"You could have left me something."
As a wife, she feels she has nothing. Just like Offred, they both have what the other wants and yet each feels like she has nothing -- in that way they are parallels of each other

I can hardly believe theAngels have a need for such scarves; anyway, the ones made by theCommander's Wife are too elaborate. She doesn't bother with the cross-and-star pattern used by many of the other Wives, it's not a challenge. Fir treesmarch across the ends of her scarves, or eagles, or stiff humanoid figures, boyand girl, boy and girl. They aren't scarves for grown men but for children
This says something about Serena Joy: She is longing for a story and herself is unconventional. Although all she can make is artificial. And it represents her beliefs in these scarves, which in some sense contradicts the hierarchical structure in Gilead.

which must once have been fine and was stillfinely kept, the fingernail at the end of the knuckly finger filed to a gentlecurving point
Could it be that her vanity, which she puts so much attention to, is mocking her because even with all this luxury, she fails to feel satisfied in her marriage with the Commander (in relation to the Handmaid's with their lack of vanity, but who have their fertility?

Now, as then, we are creators of new technologies and stars of theimagined future, driven—this time by great financial rewards andglobal competition—despite the clear dangers, hardly evaluating whatit may be like to try to live in a world that is the realistic outcome ofwhat we are creating and imagining.

If, for ex-ample, we were to reengineer ourselves into several separate and unequalspecies using the power of genetic engineering, then we would threatenthe notion of equality that is the very cornerstone of our democracy.
I find it hard to believe that equality is "the very cornerstone of our democracy".

Moravec’s view is that the robots will eventually suc-ceed us—that humans clearly face extinction.
Joy contends that one of Hans Moravec's views in his book Robot: Mere Machine to Transcendent Mind is that robots will push the human species into extinction in much the same way that early North American placental species eliminated the South American marsupials.

I used to treat my personal website like a content marketer, every post carefully crafted to attract leads that could improve my career or get freelance opportunities. However, it robbed me of a lot of joy. Now, I treat my personal website as my “digital home hub”. I’m much happier as a result.

keep only what resonates in a trusted place thatyou control, and to leave the rest aside
Though it may lead down the road to the collector's fallacy, one should note down, annotate, or highlight the things that resonate with them. Similar to Marie Kondo's concept in home organization, one ought to find ideas that "spark joy" or move them internally. These have a reasonable ability to be reused or turned into something with a bit of coaxing and work. Collect now to be able to filter later.

Miracles reawaken the awareness that the spirit, not the body, is the altar of truth.
How many times you thought a heavy bank account will make you happy? How many times you thought the same about careers, romantic lovers, fame or children and villa on a sheer? You might have also had some reveries that drinking alcohol will do or using drugs of any kind. Dig deep in this idea: what is it that you really want? If you look good enough you'll see the only reason why you're seeking all those things -- the joy is tied to them within your mind and it is joy indeed you really want. And yet, how many times your idols failed you? Weren't you shocked by the amount of side effects they bring? You thought a zillion coins will give you peace and happiness but what you've got is constant worry and distress. Is it not time for you stop chasing carrots but focus on your real goal instead?
If you would look on anyone more closely to figure out their motivation and what exactly makes them tick, you'll be surprised to see that you are not the only one who's chasing happiness, it is at root for anyone indeed. There is no difference between a mother of a baby and user of some drug except in ways they're looking for it: the mother plans to get it from her baby the other - from the drug. Even the biggest tyrants you can name were doing what they've done only because they honestly believed: this is the way to joy. And so the universal goal is equal but everyone has a unique and special plan on how to get it, a map their very own. But if you've dared to lift this heavy brick of paper, it means you are among of those who've started to suspect: your plan has failed.
what you seek for is a source of joy as you conceive it. T-24.5.1
It never is the idol that you want. But what you think it offers you T-30.3.4
You must have noticed an outstanding characteristic of every end that the ego has accepted as its own. When you have achieved it, it has not satisfied you. T-8.8.2
It is essential that you accept the fact, and accept it gladly, that there is no form of littleness that can ever content you. You are free to try as many as you wish, but all you will be doing is to delay your homecoming. T-15.3.2
I will not value what is valueless. W-133
The world I see holds nothing that I want. W-128
Seek not outside yourself. For it will fail, and you will weep each time an idol falls. T-29.7.1
Perceiving equality, the Holy Spirit perceives equal needs. This invites Atonement automatically, because Atonement is the one need in this world that is universal. T-6.2.5
Accept the plan you did not make W-186.5
Only God's plan for salvation will work. W-71

“The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic emotions; medieval institutions; and god-like technology.
Quoted by Amanda Joy Ravenhill on RE & CO Radio, Wednesday, October 13, 2021.
This leads to a sense of learned hopelessness: Things are worse than you imagined, and there is nothing you can do about it.
But Buckminster Fuller said, “We are called to be the architects of the future, not its victims.”

“I think that everybody knows that we are in this incredible inflection point for humanity. And I think that what we don’t appreciate enough is that artists are the angel investors in the future that we want. They just have a different form of capital.”

Luisa: My favorite genre was fantasy, of course, because at that point, it was an alternate reality where magic and anything was possible. Harry Potter. I grew up with Harry Potter. Grew up with Tolkien, grew up with Eragon, grew up with the series for the Lady Knight, grew up with the Chronicler. Grew up with all these fantasy books. I grew up with them. I still read them over and over and over again because every time you read a book, you find something that you missed and I love that. So yes, reading was my thing [Chuckles]. I love reading.

Say: Teach ye the Cause of God, O people of Bahá, for God hath prescribed unto every one the duty of proclaiming His Message, and regardeth it as the most meritorious of all deeds.
The discussion in book 6 after this quote explores what a duty is. It presents the idea that, like eating, laws in the Faith to pray or teach are not arbitrary rules, but statements about our nature, and conducive to our growth. This implies that they should also be sources of joy.

or you know very well that true Joy is a sedate and solid thing, a tranquility of mind, not a boisterous and empty flash:
That's pretty beautifully worded. A good life philosophy for anyone, I'd wager. True joy isn't found in the parties or the get-togethers, but in the little things, such as reading, walking and thinking.

Earth in forgetful snow, feeding A little life with dried tubers.
April is a time of rebirth, good for people with loved ones, but can be a lonely time for people who are alone. Winter seems like a better time of year because you can numb your emotions. And take joy in small doses (dried tubers).

3Now, if you are strong enough to bear it;If you can put aside all your private personal fancies, beliefs and opinions, which are but therubbish you have gathered from the dumping grounds of others; If you are strong enough to cast them all away; --Then My Word will be to you a source of endless Joy and Blessing.Be prepared to have this personality of yours doubt My Word as you read It all along the way;For its very life is threatened, and it knows it cannot live and thrive and longer dominate yourthinking, your feelings, your going and coming, as of old, -- if you take My Word into your heartand permit It there to abide.
I need to let go of my beliefs about myself and the world that I have taken on from what has been role modelled to me through my human life....
And to realise that the part of me that has believed other than what is Truth may be resistant to the message in this text.
The invitation extends to taking the Word within my heart and to abide, be with it and it will become a source of joy and blessing...

o offset this state of emotional neutrality in classrooms, teachers must thoughtfully re consider how reading instruction may be reor ganized to rekindle a sense of joy and ownershi
Yes! This sense of joy and ownership connected to literature is intended to create interest in literature that will last. Students would hopefully be proud of the book they read and as they grow up, be proud of books they own and can recommend to others. I know this is true for me.

It is not pleasant to sacrifice your illusions. And again, this is why it is imperative for you to connect with me frequently, if not absolutely constantly, so as to have the opportunity to stand in the presence of your Sanity, your unflawed experience of what is Really going on, because you will be able to catch the feel of Joy which will further illuminate You to you as Who You truly Are, and thus promote greater willingness to release, without reason or thought, the fantasy you.

Raj: It all depends on where you’re standing as you’re observing it. Because I will tell you, again, that from my vantage point this is cause for great Joy and great Joy is being experienced by those of us standing in attendance, you might say, as you reach out and desire to embrace, and thus express Mind, thus express your natural inherent Sanity.

Lethe (Leith)
The River Lethe was one of the rivers of Hades in Greek mythology. Exposure to its waters was held to lead to loss of memory, or, more intriguingly, a state of "unmindfulness" and oblivion. From this origin, it has re-appeared throughout western culture, from Dante to Tony Banks's first solo album (River Lethe in popular culture, Wikipedia).
By providing the alternative spelling of Leith, Alasdair Roberts 'doubles' this meaning with the Water of Leith, a river that runs through Edinburgh, and co-locates ancient Greek and contemporary Scots mythology.
The idea of eternal return is bound up with memory, with cultures being compelled to repeat and confront the missteps of the past. So the oblivion of forgetfulness provided by the endless Lethe provides a form of antidote or escape.
-
my sermons seven
In interview with Tyler Wilcox in 2009, Alasdair Roberts referred to the
specifically Jungian references to the "sermons seven" and mandalas... it's like a quest song against conflict and towards individuation. I know a lot of people with strong political or religious convictions whose musical and artistic practice is guided by that – in some ways I envy that kind of certitude, but I suppose my thing is always about flexibility, multiplicity, confusion wanting to reflect the turmoil of reality... always trying to remember that the oar in the ocean is a winnowing fan on dry land.'

ut what is better than wholesome sweetness or sweet wholesomeness? For the sweeter we try to make such things, the easier it is to make their wholesomeness serviceable. And so there are writers of the Church who have expounded the Holy Scriptures, not only with wisdom, but with eloquence as well; and there is not more time for the reading of these than is sufficient for those who are studious and at leisure to exhaust them.
rhetoric can be educational and enjoyable
