a set of participating agents with autonomy or free-will?

Initial thoughts — review later I mean, if I had to pull in some Bandura, it's bi-drectional determinism? Right? So it's influencing behaviour as an environmental factor that could also be done by thinking?

If I think about Csikszentmihalyi in Good Business on culture as a game, perhaps rules are to games what protocols are to culture? If culture is a set of norms that keep you from anomie / entropy and make spaces for alienation, then the agency of the individual may be developed over time (control over consciousness) that may allow for greater expression over agency to follow or not follow protocols. In this sense, protocols would be the default, and intentionally not following protocols (probabilistically not by chance) might require agency? That is if we are following the definition that good protocols have the Schelling point or become default and are almost invisible untill they break.

Bureaucracy may be an example of a deeply frustrating protocol?

    2. Good protocols, in short, are the embodiments of A. N. Whitehead’s famous assertion that “civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking of them.” Not only do good protocols deliver civilizational advances, they do so in sustainable ways. “Stability without stagnation” (a guiding principle of the Rust programming language[3]) is the condition good protocols aspire to, and surprisingly often, manage to achieve and sustain for long enough to produce and consolidate significant civilizational advances.

    1. “Well I wot,” quoth Sir Gawain, “that ye have chosen a better; but I am proud that ye should so prize me, and as your servant do I hold ye my sovereign, and your knight am I, and may Christ reward ye.” So they talked of many matters till mid-morn was past, and ever the lady made as though she loved him, and the knight turned her speech aside. For though she were the brightest of maidens, yet had he forborne to shew her love for the danger that awaited him, and the blow that must be given without delay.

Despite the compliment-filled flirtation between the host's wife and Gawain seen in this section of the text, this is not merely a romantic scene between the two characters. This scene is important as it shows that the depth of their apparent connection and temptation is almost a game and struggle, as both of them attempt to seduce the other more and more actively. The tension and seemingly light-hearted interactions actually become a pressing matter when it comes to Gawain's inability to successfully follow the host's rules and when the wife even holds him "captive" to obtain the pleasure that she seeks. After looking over the scholarly source cited below by Jordan Stinnett for an honors thesis, it is interesting to see how viewing the Lady's seduction as feminist manipulation and a reclaiming of power that traditionally belongs to male characters.

    2. The girdle of green silk set gaily and well upon the royal red cloth, rich to behold, but the knight ware it not for pride of the pendants, polished though they were with fair gold that gleamed brightly on the ends, but to save himself from sword and knife, when it behoved him to abide his hurt without question. With that the hero went forth, and thanked that kindly folk full often.

The colors of the Girdle, green and gold are significant. As previously established, the color green represents nature and the wild aspects of life, which is represented in Gawain's reasoning for accepting the girdle; Gawain's natural instinct for self preservation, as he is told that the girdle as the ability to protect him from harm. While the color gold represents perfection, chivalry, the standards of a knighthood Gawain holds himself to. According to professor Goldhurst, the colors of the girdle represent the conflict Gawain faces accepting the gift, "Gawain has yielded to the "green" of the girdle. This fact is the cause of his shame, for his entire way of life should have led him to resist the primal call of nature, and to cling to the "gold" of the image: courtliness, grace, and the denial of natural impulses" (Goldhurst, 5). After accepting the girdle Gawain must decide if he will make the green choice to keep the girdle for himself, using it for protection against the Green Knight, or will he make the gold and honorable choice, following the rules of the game and presenting the girdle to Bertilak. Gawain makes the green choice which is why by the end of the story the girdle becomes a symbol of shame for Gawain.

    3. Then the Green Knight swiftly made him ready

This scene is perhaps the most important scene in the piece. What are the constructs of this beheading scene? Why the three attempts only for the beheading to be thrown away? Weiss claims that "many interpretations of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are based on a careless reading of what has unfortunately come to be called 'the beheading game' in the first fit (Weiss 361). Why would you say this beheading game is so crucial?

    4. He wore a robe of blue

While this whole story focuses on the symbolism of the colors green and gold, blue is also an important color. Blue can "represent serenity and tranquility, instilling a scene with a calming effect" (Gaiman 7). The lord and host in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight keeps a great relaxed and calm composure throughout the whole story. The host provides a safe place and a fun trading game for Sir Gawain, which correlates to the easy goingness of the color blue. The host's wife can be represented with the color blue as well, both of them staying collected and easy going. The color blue represents them well.

    5. lifted up the eyelids and looked upon them and spake as ye shall hear. “Look, Gawain, that thou art ready to go as thou hast promised, and seek leally till thou find me, even as thou hast sworn in this hall in the hearing of these knights. Come thou, I charge thee, to the Green Chapel, such a stroke as thou hast dealt thou hast deserved, and it shall be promptly paid thee on New Year’s morn. Many men know me as the knight of the Green Chapel, and if thou askest, thou shalt not fail to find me. Therefore it behoves thee to come, or to yield thee as recreant.”

This section foreshadows multiple aspects of the poem. Obviously, this is the act that foreshadows the Green Knight's true power. By resurrecting immediately following decapitation, we are seeing a glimpse into the supernatural power this mysterious figure possess. Additionally, this section foreshadows the intellect and followthrough of the Green Knight, by reciting (for the third time in the poem, via dialogue) the terms of the oath being made by Sir Gawain - the language used even indicates that the Green Knight views this as law-like and now guaranteed to play out. Effectively showcasing the Knight's "game master" level of thinking and Sir Gawain's "in over his head" level of unpreparedness for the remainder of the work.

    6. Therefore I ask in this court but a Christmas jest, for that it is Yule-tide, and New Year, and there are here many fain for sport. If any one in this hall holds himself so hardy, 4 so bold both of blood and brain, as to dare strike me one stroke for another, I will give him as a gift this axe, which is heavy enough, in sooth, to handle as he may list, and I will abide the first blow, unarmed as I sit.

The Green Knight proposes the question that someone plays a "game" with him that involves a contract. These lines in the poem explores the themes of chivalry as the contract alludes to bravery and probity since it deals with an agreement. He fools Gawain into this contract by disclosing that he will grant him the initial strike, allowing him to slice his head off. Ironically, the Green Knight's characteristics of "Trickery and deceit" are in opposition to the traditional attributes of chivalry (Maldonado 13). This deceit comes as the Green Knight fails to tell Gawain that after he strikes him, he will still be alive. The Green Knight essentially disguises his true identity which "feigns ignorance about Gawain and his quest" (Maldonado 13). In other words, the Green Knight fails to inform Gawain of his immortal-like characteristics considering he survives decapitation, and through his inability to speak the truth, he breaks the chivalric code.

    1. And the knight answered, “Nay, I ask no fight, in faith here on the benches are but beardless children, were I clad in armour on my steed there is no man here might match me. If any knight be so bold as to prove my words let him come swiftly to me here, and take this weapon, I quit claim to it, he may keep it as his own, and I will abide his stroke, firm on the floor. Then shalt thou give me the right to deal him another, the respite of a year and a day shall he have. Now haste, and let see whether any here dare say aught.”

Something to mention here is the involvement in what we deem as the "Beheading Game" which was actually a very common game in Celtic lore. However, in the story of Gawain and the Green Knight, there are other parallels to similar stories in Celtic lore. One of these being the Champions Bargain, Alice Buchanan explains the similarities, saying "1. As in GGK, the challenger offers to submit to a stroke with the ax on condition that he be allowed later to return the blow. In the Champion's Bargain, on the contrary, the exchange of blows is first proposed in the reverse order, and only changed after Dubthach's protest. 2. As in GGK, the completion of the bargain is carried out in a wild region, in GGK beside a turbulent burn, in the Yellow and Terror tale be- side a loch. By contrast, in the Champion's Bargain the adventure con- cludes in the royal palace. 3. As in GGK, the hero is led to the spot by a guide furnished by his host. In the Champion's Bargain, of course, no guidance is necessary. 4. As in GGK, the challenger "let the ax come down three times on his neck." In the Champion's Bargain he deals but one stroke." (Buchanan 317).

She goes further into the context of mixing lore and the similarities between Gawain, Lancelot, and other figures from stories that predate the Green Knight.

It is also worth mentioning how Green impacts the story. Symbolism is prevalent in the story, Green being used as a symbol of nature, the unknown, death, and even the Devil. As the Devil was depicted as a Green being.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the few pieces of literature we have from the 14th century, J.R.R. Tolkien even translated the document. This story has given us a great cultural impact and insight into our past. Its even more relevant to add how previous stories and even pagan lore influenced a Christian story.

Game theory is a mathematical framework used to analyze and understand the behavior of individuals or groups when they are faced with strategic decisions. It is often used in economics, political science, psychology, and other fields where individuals' decisions are affected by the decisions of others.

One of the key concepts in game theory is interdependence, which refers to the fact that the outcome of one person's decision depends not only on their own actions but also on the actions of others. Interdependence can arise in many situations, including economic markets, social networks, and political negotiations.

I would have liked if the author explained the characteristic of the focus group. It could be the social awkwardness was due to a disability. Gaming could be the only way to interact without judgment. There are some mental disabilities that show propensities to isolation and less empathy. The statement is too general.

    2. Young people who were more impulsive, more socially inept and less empathetic to begin with were more likely to become excessive video game players.

Here the article is showing the audience who is most effected by playing video games for long hours who are already socially inept and take up video gaming as a way to vent stress but it has shown that playing more makes the situation of the individual worse.

    3. There’s been a lot of buzz about whether video games are habit-forming, and whether parents are exaggerating when they say their teenagers are “addicted” to game playing. Now new research on children who are heavy gamers suggests parents may have something else to worry about: depression.

I think that habits in general not only playing video games, are widely criticized by parents for example going out with your friends or even spending too much time studying. The point being that video games are addicting which is true but depression does not come from other activities as easily as it does from video games in my opinion which is why it is concerning.

From this statement, I got that countries are always "at the ready" for war, and have their reasoning be that they are just trying to protect their citizens. I think that this is untrue. While there are plenty of extreme nationalists that support this behavior, I still do think that it's rare that you would be able to find an average citizen in a given country that feels protected by the thought of their country going to war or even supportive of the idea in general. With that being said, now that "wars/conflict" is so normalized, I do think that there are plenty of people who are more willing to cheer on their countries in this game of violence.

The paper is well written, and the objectives are clear. The study is a very nice application of CGR in bioinformatics and shows the excellent performance of CGR-encoded data in combination with deep learning. I have a few things that should be addressed in a minor revision:

      1) Some very important studies have not been addressed in the related work part, e.g., in Touati et al. (pubmed:32645523) and Sengupta et al. (pubmed:32953249), the authors compared SARS-CoV2 with other coronaviruses based on CGR, or we (pubmed:34613360) used CGR in combination with deep learning for resistance predictions in E. coli.

      2) To me, it is unclear how accuracy was used in the model. Is it one class (i.e., clade) versus all others? If yes, accuracy might be misleading because of the high class imbalance. In such high class imbalances, MCC has been shown to be more suitable.

      3) "The undersampled dataset was randomly split into train...". Why did you undersample? To balance the data, which would make sense to use accuracy as a metric but discard a lot of valuable data. What about oversampling?

      4) Comparison with other tools: I wonder whether the good performance of your model is the result of deep learning or the CGR encoding. Please also provide the results for another ML model (besides SVM, e.g., random forests) to compare to, e.g., Covidex.

      Reviewer 2: Riccardo Rizzo

The authors propose a classification experiment based on Frequency Chaos Game Representation and deep learning. They used the outstanding performances of a ResNet network as an image classification tool and the FCGR method that represent a genome sequence as an image.

The work seems good, although some major points should be clarified.

First, whether the performance index values came from a 5-fold validation procedure (5 because they said the split was 80-10-10) or a one-shot experiment is unclear.

Second, the part that involves the frequent k-mers and the SVM should be better explained. The authors should clarify what the meaning of this comparison is.

Another point to clarify is the quality of the sequences used; the authors worked on complete sequences, but, as far as I know, in the real world virus sequences are noisy data, and authors should discuss this point.

      Minor points:

      • Authors said that a sequence is a string $s \in {A, C, G, T, N}^*$, so they should explain the procedure used in Definition 2, where only 4 symbols seem to be used. If they discard the N, or consider 4 k-mers (consider that N means "any symbol") they should say it clearly.
      • Figure 1 and 2 report two different quantities but say the same thing; maybe one of them can be omitted.
      • Authors should add some details about the training time of the network.

A final suggestion: probably it will be interesting to use the same deep network with transfer learning (the whole network or just the first sections) to evaluate the gain with ad-hoc training and the different training time.

    2. St. Edward’s men’s basketball team fell to fourth in the standings for the Lone Star Conference with a 14-7 record.  The team has one more regular-season game before playing the LSC Tournament.

      excellent, context for readers

    3. The St. Edward’s women’s basketball team is now placed eighth in the Lone Star Conference. They need to win the next and final regular-season game against St. Mary’s in order to clinch a position in the LSC Tournament.

    4. “We just had a great offensive stride going on in the first quarter, and I think that just really boosted our confidence for the rest of the game,” junior Ronnie Cantu said.

      great quote

    5. With a 13-point lead, the Hilltoppers came out with a valuable 74-61 victory from the Battle of the Saints against the St. Mary’s Rattlers on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

slight revision here, would say lead if during game, otherwise it's a 13-point victory

    6. “We competed, but at this time of the year, it’s not about competing. We need to win,” Head Coach Andre Cook said.

    1. long-term video game studies with a panel design are still rare

Although this study highlights how rare they are, finding one long-term study even if it is in relation to an animal study would be extremely useful

    1. Therefore, the strong effect sizes in our sample of experienced game playersmay well be a consequence of repeated elicitation of neural activity associatedwith aggression and, thus, already reflect a long-term impact.

This study focused on short term impact but could have implications for long term impact

    2. Without question, game players donot consider game play a real2 life event—ultimately, they are not shooting; theyare playing a game.

While the players can distinguish that, are the areas of the brain responsible for aggression able to make that distinction?

    3. lternatively, the desensitization hypothesissuggests larger effects in novices if experts already have decreased sensitivity to-wards virtual violence.

Since younger people have more neuroplasticity, could video game use affect them more?

    4. ACC represent a mechanism to suppress positive emotions (such as empa-thy) so that the individual can play the game successfully.

Users ability to feel empathy decreases (makes them better at the game, but how does it impact them outside of the game?)

    5. Overall, the participants felt more or less comfortable playingthe game in the scanner and could play the game like they do in their normal envi-ronment.

This is important since it indicates that the video game was not considered overly aggressive, but actually something the participants were used to playing (this is a typical representation of violent video games that millions are engaging with)

    6. Involvement in virtual violence during video game play causes activity vari-ation in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, reduced activity in the rostralanterior cingulate cortex, and reduced activity in the amygdala.

      HYPOTHESIS of study

    7. Though some studies found no association between violent video game playand aggressive reactions

Neuroscience could provide more in depth insight/ a different perspective

    8. Depending on how players read a game and its violent content, playingmight have a greater or lesser impact on the players’ attitudes, emotions, and be-haviors

Our cognitive processing of a game and its meaning can affect how it affects us

    9. 70 top-selling video games found 49%contained serious violence

Does the visual quality of the game have an influence on how people perceive the violence? Personally I know that I have trouble empathizing more with games from the 90s than I do with next-generation ones because they're more realistic

    1. A lot of my students are fans of voice typing,

Last year, some of my 4th graders truly loved using voice typing. It's a big game changer for students who struggle with reading and physical writing but have complete comprehension on a subject they are supposed to write about. It's also much more accessible for people who struggle to physically type.

    1. Google will listen as you present and transcribe your words as you speak.

This is INCREDIBLE. I had no idea that this was possible, and it could be a total game changer for students with hearing difficulties or any student who prefers reading over listening.

    1. ClassLink)

We use Classlink at my school. However I am torn about it's effectiveness. It is only really updated at the beginning of the year and so I feel like we miss out on a lot of opportunities to make it a game changer for our K-8 students.

It's a very interesting poem. Morrison is referencing the historical reader "Dick and Jane". At first the poem is stable, but as Jane cntinues to be dismissed and ignored, she begins to have a break down. All punctuation, capitalization and spacing is lost as Jane begins to spiral. I think this is foreshadowing for what will happen to the protagonist's mental state.

    1. Some measures of quality may be more difficult to achieve when studying a video game as opposed to other types of interventions. For example, only 11% of eligible studies blinded researchers, because researchers were often heavily involved in helping operate and/or facilitate the video games (e.g., when stroke or fracture victims were assisted with rehabilitation).

this could have affected the results

    2. , it should not be concluded that it is preferable to have shorter duration of intervention, and future studies should compare interventions of various lengths.

video game treatment is more effective in smaller amounts(<12 weeks)

    3. Study outcomes differed by game purpose category (Table 1). For example, only 50% of studies that aimed to improve disease self-management had positive primary outcomes, compared with 67%–100% for all other game types (e.g., physical therapy, psychological therapy, distraction from pain).

not the most useful for disease self management

    4. Today’s video game players defy traditional stereotypes. The average game player is 34 years old; 40% of players are female, and 26% are aged >50 years.4 In 2009, 67% of U.S. households owned either a console and/or a personal computer (PC) used to run entertainment software.

      better stats

    1. participants found playing KF fun, but it is unlikely to be feasible for long-term game play given the lack of content. Offering new AVGs, or the regular addition of new content, may help address these problems and make AVGs more viable as a component of long-term lifestyle change.

the participants liked the game, but it doesn't have enough content to last long term

    2. The augmented reality game Pokémon GO made great strides in getting a large population of inactive individuals outside and walking.31,32 Unfortunately, this success was short-lived.33 Two studies reported that after ~30-40 days, the number of steps taken was back to pre-game levels,34,35 likely due, in part, to a loss of interest in the game.18

example of avg being short lived

    3. , it required players to perform certain actions that they had difficulty doing. The effect of this issue was seen in participants who ended the gaming session early because they could not advance through the game as a result.

problem that can happen with AVGs

    1. Overall, there is inconclusive evidence that video games are associated with obesity and, due to the lack of longitudinal studies, virtually no evidence to evaluate if video game play directly contributes to obesity or weight gain in children. On the other hand, there is some (limited) evidence that video game play that involves physical activity can be integrated within behavioral programs to help children to lose weight and attenuate weight gain. Future research should delve into the co-occurrence of video game play with obesogenic behaviors and continue to keep pace with the constantly growing and evolving video game industry to understand the impact of this popular pastime on children’s health.

      good to reread

    2. Is video game play causing childhood obesity, or are children with obesity more likely to play video games, or does video game play cluster with other obesogenic behaviors like higher dietary intake and poor sleep and these behaviors may independently explain observed associations?

      correlation=/ causation issue

    3. Video game addiction has been associated other negative outcomes, including lower school performance and higher substance use in adolescence [76] and problematic gaming behaviors later in life

same statement as other sources. Good for corroboration

    4. There is a growing interest in video game play before bedtime due to delaying sleep onset and shortening sleep duration, as youth with shorter sleep duration have been shown to consume more calories [69, 70] and have higher prevalence of obesity

video games causing less sleep can cause an increased calorie intake

    5. Overall, there is inconclusive evidence that video games directly influence childhood obesity, from both observational and intervention studies. There are multiple opportunities for future areas of research into video game play and its potential effects on childhood obesity, including better capturing quality or content not just quantity of video game play as related to obesity and related behaviors.
    6. Overall, there is inconsistent evidence of the relationship between video gaming and obesity, with just over half of articles indicating no significant association between video game play and obesity.

it cant be confirmed video games cause obesity, but it can be assumed there is a higher risk of developing obesity.

    7. Preliminary evidence indicated that video game play may be related to higher carbohydrate intake [21] and insufficient sleep [20, 39], but this evidence is limited

idk about the carbohydrate thing, but the lack of sleep is true

    8. Fourteen of the 26 articles (53%) reported no association between video game play and obesity, whereas 12 reported a positive association. No article found an inverse relationship between video game play and obesity. In the 11 articles that assessed duration of video game play in general, seven articles did not find an association in adjusted models [21, 31, 33–35, 37, 43]

there is mixed studies on the relationship between obesity and time spent playing video games

    9. Around this time, video games were becoming repurposed to utilize for positive health-related changes, most notably exergames that required the player to engage in upper and/or lower body movement [16]. No longer solely a sedentary pastime, exergaming was investigated in early studies as a genre of video game that indicated promise for improving players’ physical activity levels [17] and consequently reduce body fat and obesity [18].

      exergames started 2008

    1. The gunman who killed 22 people and injured 24 others at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on August 3 made a fleeting reference to video game soldiers, indicating that he was familiar with video violence, and many politicians were quick to blame video games for this and other mass shootings. Yet it seems clear that the El Paso gunman was primarily motivated by ethnic hatred.

video games are not the cause of real world violence , but can be a contributor to people who were already likely to do something.

    1. In short, playing video games can be fun and a social activity when integrated into a healthy lifestyle that includes plenty of sleep, exercise, and good nutrition, rather than letting the game become your life.

highlights the importance of balancing video games in your life.

    2. There is mixed research that there are some cognitive benefits to gaming, such as better control of one’s attention and improved spatial reasoning, though it isn’t entirely clear how much these benefits extend outside of the video game sphere into the real world.

increased attention span and spatial reasoning.

    3. being entertaining and a fun pastime, gaming can provide a way for people to interact with each other — a virtual community — as they work together toward completing common tasks. Our society suffers from an epidemic of loneliness, and gaming can be a vehicle to connect with others, including otherwise difficult-to-connect-with people in your life, such as kids, grandkids, or (I’ve seen this be quite helpful) with autistic children, who can have challenges with traditional modes of communication.

      some video game beneifits

    1. Video game addiction is often a symptom of an underlying emotional or psychological issue such as depression or anxiety, and sometimes goes hand in hand with defiance, ADHD, and other conditions.

usually video game addiction isn't a condition by itself, it is a sign of an underlying condition

    2. The American Academy of Pediatrics currently recommends that children should limit “screen time” (time spent playing video games, using the computer, or watching television and movies) to one or two hours a day of “quality programming.”

a good way to lower dependency on games

    3. It is estimated that over 90% of young people in the U.S. play video games, indicating that up to three million could be showing signs of addiction.

      impactful fact

    4. The study, which is based on data from a nationwide survey of 1,178 American children and teenagers, aged 8 to 18, found that roughly one in 10 video game players (8.5 percent of American youth) show signs of addictive behavior.

      addiction stats

    1. Considering most online VGPs are men and this difference is also observed in addiction cases, they studied the possible factors and observed that lower self-esteem and lower daily life satisfaction are determinant in men, but not women. They attribute these differences to the reasons on why they play VGs: while men declared to play to pursue feelings of achievement and social-bonding, it was not the case for women. This aspect is not new to VG addiction and is shared aspect with other addictions. It is likely that VGs are used as a way to cope with these problems, leading up to the development of the addiction.

most people with online video game addictions are men likely because they play for achievement and social bonding.

    2. VG addiction is understood as an impulse-control disorder with psychological consequences, not unlike other addictive disorders, especially non-substance addictions such as pathological gambling (Young, 1998).

Video game addiction has similar affects to gambling addictions(little impulse control)

    3. Despite the observed structural and functional changes in prefrontal areas, executive functions trained in a VG show poor transfer effects as measured with cognitive tasks (Colom et al., 2012; Kühn et al., 2013).

It is hard for video game skills to transfer to real world scenarios

    4. Non-VGPs, compared to VGPs, showed greater frontoparietal recruitment, a source of selective attention, as task demands increased, showing that habitual gamers have more efficient top-down resource allocation during attentional demanding tasks

gamw players when compared to non game players, have a more developed frontal lobe

    1. stinging hands. He wasn’t even sure if it had been hit by Pete Guerrero. He thought for sure it had been, but he didn’t ask. He didn’t watch the game then—he couldn’t. He didn’t care who won. He stared at his official National League ball, reimagining what had happened.

This is one of the first time if not the first time we read about Erick being completely stricken by amazement and happiness.

    1. "“opposites attract” principle but also of the search for subjective ideals."

can refer back to the social psychology theories of attraction, especially the Complementarity theory, showing how partners complete each other when one person is lacking in something, thus them thinking they are the perfect match because they "complete each other". Only I believe that this theory can either break or make a relationship, because sometimes the feeling/longing of wanting to be complete by a person can be a reason for you to depend on you happiness on them, and that is a very dangerous game.

    1. especially those at the margins

I can confirm from personal experience that "those at the margins" of our educational system are demotivated by grades. As a special education teacher for eight years, I worked with many students who refused to see getting a good grade on a test, quiz or assignment as a good enough reason for engaging in that activity. Now that I work with "gifted" students who wouldn't typically be thought of as marginalized, I can see the same dynamic at play. The students from middle-class and upper-middle-class families are usually more than happy to play the grades game, but less socioeconomically advantaged students, just as in my special ed days, often find grades more stressful than motivating. As a program we've made strides in reducing that gap over the past eight years, but we still have a gap.

    1. Conversation Hey, JB, I played a pickup game at the Rec today. At first, the older guys laughed and wouldn’t let me in unless I could hit from half-court . . . Of course, I did. All net. I wait for JB to say something, but he just smiles, his eyes all moony. I showed them guys how the Bells ball. I scored fourteen points. They told me I should try out for junior varsity next year ’cause I got hops . . . JB, are you listening? JB nods, his fingers tapping away on the computer, chatting probably with Miss Sweet Tea. I told the big guys about you, too. They said we could come back and run with them anytime. What do you think about that? HELLO—Earth to JB? Even though I know he hears me, the only thing JB is listening to is the sound of his heart bouncing on the court of love.

Conversation Dad, this girl is making Jordan act weird. He’s here, but he’s not. He’s always smiling. His eyes get all spacey whenever she’s around, and sometimes when she’s not. He wears your cologne. He’s always texting her. He even wore loafers to school. Dad, you gotta do something. Dad does something. He laughs. Filthy, talking to your brother right now would be like pushing water uphill with a rake, son. This isn’t funny, Dad. Say something to him. Please. Filthy, if some girl done locked up JB, he’s going to jail. Now let’s go get some doughnuts.

Basketball Rule #5 When you stop playing your game you’ve already lost.

Showoff UP by sixteen with six seconds showing, JB smiles, then STRUTS side steps stutters Spins, and SI NKS a sick SLICK SLIDING SWeeeeeeeeeeT SEVEN-foot shot. What a showoff.

Out of Control Are you kidding me? Come on. Ref, open your eyes. Ray Charles could have seen that kid walked. CALL THE TRAVELING VIOLATION! You guys are TERRIBLE! Mom wasn’t at the game tonight, which meant that all night Dad was free to yell at the officials, which he did.

Mom calls me into the kitchen after we get home from beating St. Francis. Normally she wants me to sample the macaroni and cheese to make sure it’s cheesy enough, or the oven-baked fried chicken to make sure it’s not greasy and stuff, but today on the table is some gross-looking orange creamy dip with brown specks in it. A tray of pita-bread triangles is beside it. Maybe Mom is having one of her book club meetings. Sit down, she says. I sit as far away from the dip as possible. Maybe the chicken is in the oven. Where is your brother? she asks. Probably on the phone with that girl. She hands me a pita. No thanks, I say, then stand up to leave, but she gives me a look that tells me she’s not finished with me. Maybe the mac is in the oven. We’ve talked to you two about your grandfather, she says. He was a good man. I’m sorry you never got to meet him, Josh. Me too, he looked cool in his uniforms. That man was way past cool. Dad said he used to curse a lot and talk about the war. Mom’s laugh is short, then she’s serious again. I know we told you Grandpop died after a fall, but the truth is he fell because he had a stroke. He had a heart disease. Too many years of bad eating and not taking care of himself and so— What does this have to do with anything? I ask, even though I think I already know. Well, our family has a history of heart problems, she says, so we’re going to start eating better. Especially Dad. And we’re going to start tonight with some hummus and pita bread. FOR MY VICTORY DINNER? Josh, we’re going to try to lay off the fried foods and Golden Dragon. And when your dad takes you to the recreation center, no Pollard’s or Krispy Kreme afterward, understand? And I understand more than she thinks I do. But is hummus really the answer?

35–18 is the final score of game six. A local reporter asks JB and I how we got so good. Dad screams from behind us, They learned from Da Man! The crowd of parents and students behind us laughs. On the way home Dad asks if we should stop at Pollard’s. I tell him I’m not hungry, plus I have a lot of homework, even though I skipped lunch today and finished my homework during halftime.

Too Good Lately, I’ve been feeling like everything in my life is going right: I beat JB in Madden. Our team is undefeated. I scored an A+ on the vocabulary test. Plus, Mom’s away at a conference, which means so is the Assistant Principal. I am a little worried, though, because, as Coach likes to say, you can get used to things going well, but you’re never prepared for something going wrong.

I’m on Free Throw Number Twenty-Seven We take turns, switching every time we miss. JB has hit forty-one, the last twelve in a row. Filthy, keep up, man, keep up, he says. Dad laughs loud, and says, Filthy, your brother is putting on a free-throw clinic. You better— And suddenly he bowls over, a look of horror on his face, and starts coughing while clutching his chest, only no sound comes. I freeze. JB runs over to him. Dad, you okay? he asks. I still can’t move. There is a stream of sweat on Dad’s face. Maybe he’s overheating, I say. His mouth is curled up like a little tunnel. JB grabs the water hose, turns the faucet on full blast, and sprays Dad. Some of it goes in Dad’s mouth. Then I hear the sound of coughing, and Dad is no longer leaning against the car, now he’s moving toward the hose, and laughing. So is JB. Then Dad grabs the hose and sprays both of us. Now I’m laughing too, but only on the outside.

He probably just got something stuck in his throat, JB says when I ask him if he thought Dad was sick and shouldn’t we tell Mom what happened. So, when the phone rings, it’s ironic that after saying hello, he throws the phone to me, because, even though his lips are moving, JB is speechless, like he’s got something stuck in his throat.

i·ron·ic [AY-RON-IK] adjective Having a curious or humorous unexpected sequence of events marked by coincidence. As in: The fact that Vondie hates astronomy and his mom works for NASA is ironic. As in: It’s not ironic that Grandpop died in a hospital and Dad doesn’t like doctors. As in: Isn’t it ironic that showoff JB, with all his swagger, is too shy to talk to Miss Sweet Tea, so he gives me the phone?

This Is Alexis—May I Please Speak to Jordan? Identical twins are no different from everyone else, except we look and sometimes sound exactly alike.

Phone Conversation (I Sub for JB) Was that your brother? Yep, that was Josh. I’m JB. I know who you are, silly—I called you. Uh, right. You have any siblings, Alexis? Two sisters. I’m the youngest. And the prettiest. You haven’t seen them. I don’t need to. That’s sweet. Sweet as pomegranate. Okay, that was random. That’s me. Jordan, can I ask you something? Yep. Did you get my text? Uh, yeah. So, what’s your answer? Uh, my answer. I don’t know. Stop being silly, Jordan. I’m not. Then tell me your answer. Are y’all rich? I don’t know. Didn’t your dad play in the NBA? No, he played in Italy. But still, he made a lot of money, right? It’s not like we’re opulent. Who says “opulent”? I do. You never use big words like that at school . . . I have a reputation to uphold. Is he cool? Who? Your dad. Very. So, when are you gonna introduce me? Introduce you? To your parents. I’m waiting for the right moment. Which is when? Uh— So, am I your girlfriend or not? Uh, can you hold on for a second? Sure, she says. Cover the mouthpiece, JB mouths to me. I do, then whisper to him: She wants to know are you her boyfriend. And when are you gonna introduce her to Mom and Dad. What should I tell her, JB? Tell her yeah, I guess, I mean, I don’t know. I gotta pee, JB says, running out of the room, leaving me still in his shoes. Okay, I’m back, Alexis. So, what’s the verdict, Jordan? Do you want to be my girlfriend? Are you asking me to be your girl? Uh, I think so. You think so? Well, I have to go now. Yes. Yes, what? I like you. A lot. I like you, too . . . Precious. So, now I’m Precious? Everyone calls you JB. Then I guess it’s official. Text me later. Good night, Miss Sweet— What did you call me? Uh, good night, my sweetness. Good night, Precious. JB comes running out of the bathroom. What’d she say, Josh? Come on, tell me. She said she likes me a lot, I tell him. You mean she likes me a lot? he asks. Yeah . . . that’s what I meant.

JB and I eat lunch together every day, taking bites of Mom’s tuna salad on wheat between arguments: Who’s the better dunker, Blake or LeBron? Which is superior, Nike or Converse? Only today I wait at our table in the back for twenty-five minutes, texting Vondie (home sick), eating a fruit cup (alone), before I see JB strut into the cafeteria with Miss Sweet Tea holding his precious hand.

Boy walks into a room with a girl. They come over. He says, Hey, Filthy McNasty like he’s said forever, but it sounds different this time, and when he snickers, she does too, like it’s some inside joke, and my nickname, some dirty punch line.

At practice Coach says we need to work on our mental game. If we think we can beat Independence Junior High— the defending champions, the number one seed, the only other undefeated team— then we will. But instead of drills and sprints, we sit on our butts, make weird sounds— Ohmmmmmmmm Ohmmmmmmmm— and meditate. Suddenly I get this vision of JB in a hospital. I quickly open my eyes, turn around, and see him looking dead at me like he’s just seen a ghost.

Second-Person After practice, you walk home alone. This feels strange to you, because as long as you can remember there has always been a second person. On today’s long, hot mile, you bounce your basketball, but your mind is on something else. Not whether you will make the playoffs. Not homework. Not even what’s for dinner. You wonder what JB and his pink Reebok–wearing girlfriend are doing. You do not want to go to the library. But you go. Because your report on The Giver is due tomorrow. And JB has your copy. But he’s with her. Not here with you. Which is unfair. Because he doesn’t argue with you about who’s the greatest, Michael Jordan or Bill Russell, like he used to. Because JB will not eat lunch with you tomorrow or the next day, or next week. Because you are walking home by yourself and your brother owns the world.

Third Wheel You walk into the library, glance over at the music section. You look through the magazines. You even sit at a desk and pretend to study. You ask the librarian where you can find The Giver. She says something odd: Did you find your friend? Then she points upstairs. On the second floor, you pass by the computers. Kids checking their Facebook. More kids in line waiting to check their Facebook. In the Biography section you see an old man reading The Tipping Point. You walk down the last aisle, Teen Fiction, and come to the reason you’re here. You remove the book from the shelf. And there, behind the last row of books, you find the “friend” the librarian was talking about. Only she’s not your friend and she’s kissing your brother.

tip·ping point [TIH-PING POYNT] noun The point when an object shifts from one position into a new, entirely different one. As in: My dad says the tipping point of our country’s economy was housing gamblers and greedy bankers. As in: If we get one C on our report cards, I’m afraid Mom will reach her tipping point and that will be the end of basketball. As in: Today at the library, I went upstairs, walked down an aisle, pulled The Giver off the shelf, and found my tipping point.

The main reason I can’t sleep is not because of the game tomorrow tonight, is not because the stubble on my head feels like bugs are break dancing on it, is not even because I’m worried about Dad. The main reason I can’t sleep tonight is because Jordan is on the phone with Miss Sweet Tea and between the giggling and the breathing he tells her how much she’s the apple of his eye and that he wants to peel her and get under her skin and give me a break. I’m still hungry and right about now I wish I had an apple of my own.

Surprised I have it all planned out. When we walk to the game I will talk to JB man to man about how he’s spending way more time with Alexis than with me and Dad. Except when I hear the horn, I look outside my window and it’s raining and JB is jumping into a car with Miss Sweet Tea and her dad, ruining my plan.

Conversation In the car I ask Dad if going to the doctor will kill him. He tells me he doesn’t trust doctors, that my grandfather did and look where it got him: six feet under at forty-five. But Mom says your dad was really sick, I tell him, and Dad just rolls his eyes, so I try something different. I tell him that just because your teammate gets fouled on a lay-up doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever drive to the lane again. He looks at me and laughs so loud, we almost don’t hear the flashing blues behind us.

Game Time: 6:00 p.m. At 5:28 p.m. a cop pulls us over because Dad has a broken taillight. At 5:30 the officer approaches our car and asks Dad for his driver’s license and registration. At 5:32 the team leaves the locker room and pregame warm-ups begin without me. At 5:34 Dad explains to the officer that his license is in his wallet, which is in his jacket at home. At 5:37 Dad says, Look, sir, my name is Chuck Bell, and I’m just trying to get my boy to his basketball game. At 5:47 while Coach leads the Wildcats in team prayer, I pray Dad won’t get arrested. At 5:48 the cop smiles after verifying Dad’s identity on Google, and says, You “Da Man”! At 5:50 Dad autographs a Krispy Kreme napkin for the officer and gets a warning for his broken taillight. At 6:01 we arrive at the game but on my sprint into the gym I slip and fall in the mud.

This is my second year playing for the Reggie Lewis Wildcats and I’ve started every game until tonight, when Coach tells me to go get cleaned up then find a seat on the bench. When I try to tell him it wasn’t my fault, he doesn’t want to hear about sirens and broken taillights. Josh, better an hour too soon than a minute too late, he says, turning his attention back to JB and the guys on the court, all of whom are pointing and laughing at me.

Basketball Rule #6 A great team has a good scorer with a teammate who’s on point and ready to assist.

Josh’s Play-by-Play At the beginning of the second half we’re up twenty-three to twelve. I enter the game for the first time. I’m just happy to be back on the floor. When my brother and I are on the court together this team is unstoppable, unfadeable. And, yes, undefeated. JB brings the ball up the court. Passes the ball to Vondie. He shoots it back to JB. I call for the ball. JB finds me in the corner. I know y’all think it’s time for the pick-and-roll, but I got something else in mind. I get the ball on the left side. JB is setting the pick. Here it comes— I roll to his right. The double-team is on me, leaving JB free. He’s got his hands in the air, looking for the dish from me. Dad likes to say, When Jordan Bell is open you can take his three to the bank, cash it in, ’cause it’s all money. Tonight, I’m going for broke. I see JB’s still wide open. McDonald’s drive-thru open. But I got my own plans. The double-team is still on me like feathers on a bird. Ever seen an eagle soar? So high, so fly. Me and my wings are— and that’s when I remember: MY. WINGS. ARE. GONE. Coach Hawkins is out of his seat. Dad is on his feet, screaming. JB’s screaming. The crowd’s screaming, FILTHY, PASS THE BALL! The shot clock is at 5. I dribble out of the double-team. 4 Everything comes to a head. 3I see Jordan. 2 You want it that bad? HERE YA GO! 1 . . .

Before Today, I walk into the gym covered in more dirt than a chimney. When JB screams FILTHY’S McNasty, the whole team laughs. Even Coach. Then I get benched for the entire first half. For being late. Today, I watch as we take a big lead, and JB makes four threes in a row. I hear the crowd cheer for JB, especially Dad and Mom. Then I see JB wink at Miss Sweet Tea after he hits a stupid free throw. Today, I finally get into the game at the start of the second half. JB sets a wicked pick for me just like Coach showed us in practice, And I get double-teamed on the roll just like we expect. Today, I watch JB get open and wave for me to pass. Instead I dribble, trying to get out of the trap, and watch as Coach and Dad scream for me to pass. Today, I plan on passing the ball to JB, but when I hear him say “FILTHY, give me the ball,” I dribble over to my brother and fire a pass so hard, it levels him, the blood from his nose still shooting long after the shotclock buzzer goes off.

    1. Its outlooks rubbish filtering system. They have "AI" rules that look at the sending ip address for reputation. They score you on user reportsand lots of other bits they will not tell you about. Make sure you have SPF, DMARC, DKIM, and sign up for their JMRP and SDNS they will tell you. But it still is a game of cat and mouse. Its a slippery slope and even Microsoft trap their own mail to their own outlook users. PITA, to be honest and luckily we managed to get a mitigation to the issue. However some users in different domains still complain of email going to JUNK. Go figure. I hate having to work on issues with Outlook.com. They themselves send out spam and have the audacity to block well configured SMTP senders. I wish you luck. You will need it.
    1. I started working with a strength trainer and then — because I wanted to learn how to be a better and healthier runner — studied to become a certified personal trainer and running coach.

When you try to improve something, finding someone with the knowledge to help you is satisfying, and you give your all to learn in the best possible way. From experience, I remember when I was 14 years old, I asked my parents to hire someone so that my chess game could improve quickly, and that resulted after six months, I played better and understood the game better.

    1. Another source— let's call him a good acquaintance of Putin's — puts it this way: The Russian president has it in his head that the rules of the game were broken and destroyed not by Russia. And if this is a fight without rules, then it’s a fight without rules — the new reality in which we live.

Another official points out that Putin claims that he had to start the war, as if the rules that were broken were not broken by him. Putin is paranoid, insulted, and apparently sincerely believed that he had initially put effort into building relationships with the West.

    1. You bring in illegals, OK, by definition, they're criminals. OK, they live in the underworld. They don't have a stake in the game as we do. About the first time somebody gets raped or killed, I hope they come straight after the Homer City Council and sue the City to the point of bankruptcy. If you make this a magnet for that type of people, then, you know, shame on you.

This feature is required for GDPR compliance. GDPR does in fact cover US companies when they grow so large that they have EU citizens as customers.

GDPR came into effect in 2018, but it was complete in 2016.

This means that the single example from GoodRX of a "new industry leading way of protecting privacy" is in fact mere-compliance with industry regulation and best practice.

This is another example of GoodRX holding themselves out to be leaders, when in fact they are clearly playing a game of catch-up regarding their privacy practices.

    1. Fold-It is a game that lets players attempt to fold proteins. At the time, researchers were having trouble getting computers to do this task for complex proteins, so they made a game for humans to try it. Researchers analyzed the best players results for their research and were able to publish scientific discoveries based on the contributions of players.

I think this example of crowdsourcing is really cool. I gives people an opportunity to explore and try at complex problems that cutting edge science is working with, and it gives the chance for new outlooks on the problem to be used because it is tough after working with something to see it in a different way. This benefits science and pushes discovery

I cannot say that I have ever watched a hockey game but I have heard the stories about the roughness of the game.

    2. Garbage and various fruit rained down on the NHL boss, one man raced up and smeared a tomato on Campbell,

2001, game 14 of the Cleveland Browns vs Jacksonville Jaquars...aka Bottlegate. Fans are passionate about their games.

    3. After the riot, the NHL began to crack down on all-out brawls (especially carrying your stick into one), though it would take another 25 years for the changes to take effect with the institution of the third-man-in rule.

25 years to change how they handled brawls in a hockey game. Seems so crazy if they were that dangerous.

    4. Montreal went nuts, both French and English, and with Detroit coming in for a St. Patrick's Day game at the Forum, revenge was on some fans' minds. However, nothing may have happened if Campbell hadn't made a tactical error — he showed up to the game (10 minutes late) with his secretary (future wife) and took his regular place.Les Habitants trailed 4-1 at this point as the home side had their minds on something else, and that didn't help matters either. Garbage and various fruit rained down on the NHL boss, one man raced up and smeared a tomato on Campbell, and less than a minute later a homemade tear gas bomb went off.

The fury the fans must have felt. This suspension was personal to them!

They realize what a huge person he is to the fans. Bigger than life a symbol of how they feel.

    3. You’ve never seen a hockey player like Maurice Richard. Not Crosby. Not Gretzky. Not Orr, Beliveau, Howe. None of them had the talent, the intensity, the will to take over a game like Richard. And none of them meant to their fans what le Rocket meant to Canadien fans.

Showing how great he was compared to others and what he meant to the loyal Canadian fans which fueled the fans

    4. The Detroit defenseman threw himself at Richard during a game in the 1945-46 season as Richard brought the puck into the Red Wings’ zone. Richard lowered his head and neck to buttress himself for the collision then straightened, with Seibert, draped atop his back. Richard carried the 200-pound defenseman to the net, deked the goaltender with one hand on his stick and flipped the puck into the far corner of the net.

I wish I could see that

    5. By 1955, Richard had scored more goals, 422, than anyone in the history of the NHL — 98 more than the next guy on the list. He had become the only player to score 50 goals in the 50-game season. He held the record for most goals in a playoff game, with five. Not only did he score often, he scored meaningful goals, when his team needed them the most, the game-winners in a record eight playoff games and more than 60 regular-season games.

    6. Once the officials finally subdue Richard and Laycoe, the referee, Frank Udvari, sends Laycoe to the penalty box with a five-minute major for drawing blood. When Laycoe throws a bloody towel at him, he adds 10 minutes. The punishment is worse for Richard. Udvari kicks him out of the game. The Canadiens trainer guides him off the ice. Thompson skates behind them, to make sure he actually leaves and does not turn back to fight some more. Richard presses a towel to the gash on his scalp, which will take five stiches to close. He clutches a stick in his right hand.

      not evenly punished at all

    7. Laycoe lunges at Richard. His stick blade clips the Rocket above the left ear and opens a gash. The blood stains his scalp.

in the heat of the game it gets intense but this is a little much

    8. Before each game, I think about my temper and how I should control it, but as soon as I get on the ice I forget all that.”

If this is true he was really out of control

    9. He had started playing this game as a 4-year-old on the backyard rink his father Onésime, a machinist at the Canadian Pacific Railway, built for him. It was quickly apparent he could play in ways other boys could not. By the time he reached his teens, his skills were in such high demand he played as often as he could, sometimes four games in a weekend, using aliases to play for multiple teams, often against grown men. The oldest of eight children, he quit school at 16 to work with his father in the factory. He began playing junior hockey the following year.

It almost sounds like the media is making him larger than life.

    10. Richard’s temper had already drawn Campbell’s censure. After Richard clubbed Ezinicki in 1947, Campbell fined the Habs’ star $250 and suspended him for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals, a loss. Four years later, he fined Richard a record $500 for attacking McLean in the hotel lobby. And just a little more than two months earlier, the president had fined Richard $250 for slapping the linesman Hayes with his glove.

This is definitely a form of oppression. harsher punishments with no remorse

    11. Richard knew his temper meant trouble but felt defenseless against it. “When I’m hit, I get mad and I don’t know what I do,” he confided in one writer. “Before each game, I think about my temper and how I should control it, but as soon as I get on the ice I forget all that.”

Richard anger controlled him. he probably needed therapy to work through his soul wounds.

    12. The next day, when Richard spotted McLean in the hotel lobby, he grabbed the referee by the throat, but his teammates managed to pull him away before he could harm McLean

His anger ran deeper than feelings of unfairness from the game.

    13. The late  Earl Seibert once learned about that intensity. Le Rocket accelerated quickly on his skates and the left-handed right wing had a backhand as sharp as his forehand, but at times, it seemed he could determine the fate of a game simply by his will. In the 1952 semifinals against the Bruins, Richard left the ice early in the third period to have a deep gash over his left eye bandaged. He returned late in the period, the game tied 1-1. With blood still spilling down his cheek, he took the puck at his own blue line and headed up ice. “You knew — everybody knew — that the game was over right then,” recalls Frank Selke Jr., the son of the former Canadiens’ GM.

Stars like Richard who come from a hard background like his, and are a minority, and have experienced social injustice tend to be more intense with their gifts. And more serious. its more than just playing a game.

    14. At times, he appeared superhuman. Like that night in December 1944 when he showed up at the Forum exhausted from moving furniture all day into his family’s new apartment — then scored five goals and added three assists, setting the NHL record for most points in a single game.

I think they loved him so much because he was the poster child for perseverance and toughness, and courage. And the French Canadians fought to prove this

    15. He married his teenage love, Lucille, in 1942, when he was 20 and she was 17, the same year he joined the Montreal Canadiens. He broke his ankle and was able to play in only 16 games. The critics thought he was fragile. The following season, 1943-44, he answered them with 32 goals and 22 assists.

Richard played this game like a true French Canadian. fighting for a place and for significance, no wonder he became their hero

    16. He began playing junior hockey the following year

Hockey was more than just a game to Richard.

    17. Incensed, Richard swings his stick with two-fisted fury at Laycoe. He hits him with such force across the shoulders that his stick splinters. Laycoe sheds his gloves and rushes at Richard, who drops his gloves. The two thrash at one another with their fists

The anger these men felt was deeper than losing a hockey game.

It is good that they wanted to take safety measures but what can they even so to stop this?

    20. The punishment is worse for Richard. Udvari kicks him out of the game. The Canadiens trainer guides him off the ice.

Ridiculous that he received a worse punishment.

    1. Whenever he stormed a goaltender,Richard's glare could be seen from the top row of the Forum--andin taverns for hundreds of miles around, where the predominantlyFrench-speaking Quebecois listening to the game on the radio hada clear picture of the man whom newspapermen covering theCanadiens had raised to mythical status.

He truly was loved like a God

    2. Mayor Jean Drapeau telephoned Campbell at the NHL officein town and begged him not to attend the game that night.

He almost rubbed it in their face that he was there after suspending Richard! The nerve!

    3. The gray weather on that St. Patrick's Day mirrored Montreal'smood. Mayor Jean Drapeau telephoned Campbell at the NHL officein town and begged him not to attend the game that night. Theimperious Campbell not only ignored the mayor's advice but alsomade a diva's entrance at the Forum,

This is a great way to compare the two if you are that passionate about the game!

    2. "The fans, they pray for two things. The first is that the Canadiens will win. The second thing is that they pray for the Canadiens to crush the Maple Leafs, but I think you don't need any God for that," he said with a laugh.

Again, showing the love the Canadians have for the game of Hockey!

    3. he arena is their temple, the players are their saviours, and those who worship them pray that the sacrifices made on the ice — of blood, sweat and tears — will lead them to glory.

Hockey in Canada was bigger than the church and people worshipped the game like Jesus!

    4. "Charity has been the function of the church. Now it's the team who is taking charge of the social life, visiting children in hospitals, inviting children to see a game or giving money to charity… Does that mean they have kind of a religious role?" he asked.

Not an expert, but this looks to me like the teams are giving back to the community more than the churches of certain religions..not just taking peoples money..

    5. "[Bauer] has really touched something deep in Quebec society, something that is so obvious nobody has taken the time to mention it," he said. "It really strikes something, and it's really fun too. Serious, but with some humour."

Hockey is such a great part of the history. More than a game with players, it's part of the culture, and the players, especially The Rocket, have influenced the culture and history.

    6. When we learned about the 100th anniversary, we thought it was a good time to talk about the relationship between sport and religion,

    1. You play with my world

War is often seen as a game of chess, especially to those in command. A few hundred casualties here and a few devastated cities there mean no more to the masters of war than the sacrificing of a pawn.

The writer is disgusted at the 'masters of war' as they treat people's lives with little care and concern. The word 'play' shows that the ‘masterminds’ are very manipulative, play– carelessly have fun find enjoyment in it, means little to them. The word 'my' shows belonging, OWNERSHIP, loyalty to what he stands for. the word 'My' has a tone of unyieldingness, showing that no matter what, he would not give up on his 'world', and would not let it easily perish. The word 'World' implies that it is very precious to him, that it his world, his all. It is invaluable and precious to him

    1. Instead, they argue, videogames, game-based learning, and technologized learning are the only valid ways of learning due to an increasingly interconnected and technologized global economy.

I get this argument, but bristle a little bit at the way we are encouraged to turn everything into a game. Games are inherently "fun" and learning is sometimes challenging, uncomfortable, and private.

    1. 'Cause we're young, and we're recklessWe'll take this way too far (ooh)It'll leave you breathless, mmOr with a nasty scar (leave a nasty scar)Got a long list of ex-loversThey'll tell you I'm insaneBut I've got a blank space, babyAnd I'll write your name

The conclusion of this song emphasizes the message that the speaker is young, reckless, and loves playing the game of love, even if it means being perceived as insane by her ex-lovers. She warns the person she's addressing that boys only want love if it's torture and that she's not afraid to take things too far. The repetition of the line "So it's gonna be forever or it's gonna go down in flames" reinforces the idea that the speaker is willing to take risks in the pursuit of love. The final line, "But I've got a blank space, baby, and I'll write your name," suggests that the speaker is not afraid to move on from past relationships and start anew. The overall tone is one of confidence and empowerment, with the speaker in control of her romantic life and unafraid of the consequences.

    2. Love's a game, wanna play?" Ay

The use of metaphor in the line "Love's a game, wanna play?" Ay. The speaker is comparing love to a game and is also suggesting that love is a competition or a challenge. Inviting the other person to participate. The use of the word "Ay" at the end of the line adds a sense of casualness and informality to the speaker's tone.

    3. Cause you know I love the playersAnd you love the game

In this line the speaker is using a metaphor to describe their and the other person’s approach to this relationship. The use of the word “player” suggests that there is a sense of detachment and lack of genuine emotions as a player is usually a term used for someone that is not serious about the relationship.
